It`s Official: LG sends out invitation for the V20 smartphone launch event in SF,USA Sept 6.

LG Electronics on Thursday announced plans for the worldwide launch of its premium large-size smartphone LG V20 early next month. Its first launch event is set for San Francisco on Sept. 6, with another in Seoul on Sept. 7.

The South Korean electronics-maker sent out a poster invitation to local and global media titled “Play More,” featuring the image of a pop-up book and text reading “The second story begins, LG V20.”

The LG V20 -- categorized as a “phablet,” a combination of a phone and tablet -- is a follow-up model to the V10, a part of the “V Series” which stands as one of LG’s flagship premium smartphone lines alongside the “G Series.”

The V10, unveiled in October 2016, garnered much international attention as the world’s first smartphone to feature a double-camera on both the front and back, among other unique features.

Though LG Electronics did not reveal any details about the upcoming V20 in its recent announcement, the V20 is set to run on Google’s latest Android 7.0 Nougat operating system.

The V20 is also expected to embody features akin to the V10 -- such as a wide screen and high-quality audio system -- with systematic upgrades to enhance user convenience.

Japan: Meet ALTER the new robot. Video.

Researchers from Osaka University and the University of Tokyo are exhibiting the new robot, called Alter, at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (the Miraikan) in Tokyo until Aug. 6.

With today’s advanced technology, robots are so well designed they could be mistaken for people at first glance.

But scientists led by Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University and Takashi Ikegami of the University of Tokyo are working to raise robotics to a new level by developing one that, despite having a very mechanical appearance, moves as if it has a life of its own.

The researchers are exhibiting the new robot, called Alter, at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in Tokyo until Saturday.

At a demonstration last Friday at Miraikan, Alter sported a gender-neutral face and arms covered in silicone skin. The rest of its body was left uncovered, with most of its mechanical parts in plain view.

Other robots developed by Ishiguro and showcased at Miraikan include the androids Kodomoroid and Otonaroid, which resemble a real child and adult (kodomo and otona are the Japanese words for child and adult). Both were designed to speak like humans and modeled on actual human forms.

But unlike its predecessors, Alter was designed to minimize the appearance aspect and convey life merely by movement, Ishiguro said.

“Previous androids were made to look and feel as close to real human beings as possible by copying humans’ appearance and the way they speak,” said Ishiguro, who famously developed an android in his own image.

“But even though it has a very mechanical appearance and doesn’t say anything, Alter makes you think as if it were living,” he said.

At the demonstration, Alter smoothly moved its body and arms as if it had a will of its own. It is connected to several sensors to monitor its surroundings, including distance from observers and the room brightness, so it can alter its movement patterns as if recognizing the environment.

When a group of reporters entered a dark exhibition room where tranquil ambient music was playing, Alter started to swing its arms and body to and fro, as if it were pleased to see so many people.

Occasionally, it would lean its body toward them and move its mouth, as if trying to say something.
“With this robot, I want to show that an android does not have to be in the shape of human beings to make something look human,” Ishiguro said.

The researchers will gauge visitors’ reactions to make Alter’s movements more like a living organism. They will hold a panel discussion Saturday to discuss their findings from the exhibition.

Although Alter isn’t providing immediate benefits to humanity, Ishiguro said it will help researchers get closer to answering a philosophical question: How do people distinguish the inanimate from the animate?

“Even if an object is not composed of proteins like a human body, people may still be able to perceive it as a human being,” he said, adding that technology can be applied to make androids more affable.

The University of Tokyo professor, Ikegami, who has made art for more than 15 years to express artificial life, agrees.

“I believe life resides within the movement of an object, not within substances that constitute it,” he said.
Kohei Ogawa, an Osaka University assistant professor who programmed Alter’s control system, said: “Alter doesn’t look human, and doesn’t speak like a human. But it still makes you think like it has life — more than any other androids we have developed.”

Ogawa noted that it is extremely difficult to have a conversation with an android for 10 minutes.

“But for Alter, people can easily observe its movement for 10 minutes.”

IBM manages to build the first artificial neurons with phase change technology.

Artificial neurons scheme of phase change (IBM)

For decades, science has tried to recreate the structure of the human brain, but until now it was impossible to imitate its power and density available components. IBM has just taken an interesting step towards the positronic brain imagined by Asimov. It has created functional artificial neurons using phase change technology.

It is not the first time that IBM announced a breakthrough in this technology nonvolatile storage (data not disappear when you turn off the device) based on crystals that alter their molecular structure to receive electrical current of different intensity. Recently the company managed to create a similar cost of the current RAM memory phase change.

However, this new breakthrough IBM goes far beyond achieving our PC run more agility. What the investigators that the company maintains in Zurich has created are neurons that perfectly mimic the functioning of human neurons. Instead of a membrane enzyme, artificial neurons bind the axon and dendrites by a crystal antimony, germanium and tellurium, similar to that used in rewritable optical disks material.

These neurons glass changes its state closely resemble its biological counterpart. To begin with, the size can be reduced to a few nanometers, allowing enough grouping these neurons in a sufficiently small space.

In the first test, IBM has 500 functioning of these neurons in a row of five chips 10 × 10 compounds of these neurons, but the system is scalable. The researchers explain in the study that have published in Nature that could create viable marketing chips to 90 nanometer right now, and that in the future could be reduced up to 14 nanometers.

IFA 2016: LG to unveil the V20 Android N smartphone in September.

LG V20 leaked, two screens.
LG on Monday unveiled its plan to launch the new V series, V20, in September (IFA 2016 ?) with no specific timeline included.

"The V20 is designed to offer optimum multimedia experience for users," said an LG Electronics spokesman.

The company said in a statement that the new handset comes with the latest Android operating system (OS), Android 7.0 Nougat. LG said the decision reflects its strong partnership with Google, with both parties previously agreeing to exchange patents until 2023.

The LG mobile chief said in the statement: "The V20 is our first device to equip the up-to-date Android OS." He said the company hopes to set a new standard for the premium device market with the enhanced multimedia functionality of the V20.

Late last month, the company said in a regulatory filing that it will strengthen functionalities in video and audio for its new V series, as the V10 previously won favorable market responses for its dual-selfie camera and dual-screen.

An industry source said: "LG appears to have decided to introduce the new flagship handset earlier than expected, as the company should brace for fierce competition against other new premium smartphones from Apple and Samsung."

The V10 won explosive market responses in the United States where the company had sold more than 450,000 V10 handsets, only 45 days after its launch there.

The achievement enabled the company to record a 35.7 percent U.S. market share among smartphones with more than 5.7-inch display, according to market researcher International Technology Group (ITG).

IFA 2016: Samsung to unveil the Gear S3 Frontier smartwatch in September.

Besides the Galaxy Note 7 (August 2) Samsung is also preparing to showcase other big products, including the Gear S3, before the end of this year.

The South Korean tech giant filed the trademark for Gear S3 Frontier at the nation’s patent office on July 26, implying that there could be more than one smartwatch model the firm has up its sleeves.

The new project for Samsung smartwatch is reportedly named Solis, meaning the sun in Spanish.

The new Samsung smartwatch, anticipated to be unveiled in September at IFA 2016 in Berlin, will likely sport a round screen and is fully compatible with the firm’s payment solution Samsung Pay.

Samsung has recently updated the preceding smartwatch models’ software to be enabled with the mobile payment feature.
