LG and Samsung to compete with High Energy Efficiency Dryers.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are set to collide with their respective dryers with top-tier energy efficiency ratings. They announced a battle of pride that is to come by launching their dryers with top-tier energy efficiency ratings on the same day. While Samsung Electronics is boasting a “lineup of the most dryers with top-tier energy efficiency ratings”, LG Electronics is emphasizing “true domestic steam”.

LG Electronics is going to launch 16kg “Tromm Dryer STEAM ThinQ” with a top-tier energy efficiency rating and TrueSteam technology on June 26th. (Reference: 1st page of the Electronic Times issued on June 19th)

As LG Electronics prepares to launch its STEAM ThinQ dryer, it has also established a competition against Samsung Electronics regarding dryers with top-tier energy efficiency ratings. As of now, Samsung Electronics is the only one that has top-tier dryers on the market.

LG STEAM ThinQ that is produced from Changwon Plant is the only dryer with top-tier energy efficiency rating on the market made in South Korea. It received a top-tier energy efficiency rating due to its improved key components such as high-efficiency dual inverter compressor and dual inverter motor. Its annual energy cost is only $37 (44,000 KRW) based on its standard course. It provides various deodorization and sterilization features due to LG Electronics’ TrueSteam technology that boils water to 100°C. It is available in modern stainless, black stainless, and white colors and it is priced anywhere between $1,780 (2.14 million KRW) and $1,940 (2.34 million KRW).

“Our new Tromm Dryer with a differentiated steam feature and a top-tier energy efficiency will provide another level of value to our customers,” said Ryu Jae-cheol who is the head of LG Electronics H&A Business Division’s Living Appliance Business Department.

2020 H2: Samsung to launch 2 foldable smartphones. Galaxy Fold Lite in the works.

Samsung Electronics Co. is expected to launch two new foldable smartphones in the second half of the year, with an affordable foldable handset model likely to come out next year, industry sources said Sunday.

Samsung is projected to unveil the Galaxy Fold 2 and the 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip at an event in August, along with its flagship phablet Galaxy Note 20 series, according to the sources.

But its affordable foldable smartphone, presumably named the Galaxy Fold Lite, is not likely to make its debut at the event.

The South Korean tech giant has been rumored to introduce a version of its foldable smartphone that sells for nearly half the price of a regular Galaxy Fold.

Foreign tech reviewers have predicted that the Galaxy Fold 2 will feature a 7.7-inch screen when unfolded, while having a 6.23-inch cover display, both larger than its predecessor's 7.3-inch and 4.6-inch displays, respectively.

Samsung is expected to use ultra-thin glass (UTG) for the Galaxy Fold 2, as it did it for the Galaxy Z Flip. However, many predicted that the second generation of the Galaxy Fold is not likely to sport the S-Pen.

The 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip is not expected to have major changes in specifications from the first model, according to the sources.

Samsung's unveiling of the new foldable smartphones will come amid stiff competition from Huawei Technologies Co. and Microsoft Corp.

China's Huawei is reportedly planning to release its Mate X2, while Microsoft is looking to introduce the Surface Duo in the third quarter of the year.

Smart TVs reach 80% of World TV Sales. Samsung and LG expanding online video services.

Eight out of 10 TVs sold around the world are smart TVs, according to a survey by market researcher Omdia.

The proportion of smart TVs in total TV sales jumped from 68.3 percent in the first quarter of 2018 to 81.2 percent in the first quarter of 2020, the survey showed.

The ratio is higher at two Korean TV giants -- 93 percent at Samsung Electronics and 87.2 percent at LG Electronics. As a result, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are strengthening their own over the top (OTT) services to boost their smart TV sales.

Samsung Electronics provides “Samsung TV Plus” that allows users to enjoy a wide range content, including entertainment, drama, and movies, for free via the internet. Samsung TV Plus is the industry's first virtual channel service introduced by Samsung Electronics in 2015, and features video on demand (VOD) services that work like TV channels. Currently, Samsung TV Plus operates 518 channels in 11 countries around the world, and has continued to expand its service area and channels.

On top of that, Samsung Electronics once again expanded the features of smart TVs by releasing Samsung Health App in major countries such as Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Samsung Health not only recommends home training videos such as aerobic exercises, stretching, muscle exercises, and yoga according to the level of difficulty set by users, but also provides mental health care content to help them meditate and sleep tight. Samsung is also the first TV maker to load Apple Music, Apple TV and AirPlay2 (AirPlay2) onto its smart TVs.

LG Electronics is also strengthening its internet video service called “LG Channels,” which allows users to watch various channels for free on OLED TVs and nano-cell TVs connected to the Internet. It recently expanded its content further by adding 30 new channels of CJ ENM. The total number of channels available on LG Channels has increased to 112, including the 82 channels that had been provided through OTT service "Wavve."

In addition, LG Electronics is supporting OTT services by adding Apple TV as well as Netflix and Disney+ to LG Artificial Intelligence TV. Users can watch more than 100,000 videos provided by Apple TV. In addition, if you join Apple TV's own OTT service, you can enjoy a wide range of content produced by Apple. However, Apple TV's service plan for the Korean market has not been decided yet.

LG Electronics offers own Internet video service called LG Channels.

New Discovery: Deep-blue Phosphorescent OLED is Four Times More Efficient than Fluorescent OLED.

Korean Researchers Develop a Deep-blue Phosphorescent OLED.

Four Times More Efficient than Fluorescent OLED

The molecular structure and photoluminiscent spectrum of a newly developed iridium luminant

A team of Korean researchers has developed a deep blue-emitting phosphorescent OLED which is four times more efficient than OLEDs that use fluorescent materials.

The Korea Research Foundation announced on June 14 that a research team led by Jin Sung-ho, a professor at Busan National University, has developed a deep-blue phosphorescent material and device that has superior external quantum efficiency and field lighting characteristics compared to fluorescent materials.

OLEDs are receiving much attention as a next-generation light-emitting device as they have an excellent wide optical night angle, fast response speed, and highly luminous characteristics. OLEDs are divided into the fluorescent and phosphorescent types. The former has a 25 percent internal quantum efficiency, while the latter can achieve 100 percent internal quantum efficiency. Accordingly, fluorescent OLEDs are being replaced by phosphorescent ones. However, blue phosphorescent OLEDs still have their limitations — they are difficult to apply to actual displays because they do not satisfy color TV standards due to very low efficiency and luminance.

The research team solved low luminance and efficiency problems by adjusting doping concentration to optimize concentration imbalance between electrons and pores inside an OLED luminous layer. Although the external quantum efficiency (the ratio of actual light emitted outside the material) of current dark blue phosphorescent OLEDs is only 15 percent, the researchers achieved 24 percent efficiency by controlling the concentration of electrons and pores in the light emitting layer.

"While resolving the problem of low external quantum efficiency, we can satisfy NTSC's blue standards that establish luminous characteristics and color TVs’ color representation standards, so we can use them for future QLED rear lights and next-generation displays," said Prof. Jin.

The research results were published in the June 9 edition of the international journal "Advanced Materials."

Introducing the LG VELVET. Specifications. Video Ad.

The LG VELVET – an ergonomically designed phone that is every creator’s dream come true. From ASMR, Timelapse Control, and Voice Bokeh to countless other features, the VELVET is a sleek and refined all-in-one kit.

It boasts a 6.8” premium P-OLED Cinematic FullVision Display to maximize the 3 Cs: color, contrast, and clarity. The VELVET also raises the bar on audio quality with its stereo speakers and AI-Driven LG 3D Sound Engine that provide crisp, top notch sound.

ERA OF NEW ELEGANCE STARTS WITH LG VELVET

Visually and Tactilely Pleasing, New Design Language and
User-Centric Features Deliver a Fresh Mobile Experience

On the heels of its South Korea launch, the new LG VELVET smartphone will begin rolling out in key European markets this month. LG VELVET arrives in Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Poland first, followed by various countries in North America, Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America in the weeks ahead.

LG VELVET’s new design, characterized by flowing lines, curved corners and symmetrical front and rear edges are all implementations of the new 3D Arc Design language. Smooth, polished surfaces, shimmering colors and elegant touches such as the “Raindrop” camera that evokes imagery of falling rain set LG VELVET apart from its peers. This new, nature-inspired design language makes LG VELVET visually striking and comfortable to hold.

Key to the design is LG VELVET’s thin 7.9 millimeter profile, only made possible with its 6.8-inch P-OLED Cinematic FullVision display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, the first mobile platform from the company to integrate an application processor and 5G modem for superb performance in a smaller package that requires less power. Compatible with the enhanced LG Dual Screen (sold separately), both the VELVET and Dual Screen displays work with compatible active stylus pens.

“Powered by the Snapdragon 765G, the LG VELVET is equipped to deliver exceptional performance to meet even the most demanding 5G use cases, while also enabling intelligent multi-camera capture, high-speed gaming and all-day battery life,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager of the Mobile Business Unit, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “We’re excited to continue working with LG to help deliver 5G to more consumers with this truly global device.”

LG VELVET offers a fully immersive mobile viewing and gaming experience thanks to an easy-to-hold 6.8-inch P-OLED Cinematic FullVision display with a 20.5:9 aspect ratio. To limit accidental touches on the bright, slightly curved display, LG developed the Grip Suppression algorithm that identifies deliberate versus unintentional screen touches. To match the sumptuous visuals, VELVET delivers realistic and detailed audio through its stereo speakers enhanced by LG 3D Sound Engine. And with the headphone jack nearly extinct on today’s smartphones, it is reassuring for audiophiles to know that LG VELVET has their backs.

LG VELVET offers a suite of advanced imaging solutions called LG Creator’s Kit that takes maximum advantage of the phone’s 48MP main camera, other high-quality lenses and unique camera software. Timelapse Control lets users adjust exactly how fast they want their videos to look, while ASMR Recording employs the two high-sensitivity microphones to capture the faintest of sounds in all their magnificent detail. Voice Bokeh minimizes background noise in videos to keep the focus on the subject while 3D AR Sticker and 3D Photo Effect make taking portraits of friends and family a whole new experience.

To meet the diverse tastes of consumers, LG VELVET comes in a range of expressive, nature-inspired colors – Illusion Sunset, Aurora Green, Aurora White and Aurora Gray – with more colors such as Aurora Silver, New Black and others coming soon. Illusion Sunset is particularly unique in that it is the first phone from LG to utilize a customized optical pattern repeated in intervals of less than one micron, or one-hundredth the width of a human hair. This pattern is covered in a special film created with nano-stacked lamination technology to reflect and refract light for a shimmering effect.

“We think today’s smartphone customers want and deserve more than cookie-cutter designs and tried-and-true features,” said Johan Chung, executive vice president of overseas sales and marketing at the LG Mobile Communications Company. “In LG VELVET, we’ve created a differentiated smartphone with a design that can’t be confused for anything else and features with unique propositions that provide considerable value. We’re confident in the message LG VELVET communicates and believe that there are customers out there who agree it’s time for a change in the way smartphones are developed and marketed.”

Samsung patented a 6 camera array system with a tiltable image sensor design for smartphones.

Samsung just patented a design for new smartphone that will sport a 6 fold camera, consisting in 5 wide angle cameras and one zoom camera.

Samsung’s idea here relies on moveable/tilting camera sensors, and not just on the basis of the number of sensors that are included.

As envisioned, this new Samsung phone calls for five wide-angle cameras with a focal length of 28mm, along with at least one telephoto lens. Per LetsGoDigital, an LED flash supplements the camera array, and each sensor can also point in one direction “and then optimize the array configuration using image algorithms.”

By using moveable camera sensors you can do things like capture a panoramic image with a blurred or “bokeh” effect, which is something you can’t do with current Samsung phones. The Dutch site goes on to note that the benefits of this setup include better photos even in poor light situations, as well as superb focus, and higher dynamic range (HDR), according to the patent documentation.

The sensors are shown as being able to tilt independent of each other, depending on what the user wants. The camera setup can also produce time-synchronized image frames, which is extra nice when capturing video with a high frame rate.

What we see above points to a future for smartphones that’s less reliant on the number of megapixels associated with a camera and more on lens quality and sensor size, with a growing emphasis on being able to shoot much crisper and detailed images even in conditions when the lighting is sub-par. Manufacturers like Nikon and Canon have been using tilt and shift technology in their cameras for a while now, so it’s interesting to see it coming into our smartphones.

Dutch tech news blog LetsGoDigital spotted the patent filing.
