Red Flag for Skype in China ?

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

The popular Internet telephone service Skype could be dealt a major setback in one of the world's largest markets as the Chinese government cracks down on what it called illegal Internet telephone providers.

A Chinese government circular from the powerful Ministry of Information and Industry Technology called for a crackdown "on illegal VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) telephone services" and said it was collecting evidence for legal cases against them. It did not name any phone companies.

Skype was still available in China on Friday evening through its joint venture partner TOM Online.
Skype had not yet been contacted by Chinese government officials, a Skype spokesman said on Friday in the United States.

The timing of a ban in one of the world's fastest growing markets could dampen investor enthusiasm for Skype as it prepares a 2011 initial public offering. The Luxembourg-based company, which has about 124 million users worldwide, is expected to be valued at about $1 billion in the IPO.

The Chinese move appeared to be aimed at protecting three government-controlled phone carriers -- China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile -- that provide the bulk of China's telephone services.
The South China Morning Post quoted an unidentified ministry official on Thursday as saying VoIP services could only be provided by the big three Chinese operators.

China has been known to play hardball with foreign businesses. After a months-long stand-off over censorship, China finally gave Google approval in July to keep operating its Chinese search page.
Skype has 20 million users in Asia Pacific, or 16 percent of the company's total users as of the end of June, according to a U.S. regulatory filing. The filing did not break out China's user numbers and a Skype spokesman in the United States said he did not know how many Chinese users it had.

No single country other than the United States represented more than 7 percent of Skype's average monthly user, according to the filing.

The latest news is another setback after Skype's global service outage last week, which cast doubts on the reliability of the service.

In 2005, Skype was blocked in parts of China as the government sought to ban phone calls made over the Internet.

Skype, partly owned by Web retailer eBay Inc, has been growing in popularity among Chinese users and businesses to make cheap or free international phone calls over the Internet.

"Nearly 1 in 6 people in the world live in China, and a great many of them rely on Skype to connect with families and friends, run businesses, and call people around the world," wrote Skype's Josh Silverman in an October blog post about Chinese privacy.

The Chinese circular, dated December 10, did not say what amounted to illegal services and did not name any VoIP providers it considered to be breaking the law.

Representatives of the ministry and the ministry's office gathering information for the campaign did not answer telephone calls on Friday.

Representatives of China Telecom and China Unicom did not answer phone calls on Friday. A spokeswoman for China Mobile, reached in Beijing, referred calls to the firm's Hong Kong office. Attempts to reach the Hong Kong office were not successful.

VoIP calls allow users to make international calls for much less than commercial providers, or even for free if both parties are using VoIP. Many businesses that use VoIP services to cut down on their international telephone costs could lose access to the cheaper alternative.

CES 2011: Mitsubishi will showcase the Diamond 3D Projector At CES

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

This 3D projector is capable of full 1080p display. Since it's a projector, you'll be able to alter the display size to fit your own preferences. Mitsubishi gives 100" as the maximum size. The Diamond is powered an SXRD liquid crystal optical engine.

It brags image contrast of 120,000:1 and uses something called extra-low dispersion glass into the lens in order to avoid the weird color distortion projectors occasionally see. The Diamond has a 120 Hz refresh rate and an independent management function that gives you control over hue, intensity and individual color brightness.

This is a quiet projector too. It puts out only 19 dBa of noise and has two HDMI 1.4 outlets. The lamp comes with a 1-year warranty and the bulb is good for 4,000 hours.

The really nice thing about a projector is that it allows you to have a high-end entertainment set-up, something you can use to wow a room full of people. At the same time, turning your living room back to normal just requires the touch of a button. You get all the benefits of a giant HDTV without turning a big slab of LCD into the focus of your hearth.

CES 2011: Samsung AMOLED Mobile Display Unveils Next-generation Displays at CES

WorldWidetech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) will be demonstrating leading-edge, next generation AMOLED displays at Pepcom’s The Digital Experience! press event during the Consumer Electronics Show, at the Caesars Palace Hotel on Wednesday, January 5th from 7 to 10pm.

1. A 4.5-inch WVGA Flexible AMOLED offering world’s highest flexible display resolution
SMD is presenting a prototype of the most advanced flexible AMOLED display. Only 2mm thick, the 4.5 inch flexible AMOLED runs at a WVGA 800 x 480 resolution and can be rolled down to a one centimeter radius.

At WVGA, this new concept prototype offers a display resolution four times that of the previous most flexible AMOLED prototype in the industry, thanks to the use of a new plastic substrate that can withstand the 450-500 degree temperatures required in the manufacturing process.

Typically, flexible displays use plastic substrates instead of glass substrates because this helps the display become lighter and thinner. Furthermore, the new plastic substrates are not prone to breakage during manufacturing. Previously, plastic materials melted at temperatures over 400 degrees during the manufacturing process, making commercialization difficult.

Development of the 4.5 inch Flexible AMOLED prototype, designed for smart phone and tablet PC displays, is a major step on the road to mass production.

2. A 19-inch qFHD Transparent AMOLED for TVs and monitors: World's first large-screen transparent AMOLED production prototype
SMD is showing the world’s first large transparent AMOLED Display prototype, designed for use in applications from PC monitors to TVs.

Whether the prototype AMOLED display is turned off or on, it maintains up to a 30% transparency. The average amount of transparency elsewhere has been below 10 percent.

SMD’s transparent AMOLED prototype provides the highest resolution on a transparent large screen TV (over 19 inches) or monitor display.

Uses may include searching the Internet while watching TV, or watching TV on windows, including car windows for backseat passengers.

SMD will also be exhibiting a 14-inch qFHD transparent AMOLED for notebook PCs.

About Samsung Mobile Display
Samsung Mobile Display Co., Ltd (SMD) was established in January 2009 as a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI. Bringing together Samsung’s cutting-edge technological capabilities in LCD and AMOLED, SMD is committed to providing a comprehensive range of display solutions including AMOLED, LCD in one convenient channel. As a total solution provider, SMD is striving to light up the future with next-generation technologies such as flexible, foldable and transparent displays.

About AMOLED
AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays can go far beyond LCD and plasma with distinct advantages such as vivid color, widest viewing angles, low power consumption, high contrast and extremely fast response times.
1. Vivid colors: Outstanding color reproducibility that will not change in relation to the gray scale;
2. Widest Viewing Angle: Offering extremely clear viewing regardless of viewing angle;
3. Low Power Consumption: Excellent energy efficiency, with minimal power usage;
4. High Contrast: Bright, vivid and remarkably clear viewing with the highest display contrast and wide color reproducibility;
5. Fast Response: Incredibly fast response speeds. Because there is no change in temperature, moving images appear natural, virtually eliminating eye fatigue.

Apple is expected to release three versions of iPad 2. A CDMA version to Verizon ? and taking on Kindle with anti-smudge and anti-reflective treatments.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

“Apple is expected to release three versions of iPad 2, supporting either or a combination of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA, for 2011 with mass production to start as early as the later half of January. Apple will ship about 500,000-530,000 units to channels in January with shipment ratio of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA models at 3:4:3, according to industry sources, citing upstream component makers.”

The iPad 1 is currently offered in two configurations: WiFi only and WiFi+3G — and the 3G is exclusively with AT&T. If the rumor pans out it would mean that iPad 2 would be available on Verizon Wireless (and other CDMA networks) in addition to AT&T’s current offering.

The sources pointed out that about 60-65% of current iPad shipments are 3G models, indicating that consumers prefer models that are able to connect to the Internet all the time, therefore Apple is aiming to work even more closely with telecom carriers by offering more wireless solutions for iPad 2 to satisfy market demand.

In addition to wireless functions, Apple is also working on strengthening the iPad 2's anti-smudge and anti-reflective treatments in order to compete against Kindle and attract more consumers, the sources noted.

Since Apple's upstream supply chain is estimated to ship about 16 million iPads in 2010, the sources expects about 2-3 million iPad units of inventory will remain in the channel rolling over into 2011. Since Apple will gradually stop the production of iPad after January and launch iPad 2 by the end of the first quarter or the beginning of the second, the remaining iPad inventory should be able to satisfy demand during that period of time.

As for iPad 2, the sources estimate that the device's shipments in 2011 will reach 40 million units, accounting for 65-75% of the global tablet PC market.

Apple prepares three versions of iPad 2 for 2011, says sources.

Apple is forecasting 65 millions iPads sold for 2011-2010 (ipad2 and ipad)

Steve Jobs while introducing the iPad in San F...Image via Wikipedia
WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Shipments of 9.7-inch iPad panels from LG Display reached 1.5 million units in November 2010, and fellow supplier Samsung Electronics' shipments reached 1.2 million units for the month.

LG Display is estimated to land orders for 35 million iPad panels in 2011, and Samsung and Chimei Innolux (CMI), who is scheduled to join Apple's iPad supply chain in the first quarter of 2011, will each receive orders for 15 million units.

Based on these estimates, iPad panel shipments (including first and second generation models) will reach 65 million units in 2011, which is significantly higher than market estimates of 45-48 million units for the year. Market players noted that the 65 million unit shipment goal indicates that Apple is very optimistic about the tablet PC market in 2011, and it may also mean that Apple is overbooking panel capacity.

According to Digitimes Research, Taiwan suppliers supply all touch panel modules for iPads, and touch panel shipments for iPads are expected to reach 16.76 million units in 2010. Including other tablet PC products, touch panel shipments from Taiwan are estimated to reach 66.38 million units in 2013.

CES 2011: Mobile web activity measured for first time by GFK

WorldWideTech & Science.

Press Release:

Mobile web activity measured for first time

Research tool produces insights into daily usage of mobile internet

Mobile internet behavior has been quantified for the first time thanks to a ground-breaking research tool. Detailed insights on the mobile activity of over 200,000 mobile internet consumers in three European countries have already been produced, thanks to GfK Retail and Technology’s unique ‘Network Intelligence Solution’ (NIS). The pioneering research method analyses mobile behaviour via operators’ IP traffic.

“NIS allows us to provide both operators and the media industry with relevant and reliable information, enabling them to fully monetize mobile traffic for the first time” states Fredrik Hallberg, Managing Director of GfK NIS.

Mobile internet activity naturally takes off in the morning and by 10am high traffic is visible. The peak occurs just before 4.30pm as people leave to return home from the workplace. The usage differs considerably during the day and sometimes even within the same hour.  For example, 7.45am can have up to 30-40% more traffic than 7.15am on the same day.

A key driver for the usage of mobile internet is clearly the smartphone market and GfK research has seen a dramatic increase in sales during the past year. GfK NIS has revealed that the average smartphone user makes up to 24 web sites visits per day, and a vast majority of these are to traditional websites and not just mobile specific sites.

The NIS tool measures all websites visited using mobile internet regardless of the device; mobile phones, Smartphones, PC tablets and 3G Cards are all monitored.

The long tail of internet is obvious; the Top 50 websites only constitute about 40% of all visits.   In every country measured, the popularity of Facebook is consistently remarkable.  GfK has identified a cluster where Facebook is almost the exclusive site visited. “At GfK we call these ‘Facebookies’,” explained Fredrik. “They currently account for between 10-15% of all users and it will be very interesting to follow the development of this segment.”

GfK NIS will be rolled out globally during 2011.

CES 2011: Phoenix Gold® to Unveil World's First OEM Integration Car Audio Amplifier & Subwoofer Combo at 2011 CES

WorldWideTech & Science.

Phoenix Gold (www.phoenixgold.com) has long been seen as a trailblazer in the field of car audio, offering amplifiers, subwoofers and speakers that push the limits of engineering, technology and contemporary style.

At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this January, the company will take that legendary reputation one giant step further with the introduction of its Innovations Award winning i-Series "OEM integration" amplifier/subwoofer kit. Designed in conjunction with the Pacific Accessory Corporation (PAC), the Phoenix Gold i-Series amplifier represents a synergy of state of the art engineering and applied technology philosophy.

Installing an amplifier into today's technologically complex vehicles is not an easy task. One not only has to deal with a maze of wires, but also needs to splice into data and computer control systems, often with a patchwork of black box solutions. This leads to a high possibility of damaging vehicle components and the loss of factory-installed communication, safety and convenience features.

Over the last several years, the level of sophistication of OEM audio, communications and electronics systems has advanced exponentially. However, real innovations in the field of aftermarket car audio amplifiers and subwoofers are few and far between. The new Phoenix Gold i-Series amplifier shatters this trend by allowing for a seamless installation into today's most complex vehicles while also offering outstanding performance and power.

Installation of an i-Series amplifier is fairly straightforward: one simply removes the stock amplifier, plugs the i-Series amplifier into the OEM wiring harness, and connects the main power and ground wires. The amplifier automatically retains all the OEM functions such as steering wheel controls, radio functionality, Bluetooth, OnStar and navigation functions, just to name a few. Once installed, it can put out more than 800 watts of power, and features a dedicated subwoofer output and a 10-inch Phoenix Gold subwoofer for deep, hard hitting bass. And, if all that weren't enough, the i-Series amplifier also includes a pre-amp and remote turn on output that make introducing additional amplifiers simple.

Phoenix Gold will demonstrate the i-Series amplifier and subwoofer kit in a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro at the upcoming 2011 CES Show in Las Vegas (North Hall, Booth 809). For more information about Phoenix Gold, visit www.phoenixgold.com.
