LA Auto Show 2017: Honda Clarity wins Green Car Journal's Prestigious 2018 Green Car Of The Year Award .

Clarity is the First-Ever Production Model to Offer Consumers a Choice Between Electric, Plug-in Hybrid and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power

Honda's breakthrough Clarity sedan has been named Green Car Journal's 2018 Green Car of the Year® at the Los Angeles Auto Show's (LA Auto Show®) AutoMobility LA™. This future-thinking model bested a field of five extraordinary finalists that also included the Honda Accord, Hyundai Ioniq, Nissan LEAF and Toyota Camry.

Each of these finalists – arguably the strongest field of Green Car of the Year® contenders in the award's 13-year history – offer highly-efficient or alternative fuel options that address the need for lower carbon emissions, improved air quality impact and reduced petroleum use. All include electrification as part of their market strategy.

"Over our 25 years of exclusive focus on the 'green' car field, Green Car Journal editors have learned that what's assumed today may be quite different than what emerges in the market during the years ahead," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. "Today, electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen vehicles are all being explored as options. To its credit, Honda has now accomplished what no other automaker has – offering all three of these 'green' powertrains in a single model, with the capability of readily shifting production from one to another to meet future demand."

The Honda Clarity stands out among its competitors as it is the first to offer an electric model, a plug-in hybrid model or hydrogen fuel cell power model based on the same platform, creating a 'family' of vehicles to fit current and future needs. In addition to this technological feat, the Clarity offers a spacious and quiet interior and advanced driver assist technology such as Honda Sensing.

"It is a nod in the right direction to receive the 2018 Green Car of the Year® award for the Clarity family of vehicles," said Steven Center, vice president of connected and environmental business at American Honda. "The Clarity Fuel Cell, Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid offer the power of choice to consumers who want to step into the electrification game without being compromised. We are proud to deliver on that promise to offer these three advanced powertrains you can only find from Honda in a roomy five-passenger sedan with all the creature comforts that consumers expect today."

The Green Car of the Year® jury is composed of leaders in environmental and efficiency organizations, including Jean-Michel Cousteau, President of Ocean Futures Society; Matt Petersen, President and CEO of Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator and Board Member of Global Green USA; Dr. Alan Lloyd, President Emeritus of the International Council on Clean Transportation; Mindy Lubber, President of CERES; and Kateri Callahan, President of the Alliance to Save Energy. CES 2018: Continental introduces 5th gen of its short/long range radar sensors for vehicles w/automated driving.

Fifth Radar Generation Meets Future Requirements for Automated Driving.

- High precision in range resolution, object detection and accuracy in measuring the speed are key for future applications
- More than 30 million radar sensors from Continental will be in use worldwide by the end of 2017.

Technology company Continental has introduced the fifth generation of its short- and long-range radar sensors, which incorporate the company's extensive, long-standing expertise in vehicle surroundings sensors. This new generation will enter series production in 2019 and will feature greater capacity, catering to vehicle manufacturers' different requirements and electrical-electronic (E/E) architectures as it is also based on a scalable modular principle. Thanks to the worldwide trend of using 77 GHz technology, the sensor resolution increases and can detect smaller objects, such as an exhaust pipe that has fallen off, more accurately. With long-range radar, a range of up to 900 feet and an opening angle of ±60° are possible in the highest expansion stage depending on the required performance. With short-range radar, precise parking functions can be executed easily for the first time, in addition to functions such as blind spot detection, lane change assist or rear cross traffic alert.

"With the fifth generation of our powerful and tried-and-tested radar sensors, we are opening up new opportunities for modern advanced driver assistance systems," said Amit Kapoor, Head of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems at Continental North America. "Our latest radar generation is an important element in our technology portfolio to further strengthen and advance our leading position in the development of assisted and automated driving. In particular, the elevation measuring capability of our radar sensors allows the most varied of objects, even relatively small objects, to be detected more precisely."

Flexible usage and suitable for future E/E architectures

Continental's radar sensors are based on a highly sophisticated radar technology that benefits from four generations and almost 30 million units in series deployment to date. Measured against the scope of its performance, the development leap of the new generation lies in its compactness and flexible usage.

The image of the surroundings produced by the radar is sent to a central control unit such as the Assisted & Automated Driving Control Unit. In this way, different E/E architectures of vehicles can be covered using a single sensor concept. In addition to today's standards for bus systems, such as High-Speed CAN and CAN-FD, the fifth generation is already prepared for Automotive Ethernet, thanks to the hardware concept, which ensures that the necessary bandwidth for transmitting sensor raw data to the Assisted & Automated Driving Control Unit is available.

Enhanced performance thanks to higher resolution and more precise detection

One of the features of the new generation is a higher resolution compared to previous radar generations, enabling a more exact snapshot of the current traffic situation. In addition, road boundaries like curbstones as well as the height of objects, such as the end of a traffic jam under a bridge are detected thanks to the sensors' evaluation measurement accuracy. Even the entry-level variant of the long-range radar has a range of 600 feet and an opening angle of ±45°. The expansion stage currently in preparation will look 900 feet ahead, with an opening angle of ±60°.

When four of the short-range radar sensors are installed on the corners of a vehicle, the wider opening angle and higher resolution facilitate a seamless 360° radar "safety belt" all the way around the vehicle. Such a detailed and seamless display of the entire area surrounding the vehicle is important, since the vehicle would not be able to take on the driver's tasks in automated driving otherwise. In conjunction with other sensors, such as a camera, surround view systems and 3D Flash LiDAR, the goal of achieving an understanding of the vehicle surrounding that is equal to or even better than that of a human being is coming closer.

An established strength of Continental's radar sensors is also found in the fifth generation. Called auto-alignment, the sensors use a software function to automatically correct deviations from the sensor's ideal location at its installation location on the vehicle.

In order to meet the rising demand worldwide, Continental is constantly expanding its production capacities. Production of long-range radar sensors was launched in Shanghai, China, in October of this year with the goal of producing several million units a year in order to meet the local high demand. The sensors are also produced in Germany, the U.S. and the Philippines.

Continental at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018

The next radar generation is also a topic at the CES 2018 in Las Vegas. Visit Continental at CES, Tuesday, January 9 through Friday, January 12, at North Hall Booth #6106. The Continental press conference will be held at Mandalay Bay, Level 2, Ballroom A at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 8.

Samsung reduces to 12 minutes mobile full battery charge with new invent.

Samsung Develops Battery Material with 5x Faster Charging Speed.

Recently, a team of researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) developed a “graphene* ball,” a unique battery material that enables a 45% increase in capacity, and five times faster charging speeds than standard lithium-ion batteries. The breakthrough provides promise for the next generation secondary battery market, particularly related to mobile devices and electric vehicles. In its research, SAIT collaborated closely with Samsung SDI as well as a team from Seoul National University’s School of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Exploring Next Generation Battery Technology.

Lithium-ion batteries were first commercialized in 1991, and widely applied to markets for mobile devices and electric vehicles. However, with standard lithium batteries requiring charging times of at least an hour to fully charge, even with quick charging technology, and considered to have reached their limit for capacity expansion, there have been numerous attempts to explore use of new innovative materials. Among the materials looked at, graphene has widely become the primary source of interest as the representative next generation material.

In theory, a battery based on the “graphene ball” material requires only 12 minutes to fully charge. Additionally, the battery can maintain a highly stable 60 degree Celsius temperature, with stable battery temperatures particularly key for electric vehicles.

In its research, SAIT sought for an approach to apply graphene, a material with high strength and conductivity to batteries, and discovered a mechanism to mass synthesize graphene into a 3D form like popcorn using affordable silica (SiO2). This “graphene ball” was utilized for both the anode protective layer and cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. This ensured an increase of charging capacity, decrease of charging time as well as stable temperatures.

Dr. Son In-hyuk, who led the project on behalf of SAIT, said, “Our research enables mass synthesis of multifunctional composite material graphene at an affordable price. At the same time, we were able to considerably enhance the capabilities of lithium-ion batteries in an environment where the markets for mobile devices and electric vehicles is growing rapidly. Our commitment is to continuously explore and develop secondary battery technology in light of these trends.”

SAIT’s research results are covered in-depth in this month’s edition of the science journal Nature Communications in an article entitled, “Graphene balls for lithium rechargeable batteries with fast charging and high volumetric energy densities.” SAIT has also filed two applications for the “graphene ball” technology patent in the US and Korea.

*Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms from graphite, and is receiving much attention in the battery and display industry due to its physical, chemical stability. Graphene is 100 times more effective than copper in conducting electricity and displays remarkable electron mobility – 140 times faster than silicon – which makes it an ideal material for fast charge.

Dubai’s Emirates airline buying 40 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners for $15.1 billion. Video.

Emirates CEO Sheikh Ahmed pictured with Kevin McAllister, Boeing signing the deal.

Dubai’s Emirates airline signed a $15.1 billion commitment to purchase 40 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, Emirates Group chairman and CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum announced at the Dubai Airshow on Sunday.

The firm order for the 40 787-10s takes Emirates total wide-body orders with Boeing to 204 aircraft, which Sheikh Ahmed estimated are collectively worth more than $90 billion.

“It has always been Emirates strategy to invest in the most advanced and efficient aircraft, and today’s order reflects that,” Sheikh Ahmed said.

“Our announcement today also speaks to our confidence in the future of aviation in the UAE and the region.”

Deliveries of the aircraft included in the deal will begin in 2022, Sheikh Ahmed said.

“Some of these will be used to replace the older aircraft which we retire in the next few years, to keep our fleet always young and modern,” Sheikh Ahmed noted.

The signing of the agreement was attended by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as well as Sheikh Hamdan, Crown Prince of Dubai.

Kevin McAllister, the President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) said that the 787-10s “will open new destinations around the world for Emirates and will deliver Emirates the lowest cost-per-seat mile and the most efficient twin-aisle in the skies.”

When asked why Emirates chose the 787-10 over the rival Airbus A350, Sheikh Ahmed said Emirates planning staff examined both aircraft and concluded that the 787-10 “was the best option” for Emirates from 2022 onwards.

Sheikh Ahmed added that Emirates is currently evaluating engine options for the Dreamliner, which would be announced sometime in the near future.

Saj Ahmad, an analyst with the London-based StrategicAero Research, said the deal was “a great move which gives the airline flexibility to use a smaller airplane on less lengthy but dense routes.”

“It will be the perfect mid-range airplane, as well as allowing partner flydubai to shift passengers across routes where they need more capacity,” he said. “And with the cross-crew capability for pilot training between 777s and 787s, this will help cut costs and other associated inventory.”
