LG WebOS 3.5 Smart TV Platform earns certification for security excellence

Latest Smart TV Platform Earns Prestigious CC International Security Certification
for its Ability to Provide Superior Privacy Protection.

LG’s webOS 3.5 smart TV platform was recognized with a Common Criteria (CC) certification for its enhanced Application Security Solution Version 1.0 software. By snagging another internationally-recognized security certification, LG continues to demonstrate that its smart TVs are among the strongest when it comes to smart TV security. The recognition comes at a time when consumers are increasingly concerned about the potential of privacy breaches on their Internet-connected devices.

Security Manager, the webOS 3.5 security software module, was tested in accordance with Common Criteria’s rigid benchmarks. CC’s internationally-recognized ISO/IEC 15408 standards are used by governments, banks, and other organizations to assess the security capabilities of individual products including 27 member countries from around the world including Australia, France, Japan, Korea and the United States.* The test examined three phases of smart TV security : application installation protection, application execution protection and application content protection with digital rights management (DRM) encryption.

LG webOS 3.5 provides excellent application installation protection and blocks the installation of unauthorized apps by conducting a rigorous digital signature verification process. The LG App Store server oversees the digital signature generation process to ensure that webOS 3.5 installs applications downloaded only from the LG App Store. LG webOS 3.5 also delivers protection depending on the type of application – platform apps (also known as native apps) or web apps.

For native apps, webOS 3.5 implements sandboxing technology according to each application’s security attributes to block access to unauthorized system directories/files, device files and other data. LG webOS 3.5 allows web applications to use only approved application programming interfaces (API) to prevent these web apps from directly accessing sensitive information in the file system.

In addition, the latest webOS offers a powerful DRM license verification process designed to decrypt the encrypted content inside RAM (random-access memory) and to create a clean backup of encrypted content in flash memory.

“We have taken every possible step to ensure that webOS 3.5 offers excellent application protection and the highest level of privacy security,” said J.H. Hwang, senior vice president and head of R&D at LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

“Consistent with customers’ concerns over product security issues, we have enhanced the security of our smart TV platform. Certification by Common Criteria confirms that we’re on the right track when it comes to customer privacy and data protection.”

1Q 2017: WorldWide Tablets market share: Apple 24.6%, Samsung 16.5%, Huawei 7.4%

The worldwide tablet market once again contracted in the first quarter of 2017 (1Q17) with total shipments of 36.2 million, a year-over-year decline of 8.5%, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. The first quarter contraction marks the tenth straight quarter that tablets have experienced a decline over the same quarter a year earlier, with the previous five quarters recording double-digit drops.

The tablet market is comprised of two different product categories, which are headed in very different directions as noted by IDC in the past. Devices offering a first-party keyboard, which IDC refers to as detachable tablets, continue to grow for the most part. Many of these devices have quickly grown to resemble products that IDC refers to as traditional notebook PCs or laptops. The other product category is slate tablets (those lacking this keyboard option), which saw shipments peak in 2014 and is now in a steep decline that IDC believes will continue throughout the forecast period.

"As far as most are aware, the tablet market was created in 2010 with the launch of the original iPad, despite unsuccessful product attempts by other OEMs in the years leading up to this," said Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers. "The rate at which the tablet market grew from 2010 to 2013 was unlike many other consumer-oriented device markets we've seen before. However, it appears for many reasons consumers became less eager to refresh these devices, or in some instances purchase them at all. We continue to believe the leading driver for this was the increased dependency on smartphones, along with rather minimal technology and form factor progression."

At the same time that this roller coaster of tablet growth, peak, and decline was taking place, the personal computer market was experiencing one the worst declines the market's history. Fast forward to 1Q17 and traditional PCs have returned to growth, albeit relatively flat growth, for the first time since 1Q12.

"A long-term threat to the overall PC market lies in how the market ultimately settles on the detachable versus convertible debate," said Linn Huang, research director, Devices & Displays at IDC. "To date, detachable shipments have dwarfed those of convertibles, but growth of the former has slowed a bit. In IDC's 2017 U.S. Consumer PCD Survey, fielded over the previous two months, detachable owners held slightly more favorable attitudes towards their detachables than convertible owners did for their convertibles. However, owners of both were far more likely to recommend a convertible over a detachable."

IDC's outlook is that detachables will continue to far outpace convertibles in shipments, but the market pendulum seems to be swinging back in favor of convertibles if ever so slightly. Still, the detachable market has proven it will move with major product launches and Microsoft and Apple have yet to launch their 2017 salvos.

Tablet Company Highlights
Apple experienced its 13th consecutive quarter of year-over-year shipment decline despite being the market leader in 1Q17. Apple's results show that it is not immune to the changing dynamics of industry and consumer demand, part of which is due to the ongoing success of its other product lines.

2016 was Apple's first full year of iPad Pro shipments, which included the launch of the smaller screen lower-cost 9.7 inch version. This product line quickly elevated Apple to the top of the growing detachable tablet market segment, and IDC believes Apple is in a good spot to remain competitive at the top of this segment despite using a 'mobile OS' while many of its competitors are entering the space with Windows-based devices.

Samsung remained the number 2 tablet provider despite seeing shipments decline 1.1% year over year in 1Q17. Much like Apple, Samsung continues to migrate its tablet portfolio to the detachable segment and to support this the company launched three new products at this year's Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona in February. After supposedly leaving the PC business in 2014, Samsung now finds itself approaching the market again with a handful of Windows 10 detachable tablet models. The move isn't surprising as the entire industry seems keen on taking advantage of this market opportunity.

Huawei was the only company among the top 5 to experience positive growth in 1Q17 with shipments of 2.7 million, which was up 31.7% from the 2.0 million shipped in the first quarter a year ago. Like Samsung, Huawei has also slowly migrated its tablet portfolio from an Android slate tablet lineup to now include a mix of Windows-based detachable devices.

It is somewhat unclear how serious Huawei is about going down the Windows device route, but given this quarter's growth while others decline it seems the mix strategy and tablet play is working for the company.

Amazon.com continues to fluctuate in and out of the top rankings with its low-cost Kindle Fire devices. In 1Q17 the company shipped 2.2 million devices, all of which continue to be aimed at a very aggressive price point with a strategy to drive content and product sales via the device. Regardless of the changing industry dynamics mentioned in this release, Amazon seems poised to remain a competitor given its market strategy.

Lenovo rounded out the top 5 with 2.1 million tablets shipped in the quarter. Of all the companies in the top 5, Lenovo is likely best positioned in terms of channel strategy to grow its tablet business and IDC expects to see more of its successful notebook PC lineup migrate into the detachable tablet category.

Lenovo captured 5.7% market share in 1Q17, which was down just slightly from the 5.5% market share it had at this time last year.

Punctureless tires for bicycles ready for 2019 says Bridgestone Cycle from Japan.

Bridgestone Cycle announces punctureless bicycle tires.

Air-free design uses plastic spokes to absorb impact and enhance looks

Bridgestone Cycle's new bicycle tire uses plastic spokes to absorb impact rather than the air-filled tube of traditional tires.

Bridgestone Cycle could have cyclists walking on air with the announcement of its punctureless tires. Developed jointly with parent company Bridgestone, the new bicycle tire does not need air, thus never punctures.

The Japanese bicycle maker said the nonpneumatic tire employs an "air-free concept" that Bridgestone has been developing for automobiles.

The company plans to start commercial production of the tires by 2019 after developing bicycles that can use them.

The air-free tire has a unique spoke structure that serves as a cushion, eliminating the need for inflated tubes used in traditional pneumatic tires. The wavy, flexible plastic spokes are designed to absorb impact and vibration from the ground.

Thanks to the use of plastic, which can be easily produced in different shapes and colors, the new tire also creates endless design possibilities, the company said. The company is also considering the use of different color spokes in front and rear tires.

Bridgestone Cycle plans to invite the public to try out the tires at events hosted by Bridegestone. One event took place in the southern prefecture of Fukuoka on April 30 and another will be in Yokohama on June 4. Feedback from users will help the company tweak development of the tire before its official release, the company said.

South Korea: SK Telecom launches 3 IoT devices .

South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. said Monday that it has launched three gadgets using Internet of Things (IoT) technology.

The IoT tech, which allows everyday appliances to link to the Internet, is seen as one of the major technological developments of the Internet and a new revenue source for telecoms firms.

"Keyco" is an IoT-based keychain with an embedded GPS chip for pets that can be controlled by a smartphone, allowing the owner to pinpoint the location of their pets, the company said.

The gadget is equipped with an alarm to tell users if their pets are more than a certain distance away or having an emergency, it said.

"Smart TocToc" is an IoT-powered alarm for a vehicle that instantly alerts the user's smartphone if there is an impact on the parked car.

"IoT Blackbox" is a combination of video, audio and GPS for a vehicle that sends a text message to an owner's smartphone to better monitor the car remotely.

SK Telecom said it plans to launch up to 50 IoT-based services and products by the end of this year.

Samsung to start full-fledged service of Bixby AI program.

Samsung Electronics Co. said it plans to start the full-fledged service of Bixby, an artificial intelligence (AI) program installed in its latest flagship Galaxy S8 smartphones.

While Samsung officially released the Galaxy S8 smartphone last month, the Bixby service was still in launch preparations.

Through deep-learning technology, Samsung said Bixby will learn users' speaking habits as well as other information to provide them with accurate voice assistance.

Market watchers said Bixby is likely to play a decisive role in further sales of the Galaxy S8, which has been facing various controversies including red-tinted displays and WiFi connectivity problems.

The display issue came to light when a few users claimed the flagship device's screen had an unusual reddish tint.

Samsung ruled out speculation that Galaxy S8 smartphones have faulty displays, claiming the controversial red tint on some devices can be corrected by users. However Samsung just rolled out a software fix lately.

Bixby is available for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus through updates. It is available in the Korean language, but Samsung plans to launch an English-language edition within the first half of this year.

The tech giant said the service will adopt more languages down the road including Chinese and Spanish.

Samsung added that Bixby is capable of executing 3,000 different tasks, and the program also understands millions of expressions spoken by users.

Kia launches Soul EV with extended range.

Kia Motors Corp. on Tuesday May 2, 2017, launched the latest version of the Soul electric vehicle (EV) with an extended range, a move aimed at adding more fuel-efficient models to its lineup.

The 2018 Soul EV can travel an average of 180 kilometers on a single charge using its 30-kilowatt-per-hour battery, higher than the previous version's 148 km range, the company said in a statement.

The all-electric Soul boxcar can run 152 km per charge on the highway and 202 km in downtown driving. It takes only 23-33 minutes for the car's battery to reach peak capacity through fast charging and five hours 40 minutes for it to be charged completely via conventional charging, South Korea's No. 2 carmaker said.

"The 2018 Soul EV went on sale Tuesday in the domestic market and exports are expected to begin within the next few months," a company spokesman said without elaborating.

The pure EV carries a price tag of 42.8 million won (US$37,800) but it is available at 16.8 million-28.8 million won with government subsidies worth at least 14 million won, he said.

Kia Motors, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automotive conglomerate, said it sold a total of 21,000 Soul EVs worldwide last year.

In the next few days, the Eco Taxi cooperative will begin its services in the city of Loja (south of Ecuador), with 30 units, the first to offer transportation services with fully electric vehicles in Ecuador. "It is a vehicle that does not produce pollution, zero emission ... it has very low or almost no vibration level ... and uses clean energy," said BYD Ecuador representative, Virgilio Benavides, company that supplies the cars, in declarations collected by Ecuadorian news media.

He added that each unit has an autonomy of "300 kilometers, that means that a taxi driver can travel all day without stopping working normally" and can reach a speed of 130 kilometers per hour.

Each of the 30 units that, according to local media, form "the second largest electric taxi fleet in South America, after Bogota", has a cost of around USD 35. 000.

The Eco Taxi cooperative is an idea driven by 30 Ecuadorians returned after living abroad. "We are grateful and consistent with each entity, so that the dream of a group of migrants in search of a source of work becomes a reality," said the manager of the cooperative, Ricardo Costa.
