The two companies signed an agreement
on May 13 with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Automotive
Technology Institute and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute for
cooperation in the automotive semiconductor field.
Through technical
cooperation, the two companies will develop next-generation power
semiconductors, image sensors, battery management chips, and application
processors (APs) for car infotainment systems. They are expected to push for
mid-to-long-term joint technology development in APs for self-driving cars, AI
accelerators, and telecommunication processors for future vehicles.
In line with this,
the Korean government is planning to build a system to enhance the Korean
industry’s self-reliance in the whole automotive semiconductor cycle.
Although Korea is
the world's number one memory semiconductor powerhouse, the nation accounts for
only 2 percent of the world automotive semiconductor market. Semiconductors for
vehicles are usually produced using 8-inch wafers, but Samsung Electronics is
focusing on high-performance products that are based on 12-inch wafers.
Automotive semiconductors are less profitable compared to mobile
semiconductors.
For this reason,
cooperation between Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor is unlikely to
produce some tangible positive results in a short period of time. However,
semiconductor industry watchers predict that the two companies will be able to
create a new market for system semiconductors together as the automobile market
is shifting to electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles.
Genesis’ electric vehicle JW (project name) was seen in South Korea last month
Genesis brand ( a Hyundai subsidiary) is attempting to become
the first in the global electric vehicle industry to incorporate wireless
charging capability into its electric cars that will be launched in 2021.
This capability helps the charger to
recognize the electric car and assists the car with parking and charging at the
same time.
Genesis is incorporating P&C technology into its first
electric vehicles “eG80” and “JW (project name)” that will be launched in 2021.
P&C technology is a technology that is able to verify the user and have
payments made automatically just by plugging in a charging cable from either a fast
or superfast charging station. It removes the complicated procedure of using a
credit card or a corresponding card in order to go through an authentication
process. It also supports “car pay”.
Also, the company plans to provide the industry’s first
wireless charging technology as an option. This technology was developed along
with WiTricity that is a leader when it comes to wireless charging of electric
vehicles.
Considering the current level of this
technology, the technology will be able to provide a speed of 6 to 8 kWh.
Because wireless charging requires a
separate construction at the charging station, it is only offered as an option for
upper trims. However, because standardization of wireless charging is currently
taking place in Europe and the United States, it is expected that the
technology will only be available locally starting from the second half of 2021.
Genesis is also working on home chargers specifically for its
electric vehicles. It plans to develop 7 kW and 11 kW chargers, and they are
expected to be applied to the company’s unconventional design.
“Wireless charging, P&C, and exclusive home chargers will
be at the core of Genesis’ strategy in targeting the global electric vehicle
market.” said one industry official. “Because the company’s goal is to target
the global market, it is focusing heavily on raising the level of competition of
its products and technologies.”
Regarding these new technologies, Genesis plans to introduce “eG80” and “JW” in the second
quarter of 2021 and launch them in order by the end of 2021. JW particularly is
based on Hyundai Motor Group’s first electric vehicle platform “E-GMP”. It is
expected to provide optimal driving performance and have a shockingly large
interior space that has never been seen before in gasoline cars.
Genesis’ image as a leader in
electrification will be vastly improved when the company’s electric vehicles
with P&C technology are launched in 2021.
Hyundai Motor Group stated that it
cannot disclose any detailed technology or feature of its new electric vehicles
that have yet to be released in advance.
Hyundai Motor Group is attempting
innovative technologies that even Tesla has yet to attempt through the Genesis
brand.
Although some automotive
manufacturers such as Porsche are conducting pilot tests on this technology in
the United States, they have yet to reach a level of commercialization.

IONIQ Concept Cabin Offers Many of Home’s Comforts for the Road
LG Electronics (LG) and Hyundai Motor unveiled the IONIQ Concept Cabin, a collaborative effort that combines both companies’ expertise in consumer lifestyle convenience and personal electric vehicles to deliver a concept that takes maximum advantage of the more spacious interiors made possible by EVs not encumbered by internal combustion powerplants and mechanical components.
The IONIQ Concept Cabin is equipped with a number of amenities that truly make this space a home away from home. For example, a capsule coffee machine makes and delivers the perfect cup for the morning commute, a compartment under the seat dries and refreshes wet or stale shoes before reaching one’s destination, a wardrobe manager keeps clothes neat and wrinkle-free during the drive and a mini-refrigerator keeps beverages chilled for those hot summer drives.
Beyond comfort and convenience, the most eye-catching feature of the IONIQ Concept Cabin is the flexible OLED display that covers much of the ceiling of the vehicle’s interior. Rear passengers can adjust the degree of curvature of the display with intuitive hand gestures for the optimal viewing angle. The large 77-inch OLED screen can be split to allow both rear passengers to enjoy different content simultaneously. The speakers in the headrests create a personal sound zone that doesn’t intrude on the other passenger.
But the innovation isn’t only visible when seated inside the vehicle. Once the vehicle is empty, a sliding bar wipes the floor clean, picking up crumbs and wiping up spills. At the same time, overhead UV LED lights to come to life to disinfect the interior of the vehicle of all germs and other microorganisms.
“LG has been very involved in connected car solutions and at CES 2020 we demonstrated a personalized in-car experience that allows drivers and passengers to take a piece of home on the road with them,” said Lee Chul-bae, head of LG Electronics’ Corporate Design Management Center. “With IONIQ Concept Cabin, we are taking that experience to the next level by partnering with Hyundai, who brings real mobility expertise to the table.”
Hyundai Motor Company announced the introduction of the Autonomous IONIQ concept during its press conference at Automobility LA (Los Angeles Auto Show). With a sleek design resembling the rest of the IONIQ lineup, the vehicle is one of the few self-driving cars in development to have a hidden LiDAR system in its front bumper instead of on the roof, enabling it to look like any other car on the road and not a high school science project.
The goal of the autonomous IONIQ concept was to keep the self-driving systems as simple as possible. This was accomplished by using the production car's Smart Cruise Control's forward-facing radar, Lane Keep Assist cameras and integrated them with LiDAR technology.
Hyundai Motor is also developing its own autonomous vehicle operating system, with the goal of using a lot less computing power. This will result in a low-cost platform, which can be installed in future Hyundai models the average consumer can afford.
The car's hidden LiDAR system also allows the Autonomous IONIQ to detect the absolute position of surrounding vehicles and objects. In addition, the Autonomous IONIQ features:
Forward Facing Radar which detects the relative location and speed of objects in the vehicle's forward path to aid in route planning
A three camera array which detects pedestrian proximity, lane markings and traffic signals
A GPS antenna to determine the precise location of each vehicle
High definition mapping data from Hyundai MnSoft which delivers location accuracy, road grade/curvature, lane width and indication data
A Blind Spot Detection radar to ensure even simple lane changes are executed safely
These features build upon the capabilities of the production IONIQ, which offers Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Assist. The vehicle also incorporates all autonomous controls into existing systems to ensure that drivers can have a seamless transition between active and self-driving modes.
Earlier this year, Hyundai Motor earned a license to test its autonomous cars in urban environments. To showcase the cars in action, Hyundai Motor will debut two Autonomous IONIQs at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January where the cars will be found driving up and down the neon-and sunlit boulevards of Las Vegas. In addition to offering media rides, these IONIQs will be prepared to tackle:
High levels of pedestrian traffic
Stop lights, stop signs and school zones
Road construction and roadblocks
Speed bumps
Dogs without a leash
Children at play
Shopping centers
Intersections without traffic signals
Hyundai Motor is currently testing three autonomous IONIQs and two Autonomous Tucson Fuel Cell vehicles at Hyundai Research and Development Center in Namyang, South Korea. Navigating Namyang for a self-driving car is a challenge because of the more than 11,000 engineers and designers on site every day.

Maps application programming interfaces (APIs) will be integrated into
the U.S.-based Hyundai Blue Link® telematics platform, helping drivers
more easily and quickly find their destination.
Hyundai Blue Link currently offers a variety of features and
applications that elevate the driving experience by providing
connectivity, convenience and safety solutions. New features supported
by the integration of Google Maps APIs include Send to Car, Point of
Interest Search and Local Search by Voice. These services will help
