Google Maps incorporates the maps of 12 planets and satellites of the Solar System.

Thanks to data compiled by NASA using the Cassini spacecraft, the cartographic application allows navigating the surface of the stars, zooming in and showing their main accidents

The cartographical application Google Maps has added to its platform the maps of 12 new stars of the Solar System, among them planets like Venus and satellites like Enceladus (a moon of Saturn), fruit of the collaboration with NASA and the European Space Agency.

In the 3D satellite mode section of Google Maps, with which you can navigate the geography of other planets, Google has increased the list with 12 new celestial bodies, among which are the planets Venus and Mercury, the dwarf planets Pluto and Ceres, and several of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn, such as Io, Dione, Titan and Ipeto. 

Like its application in satellite mode, Google Maps allows to navigate the surface of the stars of the Solar System, making "zoom" and showing the main accidents of the bodies, all of them rocky, like craters, ridges, plains and depressions, and the names they receive.

For the mapping of Enceladus, one of the satellites of Saturn, Google Maps has used the data collected by NASA using the Cassini spacecraft, which recently crashed on the planet. In his 20-year journey around the gaseous planet, Cassini found signs of water beneath the icy surface of this moon, as Google explained in a "post" on his blog. 

As for the maps of the rest of new celestial bodies added, including Europe, Ganímedes, Rea and Mimas, Google Maps has used reconstructions in three dimensions realized by the astronomical artist Björn Jónsson using images of NASA and the European Space Agency.

The new additions of Google Maps add to other celestial bodies whose maps were already available on the platform, which in 2014 added maps of the Moon and Mars for the first time to commemorate the second year of exploration of the Curiosity probe in the Red planet. 

Along with the planets, satellites and exoplanets present in Google Maps, the application also allows to cross the International Space Station and its main corridors, since its incorporation that took place last July.

Google to launch new Street View app in Mid August 2015.

Among Google’s imagery products, we strive to balance what makes sense for you, the pro or enthusiast photographer, with the needs of consumers. Achieving this balance can be a challenge, especially when publishing tools are managed under separate products. So we wanted to share our plans to help streamline our pro photographer tools with the established Street View brand. Here’s a summary of what’s to come in mid-August:

New Street View app.

For the first time, in one new app, your profile and photo spheres will be presented alongside those from Google and other contributors, creating a unified Street View gallery designed to bring more visibility to you and your work. On iOS, the Street View app will replace Photo Sphere Camera with both iOS and Android versions of the new app supporting our photo sphere camera mode. Most notably though, the apps are capable of linking to spherical cameras, including two at launch: the NCTech iris360 and the Giroptic 360cam. The iris360 delivers 8K, HDR images to the app, ready to be published in 120 seconds, while the 360cam focuses on accessibility with fast shots and a take–it–anywhere design.

Street View | Trusted.

In addition to the upcoming app, we're also preparing a set of changes to our sister platform, Google Maps Business View. In mid–August, this certified photographer program will be rebranded as “Street View | Trusted.” It will remain focused on supporting pro photographers who publish photo spheres to Google Maps, but at that time — and in direct response to your feedback — the program will shed many of its stringent requirements in favor of far more accommodating policies. In short, enrollment will be easier, publishing requirements will be simpler, and we’ll improve publishing and editing reliability. High quality imagery will remain a key requirement and distinction for those in the program.

Your Views profile will have a new look and feel, and be transferred over to Google Maps when Views goes offline in mid–August. At that time, we’ll enable photo sphere uploads directly from the Google Maps website. And later in the year, Google Maps will re-introduce the lost support for creating connections between photo spheres (“constellations”) with a new, more automated solution.

All of your existing, Maps-approved photos, photo spheres and constellations will continue to be visible — and deletable — through the Google Maps website. All images from your Views profile, including those that have not been approved for Google Maps, will continue to be hosted on Google+. And when publishing via Google+, geotagged images with the appropriate permissions will also continue to appear in Google Maps and Google Earth.

We hope that this unified product landscape will provide even more benefits for the photography community, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we prepare to take the next step in spherical photography.

Explore the Galapagos Islands with Google Maps and watch some 360 degree Street View. Video.



In partnership with the Directorate of the Galapagos National Park, The Charles Darwin Foundation, and Catlin Seaview Survey, we traveled to the archipelago to collect 360-degree Street View imagery.

Google Maps coming back tonight for iOS devices.


After Samsung made some fun about the iPhone maps (not saying directly) yesterday in Australia, Apple has decided to comeback with Google Maps.


Google plans to release its much-awaited iOS Maps app tonight, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The app should be a welcome addition for many iPhone users, who have been unhappy with an Apple-made replacement.

Just the fact that the Google Maps will be available for iOS doesn’t mean everyone will use it; the app will still be competing with Apple’s competitor, which is installed by default. But at least a few holdouts will be happy they can now finally upgrade to iOS 6.

Google Maps with helicopter view.

Earlier last  week, Google added a new button to the Google Maps Web interface that allows the user to view a 3D birdseye view of the route. (view picture below).

  To utilize the new feature, simply plug in a start point and a end point to the directions section of Google Maps. After calculating the route, look for a “3D” button next to the text “Driving directions”.

After pressing the new “3D” button, the map shifts into Google Earth view and begins navigating the route.

The concept is similar to the Soarin’ Over California attraction at Disneyland’s California Adventure, a theme park ride that lifts people into the air and simulates a flight over scenic portions of California.

The 3D simulation of the route can be paused at any time and users can rotate the map exploring the terrain of the surrounding area. After resuming the simulated flight, users can view each leg of the trip by watching the highlighted section within the directions on the left side of the screen.

Users can also jump to other sections of the trip by clicking on a specific section within the directions. Users can also pop back into 2D mode at any time during the animation. In addition to the 3D animation, users can also stop during the simulation to click on pictures and information links to learn more about the surrounding area or major landmarks.

The 3D helicopter view is currently being rolled out slowly across different regions and may not be available for all users yet.
