Galaxy Nexus is the next generation of Nexus devices co-developed by Samsung and Google. Nexus combines innovative hardware with the newest version of Android, 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, and the latest Google mobile services.

Wednesday morning in Hong Kong—together with Samsung—Google unveiled Galaxy Nexus, the first phone designed for the latest release of Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich.

Galaxy Nexus features a 4.65” Contour Display with true high definition (720p) resolution and a lightning-fast dual core 1.2ghz processor combined with 4G LTE or HSPA+ technology. Galaxy Nexus also features the latest in software.

Ice Cream Sandwich works on both phones and tablets, and to make the power of Android enticing and intuitive.

Galaxy Nexus sports a high-end camera with zero shutter lag, automatic focus, top notch low-light performance and a simple way to capture panoramic pictures. Shoot amazing photos or 1080p video, and then edit and share them directly from your phone.

Android Beam, which uses near field communication (NFC) to instantly share webpages, YouTube videos, maps, directions and apps by simply tapping two phones together. 

Face Unlock uses state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to unlock your phone with nothing more than a smile.

Google’s new Ice Cream Sandwich phone, Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

The  Samsung Galaxy Nexus  is the first Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone.

The specifications are expected to include dual core 1.5GHz processor, dual core Imagination GPU, 4.65-inch 1280 x 720 pixel Super AMOLED HD display, 5-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video, a powerful 1750mAh battery and could be LTE-enabled but also supports both GSM and CDMA carriers with a dual-SIM slot.

Google: Developers to get ready apps for Ice Cream Sandwich.

Today Google made a post on the Android Developers blog that informs devs of how to prepare their apps for Ice Cream Sandwich.

Scott Main, lead tech writer for developer.android.com, describes how the upcoming Android release will support big screens, small screens and everything in between. Since Android apps are forward-compatible, this means tablet apps developed for Honeycomb will also run on Ice Cream Sandwich.

Most Honeycomb apps were designed to run on a big screen, so devs must either “prevent installation on smaller screens or (preferably) support smaller screens with the same APK.

Ice Cream Sandwich will bring all the Honeycomb APIs to handsets. This means design elements like the action bar and fragments will be implemented on a smaller screen. Developers will need to “create ‘single-pane’ layouts for handsets and ‘multi-pane’ layouts for tablets.”

Hopefully this is a sign that the Ice Cream Sandwich software development kit (SDK) is nearing release. Last year Google released the Gingerbread SDK on the same day they announced the Nexus S. The device went on sale at Best Buy ten days later.

Could the Ice Cream Sandwich SDK be out in a matter of weeks? We should find out soon, but all signs point to “yes.”
