Logitech acquires Saitek manufacturer of flight, farm and space simulation game controllers.

Creating a More Immersive Gaming Experience – Logitech Acquires Saitek.

It’s an exciting day for Logitech G. We just acquired the Saitek brand and the Saitek line of flight, farm and space simulation game controllers. They’re the go-to products for anyone into games like Elite Dangerous, Eve Valkyrie, Star Citizen, Microsoft Flight Simulator and Farm Simulator.
There’s a whole list of reasons why this makes us excited…
First, these products are just great. We know a thing or two at Logitech about what makes a gaming product stand out and these products deliver exceptional experiences. Don’t take our word for it – we’ve seen the Saitek fans on the forums.
Second, simulation games are cool and getting cooler. Whether you’re into driving, flying or exploring space, there are fresh new titles available and more to come. Some of these titles are even VR enabled and we believe that dedicated controllers will stimulate and enhance the total VR experience.
Last and most importantly, we’re excited to be a bigger part of the simulation community. We already make gaming wheels for the driving simulation market and this new line of products will provide an even more complete experience. We care about this space and want to do right by its fans. We have a vision that will take these products further, faster. Stay tuned for future updates, as we further integrate the Saitek products into our overall Logitech G portfolio.

5G: Ericsson Announces Commercial 5G New Radio.

Ericsson AIR 6468

Ericsson is commercializing the 5G NR radio for massive MIMO, with the first deployments coming in 2017. Together with the Ericsson 5G Plug-Ins announced in June and Ericsson's already commercially available Radio System Baseband 5216, which currently powers Ericsson's Radio Test Bed, Ericsson is set to deliver all components of a 5G access network.

AIR 6468 combines advanced antennas with a large number of steerable ports to enable 5G technologies of beamforming, Massive MIMO and -- building on that -- Multi-user MIMO, initialized as MU-MIMO. These capabilities improve user experience while enhancing the capacity and coverage of the network and reducing interference. The new radio provides LTE support as well, so it is applicable in today's networks.

A host of new additions to the Ericsson Radio System are also coming that address key 5G requirements, in today's networks.

Additional new Ericsson Radio System gear addresses 5G concepts
  • Three new radios support Gigabit speeds for LTE and provide further flexibility in design: Radio 4407 and Radio 4412 enable 4x4 MIMO in one radio unit for FDD and TDD mode respectively, and Radio 8808 for advanced TDD beamforming applications
  • Addressing both the need for unlicensed spectrum options and the growing emphasis on small cells is the Radio 2205, a micro solution on unlicensed spectrum that is fully integrated in Ericsson Radio System, using the same baseband and network management
  • Two new baseband units support the growing need for densification: the outdoor micro Baseband 6502 and macro Baseband 6303 with Ericsson Rail System mounting for flexible site builds
  • Addressing interference issues in dense builds, Baseband P614 enables new band activation on challenging sites by mitigating Passive Inter Modulation, referred to as PIM mitigation, from static and dynamic sources both inside and outside the antenna system
  • Spectrum optimization is a growing need and Uplink Spectrum Analyzer is an Ericsson-unique software solution to remotely identify external interference without the need for costly measurement equipment and site visits
  • Exclusive to Ericsson is instant power sharing, used in the wideband Radio 2242. This capability allows power to be instantly shared between carriers, standards and bands, optimizing the use of radio resources
  • Cloud RAN will be an important 5G network architecture and Baseband C608 provides high-performance switching in Elastic RAN deployments

To support new network builds, Ericsson has created the Industrialized Network Rollout Services solution. The Network Deployment Delivery Platform coupled with Ericsson's process facilitates the complete configuration, installation, integration, shakedown and handover of a fully verified site, ready in a single site visit.

Samsung to use batteries made by China's ATL for Galaxy Note 7 replacement.

Samsung Electronics Co. will only use batteries made by China's ATL for its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones after faulty batteries led to a global recall of its latest products, industry sources said Sunday.

After the recall announcement earlier this month, the company is said to have contacted ATL to order an additional 4 million batteries as replacements in the Galaxy Note 7 devices. It had procured most of the batteries from its subsidiary.

The Chinese company is set to become the sole battery supplier for the world’s largest smartphone maker by shipments for the time being since the company stopped receiving batteries from its main provider and hasn't found a third supplier.

Previously, Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung's mobile division, said at a briefing that the company plans to increase battery suppliers to three from the current two.

ATL also supplies batteries for Apple's iPhone series, which means Samsung could face supply restrain if demand soars for the latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Reportedly, Samsung used to get 70 percent of its batteries from its subsidiary while 30 percent was from ATL for Galaxy Note 7 devices.

iPhone 7 Plus dual camera module supplier LG Innotek profitability to drive up.

According to the Korea Times, the lukewarm response to the new iPhone series will not aggravate LG Innotek's profitability in the second half, as the firm is expected to have higher margins backed by its dual-camera modules supplied to iPhone 7 Plus, analysts said Friday.

This comes as the company needs to turn around the underperformance in the first half of the year. The camera module manufacturer posted a whopping operating loss of some 34 billion won ($30.98 million) in the second quarter, turning to deficit from a year ago, hit hard by weak demand for components due to the global smartphone market slowdown.

But experts said the company may be able to offset this later this year, as the firm is the exclusive module supplier for the dual camera, which Apple CEO Tim Cook called the major draw for the new Apple smartphone. Dual-camera modules are known to generate more than one and a half the profit margins compared with a normal camera module.

"LG Innotek will stand to benefit from the new iPhone introduction, as the firm is the only vendor for the highly profitable dual-camera modules," Kevin Lee, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities, said.

"Global sales for the new iPhone series is estimated to reach some 62 million this year, up 21 percent from its predecessors ― iPhone 6S and 6S Plus," he said, forecasting that customers disappointed with the previous models are likely to change their handsets this year. Chinese mobile carriers' aggressive subsidy expansion drive will also help drive up sales for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, according to the analyst.

Despite the bright market prediction, shares of LG Innotek continued to fall after Apple unveiled the new iPhone series and the Apple Watch 2 on Thursday. LG Innotek closed at 79,300 won, down 2.46 percent from a day ago.

But Kim Ji-san, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, also maintained the rosy outlook for Innotek's potential rebound in the second half, hinting that the falling stock value would be temporary due to the unsurprising features of the iPhone 7.

"Chances are low for the success of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, as they come with no innovative change," he said. But the new handsets will help Apple lift its earnings in the second half, compared with the first half, as the company suffered from weak handset sales in the period, he said. In April, Apple said it sold some 51.2 million iPhones in the first quarter, down 16 percent from a year ago. Kim said Innotek will enjoy outstanding profit growth in the fourth quarter of the year.

Ian Fogg of IHS Technology said: "We expect the new iPhone 7 camera design will successfully convince consumers to upgrade their older iPhones, despite the lack of headphone sockets."

Samsung’s brand loyalty unaffected by Galaxy Note 7 recall: online surveys.

According  to the Korea Herald, the recent large-scale recall of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone over faulty batteries has not significantly impacted foreign consumers’ brand loyalty to Samsung Electronics, according to some online polls by internet news websites on Monday.

According to an online survey of 11,759 internet users by US technology news website Android Police, around 39 percent said that the recall “hasn’t affected my trust or perception of Samsung’s brand (whether positive or negative).”

Some 36 percent of the respondents said that “I’m actually more trusting because of Samsung’s speed and effectiveness in addressing the issue,” according to the ongoing poll.

Meanwhile, just 13 percent of the respondents said “I feel somewhat less trusting of Samsung’s smartphones because of the Note 7 recall” while 11 percent said “My trust in/perception of Samsung has been greatly diminished by the Note 7 recall.”

Last Thursday, the US Federal Aviation Administration as well as Europe’s air safety regulator warned passengers not to use or charge their Galaxy Note 7s on airplanes and not to stow them in checked baggage due to possible battery explosions.

The FAA’s announcement had prompted fears that consumers would further lose trust in the Samsung brand and its smartphones.

The following day, Samsung Electronics’ US unit released a statement saying that it has been collaborating with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to implement a voluntary corrective action plan to expedite a US recall of the Galaxy Note 7.

“Samsung continues to ensure that consumer safety remains our top priority. We are asking users to power down their Galaxy Note 7s and exchange them now.” Tim Baxter, President of Samsung Electronics America said.

“New Note 7 replacement devices will be issued to exchange program participants upon completion of the CPSC process. In the interim, consumers can return their Note 7 for another device,” he said.

In addition to the Andorid Police-led poll, another online poll conducted last week by internet news website GSMArena.com showed that foreign consumers remained largely unaffected by the recent Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall.

Some 63 percent of 7,465 people who participated in GSMArena’s poll said they would replace their Note 7 devices with new ones, while 37 percent said they would buy alternative brands’ devices such as the iPhone 7 Plus.

An independent poll conducted by SamMobile, a website created by fans of Samsung Electronics gadgets, found similar responses to the Galaxy Note 7 recall.

To the question “Did you lost trust in Samsung after the Note 7 debacle,” some 45 percent of 3,041 poll participants said “Not concerned. Recalls happen in all industries. I wouldn’t hold this against Samsung.”

Another 39 percent responded “Not really. I appreciate how Samsung has handled it” while another 16 percent said “Yes absolutely. Will not buy a Samsung product again.”

HP to acquire Samsung printer business for $1.05B

HP Inc. Accelerates Disruption of $55B Copier Segment with Acquisition of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.’s Printer Business

Aims to reinvent and replace service-intensive copiers with superior multifunction printing.

Palo Alto, Calif., and Suwon, South Korea, Sept. 12, 2016 — HP Inc. (NYSE: HPQ), the world leader in printing, today announced a definitive agreement to acquire Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.’s (005930.KS) printer business in a deal valued at $1.05 billion.

The acquisition positions HP to disrupt and reinvent the $55 billion copier industry, a segment that hasn’t innovated in decades. Copiers are outdated, complicated machines with dozens of replaceable parts requiring inefficient service and maintenance agreements. Customers are frequently frustrated with the number of visits needed to keep copier machines functioning. Today, HP is investing to disrupt this category by replacing copiers with superior multifunction printer (MFP) technology.

Samsung has built a formidable portfolio of A3 MFPs that deliver the performance of copiers with the power, simplicity, reliability and ease-of-use of printers and with as few as seven replaceable parts. Integrating the Samsung printer business’ products, including their mobile-first and cloud-first user experience, with HP’s next-generation PageWide technologies will create a breakthrough portfolio of printing solutions with the industry’s best device, document, and data security.

This is the largest print acquisition in HP’s history and accelerates its growth opportunities in the copier segment, strengthens its leading laser printing portfolio that has been established with Canon, and paves the way for future printing innovation. It also creates new avenues for growth and greater profitability for partners as they expand managed print services as sales models shift from transactional to contractual.

“When we became a separate company just 10 months ago, it enabled us to become nimble and focus on accelerating growth and reinventing industries,” said Dion Weisler, president and CEO of HP.

We are doing this with 3D printing and the disruption of the $12 trillion traditional manufacturing industry, and now we are going after the $55 billion copier space. The acquisition of Samsung’s printer business allows us to deliver print innovation and create entirely new business opportunities with far better efficiency, security, and economics for customers.”

Samsung’s printer business also brings a compelling intellectual property portfolio of more than 6,500 printing patents and a world-class workforce that includes nearly 1,300 researchers and engineers with advanced expertise in laser printer technology, imaging electronics, and printer supplies and accessories to support continued innovation in print market solutions.

“HP Inc. has been a valued partner and customer of Samsung,” said Dr. Oh-Hyun Kwon, vice chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. “We can now leverage our combined capacity for innovation to further enhance the value of our relationship."

Acquiring Samsung’s printer business will also strengthen HP’s ability to service customers in global laser printing, a category where it has enjoyed a strong, mutually beneficial partnership with Canon for more than three decades. HP is confident this transaction will provide new opportunities to further strengthen and accelerate this highly valued relationship.

“HP and Canon have long discussed print innovation to create customer value in business printing and in the growing MPS market,” said Fujio Mitarai, chairman and CEO of Canon Inc. “This transaction will further evolve our collaboration and bring about growth for both of our companies.”

The acquisition is expected to be accretive in the first full year following closing, with cost synergies and a strong financial model. The transaction is expected to close within 12 months pending regulatory review and other customary closing conditions. After closing, Samsung has agreed to make a $100 million to $300 million equity investment in HP through open market purchases.
