AT&T is buying Mexican operator network carrier Lusacell for 1.8 billion US dollars.
Lusacell have 8.6 million suscribers.AT&T sees potential for growth in Mexico.
Mexico is still in the early stages of mobile Internet capabilities and adoption, but customers demand for it is growing rapidly,said AT&T CEO Rolland Stephenson.
The acquisition could potentially lead to plans that include free or reduced rates for USA residents traveling in or calling to Mexico or the other way around.
AT&T shares rose $19cents to $34.91 on Friday and gained 9 cents to $35 in aftermarket trading.
