Louisville, Colorado, May 30, 2012 —The CableLabs® Board of Directors has selected Phil McKinney as the next President and CEO of the laboratory.

“We’re thrilled to have a technologist of Phil’s caliber joining CableLabs,” said Glenn A. Britt, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner Cable, and Chairman of the CableLabs Board of Directors. “For 24 years,

CableLabs has helped the cable industry be at the forefront of communications innovation, and that role has never been more critical than it is today. Phil’s expertise in innovation and consumer technologies will ensure that CableLabs stays ahead of the technology curve and fuels cable’s continued growth with innovation.”

Comcast President and CEO Neil Smit, and Vice-Chairman of the CableLabs Board of Directors, said, “As the pace of innovation continues to accelerate, we’re excited to have a leader like Phil who has broad experience that spans multiple industries and technologies and a vision that will continue to move our industry forward.”

An author, speaker, innovation mentor and columnist, McKinney has held technology and innovation leadership positions in a number of leading companies, including serving as the vice president and chief technology officer for Hewlett-Packard’s Personal Systems Group, where he was responsible for long-range strategic planning and research and development for all of the company’s PC product lines. He has also served as Senior Vice President and CIO at Teligent, and Director at CSC.

McKinney recently published his first book, “Beyond The Obvious,” a practical guide to consistently generating innovation. McKinney also writes a column for Forbes called “The Objective,” hosts a popular “Killer Innovations” podcast that CIO Insight has called “a must listen,” and tweets from his @philmckinney handle. Publisher's Summary

Generating and executing great ideas is the key to staying ahead in a rapidly changing world. It seems so basic. Why is it so hard to actually get right? According to innovation expert Phil McKinney, the real problem is that we're teaching people to ask the wrong questions about their businesses - or none at all. There has to be a better way.

In Beyond the Obvious, McKinney will help you use his proven FIRE (Focus, Ideation, Rank, Execution) Method to dig deeper and get back to asking the right questions - the ones all companies must ask to survive. Full of real-world examples, this book will change the way you operate, innovate, and create, and it all begins with battle-tested questions Phil has gathered on note cards throughout his career. Shared for the first time here, these "Killer Questions" include:

  • What are the rules and assumptions my industry operates under? What if the opposite were true?
  • What will be the buying criteria used by my customer in 5 years?
  • What are my unshakable beliefs about what my customers want?
  • Who uses my product in ways I never anticipated?
At once prescriptive and deeply challenging, these questions will reframe the way you see your products, your customers, and the way the two interact. Whether you're a company of thousands or a lean startup, Beyond the Obvious will give you the skills and easy-to-follow plan you need to make both the revolutionary changes and nuanced tweaks required for success.

The reviews are starting to come out, including the one below from Publishers Weekly.

"McKinney, vice president and chief technology officer for Hewlett-Packard's Personal Systems Group, provides a thoughtful yet practical guide to consistently generating innovation. Arguing that ideas are a company's most valuable currency, he maintains that an organization's success will be determined by its ability to generate ideas that lead to innovations that customers want. To help companies ignite these ideas, McKinney shares a system called the 'Killer Questions': a tool that prompts re-evaluation of old organizational beliefs that dictate how a company operates but which may no longer hold value. To do so requires negotiating the forces inside an organization that challenge innovation as well as dealing with outside curve balls. While re-examining core beliefs is hardly new advice, McKinney's system helps distinguish valuable ideas from others with less potential as well as paying attention to delivering value to customers, the value chain, manufacturing and supply, marketing and sales, shipping and distribution, and the customer experience. McKinney also provides an invaluable guide to extracting ideas from the book and applying them within an organization. He includes a helpful time line and six rules to keep companies on track. Offering concrete advice, McKinney gives organizations the tools they need to generate ideas and know that they're moving in the right direction."

McKinney said. “Apps from developers are continuing to grow for webOS. The interest is still there.”

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.
In a report made by allthingsd this last CES 2012, former HP CTO Phil McKinney  said. “Apps from developers are continuing to grow for webOS. The interest is still there.”

About ultrabooks he  said: “At the end of the day, they have Intel chips; they’re running Microsoft Windows operating systems,” McKinney said. He pointed to the HP Voodoo Envy 133, which hit the market in 2008, had a 13.3-inch display and weighed only 3.4 pounds (albeit at a $2,000-plus price point).

McKinney also offered his thoughts on webOS, which HP acquired with Palm back in 2010, and which recently became an open source project. “I was disappointed by the decision to kill the hardware. I still think, though, there’s a lot of life left in webOS,” he said.

He hears from developers and tinkerers, he said, who are still excited to work with webOS, but are waiting for the code, the access and the governance model from HP in order to really begin developing on the platform.

“Ultimately, I think webOS could become the alternative OS that you can download on devices that come with another operating system built in,”

HP´s Phil McKinney demos the HP webOS TouchPad controlling home appliances.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Besides he showed up the FREE Twynergy  HP webOS application, Phil McKinney used part of his talk with the crowd of Maker Faire 2011 hackers to show off Palm’s TouchPad WebOS tablet, due to ship this summer, controlling a fan and lamp and monitoring temperature, all wirelessly. McKinney said that HP needs the help of all the “makers” out there to develop cool apps.

It is the first time I heard about the HP webOS TouchPad controlling home appliances.

Phil also used his Maker Faire 2011 appearance to kick off a new effort to develop tools to aid those with autism. HP and its advertising agency, Goodby Silverstein, are kicking off a project called Hacking Autism, aiming at summoning more people to develop technology to aid those with autism. The effort will include an October “hack-a-thon” in Silicon Valley aimed at getting some ideas under way.

McKinney noted that 1 in 100 people are now born with autism in the U.S. In Silicon Valley, the rate is more like 1 in 80. “It’s a full blown epidemic,” he said.

I think the Hacking Autism project is a great humanitary initiative beyond the technology develop, that will really help people with autism.

NAB 2011: HP Phil McKinney: We are at a unique tipping point. Showed several futuristic concepts. HP webOS on them.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

In a great post by Ann Finnie worldwide PR manager for HP's consumer PCs and for PhilMcKinney, VP & CTO,  takes us on a Phil McKinney ride on how the devices of the near-future would look like and how content would have to take advantage of it.

Phil  in a session at the NAB 2011  April 12th, 2011 for Media devices on a connected world talked about  The Next Generation: what will be the must-have devices of the future and how will content change to take advantage of these new devices. In addition, he examined the trends and technologies that are influencing the media and entertainment industries five years out.

Ann Finnie says: “Phil believes that we’re at a unique tipping point. What’s causing it: The number of devices people have available to them and the fact that you’re no longer reliant on a single way to access information. As cutting the cable becomes easier, we’re finding more devices that take advantage of that information in smarter, less expensive ways. Ultimately, this also enables more people to create with fewer hurdles.”

Ann continues: "Phil took the stage to talk about the future of content and devices.  He showed an example of double wide 3D imagery to create an immersive experience and make people feel like they are part of an event even when they are on the opposite side of the world from where it’s actually happening.  He also showed several futuristic concepts including:

  • Fossil Metawatch: That you can see it turned to the right and read your calendar: Meeting at  Swiss Frost,....9:30 a.m
  • Flexible Display Technology, including some that are like sticky notes that can turn any surface into a display
  • Wearable technology that lets you carry your content and information with you
  • Augmented reality using glass goggles
  • See-through LCD displays that enable augmented reality experiences. (where webOS is on)
webOS on futuristic concepts.

We are entering in a new age of devices concepts that are just about to be real in a short time. The man, the team, the ideas, the concepts, the technology, and the company are of this planet. HP, you have the word. We are excited.
