Strategy Analytics: Android Slips But Continues To Dominate the Tablet Market in Q4 2013 with 62 Percent Share of Global Tablet Shipments.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 76.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2013. Android retained its leadership position with a 62 percent global market share, as Apple iOS increased to 34 percent. Windows declined to 4 percent of global Q4 2013 tablet shipments.
Peter King, Director of Tablets at Strategy Analytics, said "Global Branded Tablet shipments reached 58 million units in Q4 2013, up 24 percent from 46.7 million in Q4 2012." Adding in Whitebox Tablets, Global Total Tablet shipments reached 76.8 million units in Q4 2013, up 20 percent from 64.1 million units in Q4 2012.
Apple's new iPad Air and iPad Mini allowed iOS Tablets to grow share by 7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 (relative to Q3 2013), in doing so taking share away from Android and Windows OS Tablets. King added that "while the new models put a stop to two successive quarters of iOS market share loss (Q2 and Q3 2013), the companies once-per-year Tablet refresh strategy is likely to result in it dropping share as Android vendors refresh in Q2 and Q3." The new Windows RT Tablets from Nokia had a limited effect for Windows based Tablets in the fourth quarter.

  1. A white-box tablet is a product produced by one company (the manufacturer or ODM) that other companies (the vendors or OEMs) rebrand to make it appear as if they made it. White box tablets invariably use different components to a branded tablet in order to keep costs to a minimum.
  2. Shipments refer to sell-in. Numbers are rounded. The definition of a Tablet does not include e-book readers or convertible PCs.

According to the latest research from our Tablet & Touchscreen Strategies (TTS) service, global tablet shipments reached 25 million units in the third quarter of 2012. Apple iOS slipped to 57 percent global market share, allowing Android to capture a record 41 percent share.
Peter King, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global tablet shipments reached 24.7 million units in Q3 2012, rising a sluggish 43 percent from 17.2 million in Q3 2011. Demand for tablets slowed due to ongoing economic uncertainty and consumers holding off purchases in anticipation of multiple new models, like the iPad Mini, during the upcoming Q4 holiday season. Apple shipped a disappointing 14.0 million iPads worldwide and captured 57 percent share in the third quarter of 2012, dipping from 64 percent a year ago. Apple’s slowdown allowed the Android community to make gains and Android’s global share of the tablet market now stands at a record 41 percent.”
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Android captured a record 41 percent share of global tablet shipments in Q3 2012, jumping from 29 percent a year earlier. Global Android tablet shipments doubled annually to 10.2 million units. No single Android vendor comes close to Apple in volume terms at the moment, but the collective weight of dozens of hardware partners, such as Asus, Samsung and Nook, is helping Google’s Android platform to register a growing presence in tablets.”
Other findings from the research include:
  • Global tablet shipments grew just 43 percent annually in Q3 2012, compared with 289 percent annually in Q2 2011. This was the weakest growth rate since the modern tablet industry began in Q2 2010;
  • Microsoft captured a niche 2 percent global tablet share in Q3 2012. The imminent release of the new Windows 8 operating system will likely drive Microsoft tablet volumes higher during the Q4 2012 holiday season.

Strategy Analytics: Global Market share Chart Q1 2012: Samsung 30,6% Apple 24,1%,Nokia 8,2%.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 41 percent annually to reach 145 million units in the first quarter of 2012. Samsung and Apple together captured more than half of global smartphone shipments for the first time ever.

Alex Spektor, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global smartphone shipments grew 41 percent annually to reach 145.3 million units in Q1 2012. Samsung overtook Apple to become the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume with a record 31 percent market share. Samsung’s global smartphone shipments rose 253 percent annually to 44.5 million units, as demand surged for its popular Galaxy models such as the Note, S2 and Y.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Apple shipped 35.1 million smartphones worldwide and captured 24 percent marketshare, as volumes strengthened in key countries such as China, United States and Japan. Samsung and Apple combined now account for more than half of global smartphone shipments for the first time ever. Samsung and Apple are outcompeting most of their major rivals and the smartphone market is at risk of becoming a two-horse race.”

Tom Kang, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Nokia maintained its position as the world’s third largest smartphone player, but its global share fell from 23 percent in Q1 2011 to just 8 percent in Q1 2012. This is Nokia’s lowest marketshare level in the smartphone category since 2002. Nokia’s new Microsoft Lumia portfolio has recently gotten off to an encouraging start in the critical United States market, but shipments there are not yet large enough to offset the firm’s tumbling Symbian volumes in the rest of the world.”
