Will Foldable phones kill tablets to the end ? Samsung may launch a foldable variant of the Galaxy Note in 2019.

Image result for samsung galaxy note foldable

There are so many interests by smartphones makers at this time to keep not yet launching a foldable smartphone to tablet, maybe because these companies are still making tablets.

Another  reason are the technical hurdles not yet complete solved, mostly those linked to the durability of components.

However Samsung is working on a inward-folding phone that has 7 inch display screen when it is unfolded.

The screen could be extended up to 10 inch in the coming years and that is really a threat to actual tablets.

“Foldable smartphones will gobble up the market share of conventional smartphones and it is highly likely that the new type of phones will signal the end of tablets,” “That’s why Samsung Electronics and other smartphone makers who also make tablets are still gauging the launch timing of their own foldable phones.” said  Yi Choong-hoon, head of market research firm UBI Research, on April 26 at a display seminar in Seoul.

Samsung’s mobile business chief Koh Dong-jin said the firm aimed to launch its own foldable phone in 2018. But industry sources say the release schedule seems to have been postponed again to next year.

“The Galaxy S celebrates its 10th anniversary next year. Rather than stealing the marketing spotlight from the flagship phone, Samsung is likely to debut a foldable variant of the next-generation Note phone later in the year,” Yi added.

Tablets demand still in decline

Tech observers at the MWC 2016 said there was a relative lack of  coverage interest for tablets.

The worldwide demand for tablets has been decreased since almost 3 years now , where the 2 in 1 tablets/laptop and hybrids started to take that market niche. The Surface and Surface Pro from Microsoft took that niche that Apple just started to take as well with the iPad Pro with success in 2015 and will strike again with the iPad Pro 9.7 inch (instead the iPad Air 3) with Smart Keyboard, Smart connector and Apple Pencil this March 21st, when it will be announced alongside the iPhone SE.

"Although owners were once just as likely to second-screen via a tablet or a mobile, it’s the latter which has been winning the battle in recent years. By the end of 2015, 6 in 10 tablet users were second-screening on a mobile, whereas just 1 in 2 were doing so on their tablet.
That mobiles have won this fight is yet another indication that tablets have hit a ceiling. Proclaiming the ‘death of the tablet’ may be an over-statement, but it’s increasingly clear that these devices will not reach the heights that were once predicted. One thing that many attendees noted at last week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was the relative lack of coverage for tablets – something which gives further fuel to the argument that tablets are falling from favor."

In few words if I have a 6, 5.7, 5.5 or 5 inch phablet, Do I really need a tablet? I would prefer to buy a bluetooth keyboard like this to type on my phablet. Don`t you think? or If I really need a business device I would go for a 2 in1 or a laptop.

What is your choice?

Press Release:

LG expands tablet  options with new G Pad series model.

Three New Tablets Satisfy Consumer Demand for More Choices to Fit Their Lifestyles.

LGElectronics (LG) is adding three new tablets to its G Pad series to offer more options for tablet users. The new G Pad devices — G Pad 7.0, G Pad 8.0 and G Pad 10.1 — will be unveiled at the MedPI 2014, one of the biggest IT/Tech trade show in Europe, taking place in Monaco from May 13-16. LG’s extended tablet portfolio, which also includes the well-received G Pad 8.3, will significantly expand LG’s footprint in the tablet market.

“Customers tell us that they want a wider range of devices that offer sizable screens without compromising portability,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Unlike smartphones, tablets are not one size fits all. So we designed the G Pad Series for a diverse target audience, some who prioritize portability while others want the best multimedia experience possible. G Pad delivers on all counts.”

Highlights of LG’s new G Pad Series tablets are:

●     G Pad 7.0 : Designed to be held in one hand, LG’s smallest tablet is a non-the-go entertainment hub that delivers both portability and power.
●     G Pad 8.0 :  With its 8-inch display, LG’s mid-sized tablet offer san immersive multimedia experience and smooth multitasking.
●     G Pad 10.1 : With the largest display and battery, LG’s 10.1-inch tablet provides endless hours of entertainment and fun.

The latest G Pad tablets will also include LG’s proprietary UX features such as QPair 2.0 and Knock CodeTM. With an updated version of QPair, which was first introduced on G Pad 8.3, users can effortlessly connect to their Android-powered smartphones via Bluetooth to receive notifications of calls and messages and now be able to respond directly from the G Pad. What’s more, Knock Code™ enables users to power on and unlock their LG smartphones in one easy step by entering a personalized “knock” pattern on the smartphone’s display. Knock Code™ offers convenience and greater security as the knock pattern can be entered anywhere on the screen in any size — with the display on or off — using a personalized sequence of two to eight taps for more than 80,000 possible combinations.

Additional details of LG’s new G Pad tablets including specifications and availability will be announced locally in the weeks ahead.

2013: Global Tablet Shipments market share: Android 62%, Apple 34%, Windows 4%. Charts.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Strategy Analytics: Android Slips But Continues To Dominate the Tablet Market in Q4 2013 with 62 Percent Share of Global Tablet Shipments.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 76.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2013. Android retained its leadership position with a 62 percent global market share, as Apple iOS increased to 34 percent. Windows declined to 4 percent of global Q4 2013 tablet shipments.
Peter King, Director of Tablets at Strategy Analytics, said "Global Branded Tablet shipments reached 58 million units in Q4 2013, up 24 percent from 46.7 million in Q4 2012." Adding in Whitebox Tablets, Global Total Tablet shipments reached 76.8 million units in Q4 2013, up 20 percent from 64.1 million units in Q4 2012.
Apple's new iPad Air and iPad Mini allowed iOS Tablets to grow share by 7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 (relative to Q3 2013), in doing so taking share away from Android and Windows OS Tablets. King added that "while the new models put a stop to two successive quarters of iOS market share loss (Q2 and Q3 2013), the companies once-per-year Tablet refresh strategy is likely to result in it dropping share as Android vendors refresh in Q2 and Q3." The new Windows RT Tablets from Nokia had a limited effect for Windows based Tablets in the fourth quarter.

  1. A white-box tablet is a product produced by one company (the manufacturer or ODM) that other companies (the vendors or OEMs) rebrand to make it appear as if they made it. White box tablets invariably use different components to a branded tablet in order to keep costs to a minimum.
  2. Shipments refer to sell-in. Numbers are rounded. The definition of a Tablet does not include e-book readers or convertible PCs.
