Samsung Electronics and Visa today announced that the Samsung GALAXY S III, the latest in smartphone innovation, will be Samsung’s Olympic Games Phone during the London 2012 Games.

A limited edition showcase device enabled with Visa’s mobile payment application, Visa payWave, will be available for Samsung and Visa sponsored athletes and trialists, making it possible to buy merchandise with a wave of the device at thousands of retail locations throughout London.

Samsung’s Olympic Games phone for the London 2012 Games, comes equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) payment capability and is the next step in the partnership between the two global Olympic Games sponsors as they work together to drive the availability of commercial mobile payments around the world.

“Mobile payment services enabled by NFC technology are gaining momentum around the world. The Samsung GALAXY S III has been created with our human needs and capabilities in mind and is the ideal device to showcase the ease and convenience of Visa’s mobile payment application at the London 2012 Olympic Games,” said DJ Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing team of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

By the time of the Olympic Games there will be more than 140,000 contactless terminals around the UK. From the moment visitors land at Heathrow they will be immersed in a contactless payment experience with everything from taxis, to retail outlets, to the Olympic Park itself.

Sandra Alzetta, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Visa Europe says: “Mobile technology has long been a revolutionary force in our lives and NFC-enabled devices such as the Galaxy S III will fundamentally change the way we pay. The future is mobile and cash usage will only continue to decline as people use their mobile devices to manage their money, shop and pay. This summer our partnership with Samsung will showcase all the advantages of the future of payments: security, convenience, speed and flexibility being forefront among them.”

“The GALAXY S III with NFC technology is part of an evolution that will entirely change the way people shop, pay and get paid all over the world,” said Bill Gajda, Global Head of Mobile Products at Visa Inc.

“This summer we will be demonstrating the future of payments in London – a future where most consumers will rely on mobile devices, tablets and PCs to manage their daily financial lives. Our relationship with Samsung gets us closer to that vision, with a stunning new device that is sure to turn heads at the London 2012 Games.”

The showcase device is supported and enabled by London 2012 Games partner Lloyds TSB in the UK.

Mike Regnier, Personal Current Accounts & Credit Cards Director, Lloyds TSB, says: “Mobile payments are set to transform the payment process around the world, and will revolutionise the way people pay in the run up to, during, and beyond the London 2012 Games. We are delighted to be working with Visa to showcase the flexibility and convenience of this new technology at the world’s biggest sporting event, and excited to see the Samsung Galaxy S III in action.”

Visa payWave for mobile allows users to simply select the Visa icon on their mobile device and hold the phone to a contactless payment terminal to pay. Purchases above £20 require a passcode. The application also allows customers to check their transaction history and view their account balance.

How NFC is Transforming Mobile Phones into Payment Devices.

NFC technology has been adopted by payment networks, banks, merchants, mobile device manufacturers and mobile network operators as the global standard for mobile payments.

NFC is already becoming the norm: Berg Insight reports that annual global sales of NFC-equipped handsets has increased ten-fold to 30 million devices in 2011 and is forecasted to reach 700 million units by 2016. In addition, an estimated 20 countries are expected to launch NFC services in the next 18 months, resulting in transactions approaching $50 billion worldwide by 2014, according to Juniper Research.

Samsung, the Worldwide Olympic Partner for Wireless Communications Equipment, and Visa, the Worldwide Olympic Partner and exclusive payment services sponsor, will be demonstrating this new payment innovation with the GALAXY S III in the Olympic Village and throughout London for the duration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

About NFC and contactless technology
The mobile phone is as ubiquitous for consumers as their wallet, so it is logical that the mobile phone and payments industries should come together to realise this next stage in mobile evolution. During the last twelve months, there has been significant progress towards mobile payments becoming a reality, as manufacturers standardise technology, numerous mobile payment trials are successfully completed and contactless technology starts to gain mainstream acceptance.

Visa's offerings take advantage of a wide range of new technologies. Phones equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology make it possible for the devices to initiate Visa contactless transactions. The advent of phones that support next generation high speed networks can enable near real-time transaction alerts for added levels of security, fast and convenient purchases via the mobile internet, and deliver retailer offers tailored to life style and location. These developments have inspired Visa, mobile operators, handset manufacturers, and banks to work together to incorporate payment as a mobile application.

Visa acquires Fundamo signs deal with Monitise.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Payments giant Visa has made a major push into the emerging markets m-banking space by acquiring South Africa-based Fundamo for US$110 million. It also signed a new, long-term agreement with UK-based Monitise to ramp up its mobile payment services to Visa cardholders outside of the US.

“The combination of acquiring Fundamo and expanding the relationship with Monitise will enable Visa to deliver best-in-class mobile financial services and payments capabilities to consumers across the full spectrum of uses, geographies and mobile environments from basic services on simple handsets to more advanced services for smartphone owners,” said Visa in a statement.

The acquisition of the Fundamo payments platform will allow Visa to offer mobile financial services to subscribers across Africa, Asia and Latin America, targeting “billions” of unbanked and under-banked consumers.

Fundamo has some 50 deployments in over 40 countries, including 27 countries in Africa and the Middle East and another 10 globally. It currently serves more than 5 million registered subscribers.

Meanwhile, Visa said the agreement with Monitise would allow it to take advantage of the UK firm’s “expertise in customising mobile applications for a broad range of phone models and operating systems” to offer a range of new mobile payment services outside of the US, including mobile top-up, utility payments, and transit ticketing.

In addition, Monitise and Visa will launch a mobile banking solution in the US for clients of Visa DPS, Visa's debit and prepaid processing platform.

This new service is designed to enable Visa clients and processing partners in the US to offer their customers a suite of services, such as mobile payments, person-to-person payments, mobile transaction alerts and mobile marketing offers.

Visa to unveil m-commerce strategy .

WorldWide tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Payments giant Visa plans to unveil a “significant” mobile commerce strategy this month, possibly as early as next week. Dow Jones Newswires reports that chief executive Joseph Saunders made the remark on a second-quarter results call with analysts yesterday.

Visa’s decision to ramp up its efforts in the mobile space will be a major development for the nascent but high-profile m-commerce sector.

Tier one handset and software vendors such as Samsung, Nokia, Apple and Google’s Android are all focusing on NFC technology, while operators also want to ensure they don’t miss out on the action.

A US joint venture called Isis (involving AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon) hit the headlines this week following reports that its efforts to create a mobile payments network of its own (competing with the likes of Visa and MasterCard) are being scaled down to focus on development of a mobile wallet (in partnership with credit card companies).

2012 Olympics : Samsung and Visa to offer NFC handset.

WorldWideTech & SCience. Francisco De Jesús.

There was evidence of further momentum behind NFC this last week with the news that Samsung and Visa are to partner on a mobile payments scheme for the London 2012 Olympics.

The two firms – both sponsors of the games – say they will provide a “contactless enabled Olympics handset to Visa and Samsung sponsored athletes” as well as make the handset available to consumers via “mobile network operators and other distributors.”

A Visa-enabled SIM card will be required for use with the device in order to make purchases at contactless retailers. To make payments, customers select the Visa mobile contactless application, select pay and hold the phone in front of a contactless reader at the point of purchase.

Visa says it is already working with banks and retailers worldwide to roll-out acceptance for Visa contactless cards, as part of an industry wide initative. It notes that 60,000 merchants in London will be able to accept NFC payments in time for the games. The two firms say their stragteic alliance is designed to leave a “lasting legacy” in the market post-2012.
