LG Electronics Inc. has acquired the webOS operating system technology from HP.

LG was working with HP webOS Open in smart TVs for several months that was Oct 24th Gram working with LG on an Open webOS TV | webOS Nation plus 4 months until now. Something BIG is LG cooking.

Finally CES 2014 will be the show time for webOS Open. I don't think it will be for Smarts TV only. webOS with all patents is a HUGE buy and to recover that investement in a short time.LG has to come with several options  as soon as possible.

However here the full Press Release:

LG to License HP IP, Integrate webOS Technology into Next-Generation Devices

SEOUL, Korea, and PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 25, 2013 ㅡ LG Electronics Inc. has acquired the webOS operating system technology from HP, the companies announced today.

To support its next-generation Smart TV technology, LG has entered into a definitive agreement with HP to acquire the source code, associated documentation, engineering talent and related websites associated with webOS. As part of the transaction, LG also will receive licenses under HP’s intellectual property (IP) for use with its webOS products, including patents acquired from Palm covering fundamental operating system and user interface technologies now in broad use across the industry.

Today’s announcement paves the way for continued innovation on the webOS platform and on LG’s roadmap of innovative solutions for many years to come, while allowing HP to focus its resources on strategic business opportunities such as cloud computing.

“This groundbreaking development demonstrates LG’s commitment to investing in talent and research in Silicon Valley, one of the world’s innovation hotbeds. It creates a new path for LG to offer an intuitive user experience and Internet services across a range of consumer electronics devices,” said Skott Ahn, president and chief technology officer, LG Electronics Inc. “The open and transparent webOS technology offers a compelling user experience that, when combined with our own technology, will pave the way for future innovations using the latest Web technologies.”

Ahn explained that LG Electronics’ investment in webOS technology and its acquisition of the innovation team’s R&D capabilities are expected to extend LG’s leadership in bringing Internet services directly to consumer electronics devices. “Integrated with LG, this team will be the heart and soul of the new LG Silicon Valley Lab, focused on bringing innovative technology solutions to market through the most popular platforms for sharing and consuming content and experiences,” he said. With the transaction, LG will add the Sunnyvale and San Francisco sites to its global R&D locations, in addition to its existing U.S. sites in San Jose and Chicago.

Also under the agreement:
  • - LG will assume stewardship of the open source projects of Open WebOS and Enyo.
  • - HP will retain ownership of all of Palm’s cloud computing assets, including source code, talent, infrastructure and contracts.
  • - HP will continue to support Palm users.

“WebOS and its associated community deliver market leading platforms for the next generation of connected devices. We are constantly looking for opportunities to accelerate the delivery of this platform from the community,” said Bill Veghte, HP’s chief operating officer. “LG’s track record of innovation and broad distribution provides this opportunity, while enabling HP to accelerate our Cloud efforts. In particular, with the cloud assets that will remain with HP, we will focus on delivering innovative solutions that will enable our enterprise customers to mobilize their workforce.”

HP and LG do not expect this transaction to have a material impact on either company’s financial statements. Terms were not disclosed.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

WSJ CIO Network conference: Meg Whitman: smartphones are the next evolution of computers, we got to get in there.

HP the world’s largest personal computer maker now is considering ways to get back into the smartphone game, HP Chief Executive Meg Whitman said Tuesday at a conference in San Diego.

She told technology executives at The Wall Street Journal CIO Network conference that smartphones are the next evolution of computers.
“In many countries for many people, (smartphones) may be their only computing device, so over time we got to get in there,” she said. “But we have to figure out how not to lose a boatload of money while we do it.”
We know at this time HP will not unveil any smartphone this year, so the question is Will HP be ready with a webOS Open smartphone for CES 2014?

CES2013: LG and Gram are hoping to show off the Open webOS LG TV .

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

CES2013: LG and Gram are hoping to show off the Open webOS LG TV .

According to webOSNation Gram (HP Palm webOS Open Source company) is working with LG on an Open webOS TV. The project of porting Open webOS to the big screen has been underway for several months.

Headed by HP's Leonid Zolotarev, with Keith Weng leading program management and former Motorola project manager Thom Davis in charge of engineering, the Open webOS porting project has aimed to bring the user interface of webOS to the television, replacing LG's aging NetCast smart TV platform.

There's one hitch the Gram team working on the TV project is working hard to overcome, and that's boot speed.

HP signed an agreement with LG in June around this project. LG's also had multiple engineers sent to Sunnyvale to work with HP's webOS engineers. They've also sent multiple LG L9 motherboards (L9 being LG's dual core chipset made specifically for their smart televisions).
As for why LG is opting to pursue Open webOS for the smart television lineup, webOSnation have  been told that they aren't comfortable with Google's terms for using Google TV (let alone the adoption rate of Google TV) and fear what Apple could accomplish if they were more aggressive in the TV market. So while Open webOS may not be LG's property, it's something that they can do with as they please, and with the willing assistance of HP/Gram.
LG and Gram are hoping to show off the Open webOS LG TV at CES 2013.

Open webOS desktop demo.Looks good. Video.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

A new Open webOS demo on a desktop  made  by penkia shows the OS performance more efficient than before, when it was ported to a Goole Nexus, and to a  Samsung Slate 7

Penk instructions for anyone who wants to try it as follows:

UPDATED: added new download link

Download: openwebos-desktop-1005.iso (112MB)
MD5: 396dbd28dd08d337262821fec68be16c
I created an unofficial Open webOS Live distro, based on the desktop build and mkxpud for Ubuntu 12.04. It has bugs and only tested on Virtualbox, but you get the idea.

What's next

I'll work on following things
  • compile new kernel and add extra kernel drivers (targeting 3.2.0-23 for 12.04 LTS)
  • set boot parameter to /etc/palm/luna-platform.conf so you can configure gesture area, keyboard and resolution from boot loader
  • add new cookbook & recipe to mkxpud, and try switching to OE build to further strip down image size
  • Preware / Homebrew / quick install / developer mode in Open webOS?
If you find anything interesting and want to help, please do. Contact me @penk or #webos-port channel.

Notes on xPUD

I no longer maintain the old plate UI, but underlying system of xPUD is still actively developing. You can check out recent commits of added Google Chrome / Chromium supportSlateKit our reference UX for tablets, and right now we're working on Open webOS and maybe porting to Firefox Webian/Gaia.

HP Open webOS goes Beta. In September to announce future plans.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

The webOS Open source roadmap tasks for August are on track. The Beta release is out. And promises for September to reveal the future plans when the final task is accomplished, webOS Open source version 1.0
.
All the goodies about the August Open webOS beta release, directly from webOS open source project blog, after the break.

Open webOS August Edition
Eight months ago we announced our ambitious plan to make webOS available under an open source license and bring the innovation of the webOS platform to the open source community. We are proud to have hit another milestone with today’s Beta release.
We delivered on our promise
It has taken a lot of hard work, long hours and weekend sacrifices by our engineering team to deliver on our promise and we have accomplished this goal.
The Beta release is comprised of 54 webOS components available as opensource. This brings over 450,000 lines of code released under the Apache 2.0 license, which is one of the most liberal and accepted in the open source community.
Ideal environment for developers
Today’s release provides— not one— but two build environments.
Our desktop build provides the ideal development environment for enhancing the webOS user experience with new features and integrating state of the art open source technologies. Developers can now use all their desktop tools on powerful development machines.
Our OpenEmbedded build provides the ideal development environment for porting webOS to new and exciting devices.
New build & Desktop functionality
OpenEmbedded was a natural choice for many reasons:
  • Its widespread community adoption
  • Excellent cross-compiling support for embedded platforms
  • And support for multiple hardware architectures
The build provides an ARM emulator, running core services such as db8 and node.js.We are actively converging on an OE Core image which boots to System Manager and the full webOS experience.
The desktop build brings together all of the elements released so far on the Ubuntu desktop. Our upleveled System Manager now has support for applications, including the Core Applications such as Calendar and Contacts, with their underlying Synergy services. What’s more, many 3rd party Enyo apps are supported too.
Community: Getting involved
No Beta release would be complete without a full complement of ways for the community to contribute and engage with us.  Come join the community to discuss porting, features and fixes on our mailing lists. You can also submit and track bugs and feature requests in our public Jira system.
Finally, you spoke, and we listened. We have enlisted feedback from the community and have selected an approach to contributions inspired by the popular Linux Certificate of Origin.
Community activity
Great collaboration continues on the Community Edition with the release of LunaCE. The webOS-Ports team have combined the community efforts into one package and made it simple to install on to TouchPad devices through their Preware software.
The latest release brings a host of new features including new Gestures and Card Stack Tabs.
As we work with the community to deliver innovation to the webOS platform, we will highlight and promote the most innovative and noteworthy contributions. Let us know of your breakthroughs and where you might need help. We have the specialists to assist.
Be part of our growth
We are continuing our hiring drive. Some great people have come on board and we are looking to add even more. Head on over to our jobs page for a full list of open positions.
Stay tuned for more updates from us, with the September release we will announce our future plans for Open webOS.
Show me the money!
So what does it look like? Below is a screen shot of the Open webOS Beta running on a Ubuntu desktop. The screen shot shows the iconic card view of the system running multiple applications.
Open webOS running on Ubuntu desktop
The excitement continues to build as we approach 1.0 and beyond. Looking forward to hearing from and seeing you online in the community.
