LG and QT expand partnership on Next Gen devices running WebOS.

LG TO EXPAND PARTNERSHIP WITH QT ON NEXT GENERATION EMBEDDED DEVICES RUNNING WEBOS

Companies Sign MOU to Embed webOS in Future Devices
Targeting Consumer, Automotive and Industrial Automation Sectors.

LG Electronics (LG) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with The Qt Company, the Finnish-based software developer behind the Qt Project, to expand its existing collaboration on webOS. The expanded partnership will focus on embedding LG’s open source webOS platform in future automotive, robotics and smart home devices as well as positioning webOS as a reference operation system of Qt.
The partnership will guarantee more efficient management of resources required to port Qt and minimize gaps between Qt and webOS, leading to the best user experience for AI and IoT customers. With Q’s expertise in user experience (UX) and LG’s knowledge of products, the collaboration will create a powerful development environment for developers, engineers and designers to create innovative and immersive apps and devices.
“Our vision to create highly innovative, AI-powered and content-ready smart embedded devices using the webOS platform is more attainable with Qt as a partner,” said Dr. I.P. Park, president and CTO of LG Electronics. “Designing and developing these extremely complex systems requires more advanced software development capabilities than ever before and close collaboration between hardware and software experts is the foundation of this collaboration with Qt.”
Qt is a software tool for developing Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to deliver intuitive and modern UI/UX design and powerful touch functions in consumer and automotive devices. Since 2014, LG has relied on the application development framework of Qt to provide an intuitive and easy user experience for smart TVs and information displays running webOS. Qt will also play a key role in the development of webOS Auto, planned for deployment in future automotive infotainment systems.
“LG has been a consumer electronics leader for generations, which is one of the many reasons they’ve become such a trusted partner of Qt,” said Juha Varelius, CEO of Qt. “With its initiative to expand the reach of webOS into rapidly-growing markets, LG is underscoring the massive potential of Qt-enabled connected experiences. By collaborating with LG on this initiative, we’re able to make it easy as possible for our customers to build devices that bring a new definition to the word ‘smart’.”

WebOS now runs on Raspberry Pi 3.

WebOS Open Source Edition or OSE is intended at connected devices from smartwatches to refrigerators, and from telephones to printers. The initial release has been optimised for the Raspberry Pi 3, but other platforms will follow soon.

Apache 2.0 licence

To facilitate code sharing and distribution LG has adopted the Apache 2.0 licencing model for webOS. Developers are invited to join the project and LG promises to offer serious support.

The newly liberated OS relies on the open source Web application framework Enact — itself built upon the React UI library — for application development. QT 5.6, Luna Surface Manager (LSM) and Blink are other cornerstones of the OS.

Get it from GitHub

The webOS OSE code is available from GitHub. Building it requires a computer with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit installed; building inside virtual machines is not supported at the moment. Detailed instructions can be found here: webosOSE

WebOS is now an Open source platform. LG Press Release.

Evolution of LG WebOS.

The WebOS  platform was originaly developed by Palm in a great effort to make new smartphones and tablets for the internet age. Palm made several Palm smartphones as PalmPre and one tablet called the TouchPad made by HP but they were not succesful.

However the software platform is the pioneer of many features of what you see and use on any iPhone or Android smartphone at this time.

HP bought Palm WebOS and sold it to LG who started to implement it on Smarts TV until now and keep going. LG made some smartwatches with WebOS to attend some cars makers companies like Audi, but did not go out with great volumens of  them for the consumer.

Now LG wants to go beyond the Smart TVs, refrigerators  and is offering WebOS as an Open Source to the public, encouraging you to make it work on new products as smartwatches, robots,  laptops, tablets etc as you can notice on the  above picture and here below.

Press Release:

As part of a broader effort to make webOS even more accessible to today’s consumers and industries, LG Electronics (LG) entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a federal government body to more actively advance its philosophy of open platform, open partnership and open connectivity.

The National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) is the governmental body within South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) responsible for developing the country’s IT sector.

LG will solicit webOS business proposals from hundreds of start-ups recommended by NIPA and shortlist the most viable ones to provide logistical and technical support with commercialization as the ultimate goal. With LG’s backing, startups will take part in international events such as Open Source Summit and OSCON to share their ideas and initiatives with other industry influencers.

Toward its goal of expanding the webOS global footprint, LG developed an open source version of its platform, webOS Open Source Edition, now available to the public at webosose.org

Developers can download the source code free as well as taking advantage of related tools, guides and forums on the site to become more familiar with webOS and its inherent benefits as a smart devices platform. And because webOS is a Linux-kernel-based multitasking OS with support for HTML5 and CSS3, webOS will be quite familiar to even new developers.

“When LG adopted webOS for our popular smart TV lineup in 2013, it did so with the knowledge that webOS had tremendous potential,” said Dr. I.P. Park, Chief Technology Officer at LG Electronics. “webOS has come a long way since then and is now a mature and stable platform ready to move beyond TVs to join the very exclusive group of operating systems that have been successfully commercialization at such a mass level. As we move from an app-based environment to a web-based one, we believe the true potential of webOS has yet to be seen.”

LG just upgraded WebOS from 4.0 to 5.30.01 for Smart TVs?

These guys from techwibe are saying that they have already updated an LG LH 604 T Smart TV Full HD Version from LG WebOS 4.0 to LG WebOS 5.30.01 and using his LG LH 604 T Full HD version Smart TV  found the following:

Note : You can’t directly go from WebOS 3.5 to WebOS 5.3 .

My experience after using LG LH 604 T Full HD Version review after using it for 4 months.

What did we checked before switching or buying this Television ?

Pros

The picture quality, price, Miracast to mirror my laptop screen and ability to stream 1080p videos without any problem.

Is there a non FHD version ?

Yes and the price is lower and all the specs same as that of FHD version.

Every thing in short after my 4 months of experience.

Super sharp display (FHD, IPS Panel) and viewing angles

Cheaper than other bands

Dust won’t settle on your screen, but on other parts dust may settle if you are living a dusty region
WebOS frequently updated with patches.

Eye comfort mode

Good sound quality

Supports almost all video and audio formats like MKV, AVI, DiviX, AAC etc

Inbuilt apps for Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video and some country specific apps
Support for Miracast or screen sharing or Inter WiDi.

Note WiDi is used only in old laptops models

Screen can be turned off, when playing only music.

Remote with pointer mouse, so you can type songs or movie names quickly in YouTube, Netflix etc on the on screen keyboard. Also when you connect or mirror your laptop screen to this TV, remote pointer can be used as mouse and there is scroller on the remote. But only double click supported, no right nor left clicks

Subtitles in the video is supported

2 Years LG warranty (Note this is country specific, so do ask your seller about this)

Very less power consumption, screen consumes 4% of power, speakers consumes (20 Watt) 3% of total power input

Cons

TV lags

Sound mode can’t be changed quickly like picture mode

No support for wireless headphones

Web browser closes after we viewed around 15 1080p YouTube videos, it says out of memory and during restart of the browser the crashed web page is shown for us to continue playing videos

In built YouTube app settings has no option to set resolution of video to play only 1080p videos

Universal remote costs around $75 if you need to buy a new one, note : till now there are no probs with my universal which I clubbed with my set top box (CISCO one) and all functions are supported

During Miracast laptop mouse lags and still now I don’t know how to solve this issue.

Documents like docx,PDF can’t be opened from flash drive or hard drive, but from Miracast its possible.

Does it support USB mode of android mobiles ?

My Sony Xperia USB mode supported but my lenovo USB mode not supported and this is weird!
Final Thought

For this price and with this much features loaded, we say its a good go one.

Unveiled at CES® 2017, LG’s new flagship Door-in-Door® refrigerator features a 29-inch touch LCD display, which, thanks to its InstaView feature, instantly turns transparent with just two knocks of the screen and allows users to look inside the refrigerator without opening the door. Now with webOS, consumers can also explore a host of WiFi-enabled features directly on the refrigerator, creating a streamlined and powerful food management system all housed directly on the front of the fridge door.
Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service gives users access to an intelligent personal assistant that, in addition to searching recipes, can play music, place Prime-eligible orders from Amazon.com including groceries, add items to a shopping list and more. With over 6,000 skills available, Alexa can also control one’s smart home, request car service, set kitchen timers and check the weather – all hands-free by just using your voice. With Alexa, daily tasks in the kitchen – such as cooking or planning for the day – turn into a dynamic, entertaining experience.
In addition to the services provided by Amazon, the LG Smart InstaView refrigerator offers a variety of other convenience-enhancing features. The Smart Tag menu allows users to add stickers and tags on the screen to indicate which foods are stored as well as the ability to input the expiration date of each item, so the refrigerator can issue reminders when foods near expiration. Family members can set up memos for each other and create to-do lists that display on the screen. To check inside the refrigerator remotely, a 2.0 megapixel panoramic super-wide-lens camera captures images of the interior from a variety of different angles which are accessible via smartphone, a must-have feature for anyone who would like to see what’s at home while grocery shopping.

Now consumers have even more convenience in their homes, all just by using their voice and Alexa,” said Mike George, vice president, Amazon Alexa. “In working with an innovative home appliance company like LG, we can truly showcase how much better life can be for consumers everywhere starting with updating one of the most important appliances in the home.”

The first LG OLED WebOS TV produced for Bang & Olufsen to be launched in 2017 for Smart Home integration.

Bang & Olufsen enters a strategic technology partnership with LG Electronics regarding development and production of Bang & Olufsen’s future TV.

Strategic partnership with LG Electronics Inc (”LG”)

As previously announced, Bang & Olufsen a/s ("Bang & Olufsen") initiated a review to identify strategic and structural options to increase scale and further reduce complexity within Bang & Olufsen.

As a result of this review, Bang & Olufsen has entered a strategic technology partnership with LG, one of the world’s largest producers of TVs and a technological frontrunner with its leading OLED technology and WebOS. The agreement entails that Bang & Olufsen will focus on its unique competencies within design, acoustics and smart home integration within TV development, and combine this with LG’s technological leadership within OLED technology.

“This partnership with LG will enable Bang & Olufsen to stay at the forefront of innovation in the TV category, a category which is currently undergoing significant change and which is very important to Bang & Olufsen. The partnership will address Bang & Olufsen’s key challenges related to scale and complexity”,says CEO Tue Mantoni.

The partnership will help solve a key strategic challenge as Bang & Olufsen will achieve technological capabilities and scale needed to improve the long-term profitability of the company. The partnership will allow Bang & Olufsen to focus on core competencies within acoustics and design, while further optimising the company’s supply chain, development, production and service.

The first OLED TV produced by LG for Bang & Olufsen as a result of the partnership is expected to be launched in 2017. Further, the partnership involves collaboration in other areas such as license and product bundle activities.

As a consequence of the partnership, Bang & Olufsen expects to improve gross margins and reduce capacity costs. The agreement has an annual savings potential of DKK 150-200m when fully implemented over the next three years. As such, the partnership is an important step towards achieving the financial targets set out for 2017/18 of an EBIT-margin of approximately 7 per cent and a positive free cash flow.

As a result of the partnership Bang & Olufsen expects to realize restructuring costs of DKK 10 to 15 million, of which up to DKK 5 million will be realized in the fourth quarter of 2015/16. The restructuring costs have not been included in the current outlook for the 2015/16 financial year.

Dialogue regarding a potential launch of a takeover offer.

In continuation of company announcement no. 15.07 dated 26 November 2015, Bang & Olufsen can inform that a dialogue is ongoing with one potential offeror that may or may not lead to an offer for the whole or part of the issued share capital of Bang & Olufsen.

At present, Bang & Olufsen has not entered into any binding commitments, and uncertainty remains as to the outcome of the dialogue with the potential offeror.

ISE 2016: IntuiLab Releases First Multitouch-Capable Digital Signage Solution For LG’s webOS Signage.

IntuiFace now provides native support for webOS Signage from LG

IntuiLab is the first company to enable (multi) touch content creation for webOS Signage from LG. With this combined solution, companies can simplify their transition from traditional passive signage to a more modern, interactive approach.

IntuiLab, provider of IntuiFace, the world’s premier no-coding interactive experience creation platform, is pleased to announce support for LG’s webOS operating system. This is the first multitouch-capable signage creation option for webOS, enabling businesses to invest in and realize the added benefits of interactive over passive signage. IntuiLab will showcase their new webOS support in the LG Electronics booth, Booth 11-K70, at ISE 2016 in Amsterdam, February 9-12, 2016.
Built from the ground-up with touch capabilities at its core, the IntuiFace platform enables businesses to create engaging, highly interactive HTML5-based experiences without coding that can be deployed within minutes onto any PC, tablet and kiosk including – now – webOS-based signage devices.
These touch-first experiences can incorporate a wide variety of media formats, any live connection to cloud-based data and APIs (including social networks and the Internet of Things), and all of the core capabilities necessary for successful signage and kiosk deployments, including fine grained user data collection, scheduling and the ability to work offline.
The marriage between IntuiFace and webOS is rooted in work by IntuiLab to port its patented touch gesture recognition engine to run natively within the new PC-less touch-enabled webOS Web browser. The resulting HTML5-based runtime - complementing IntuiLab’s previous work for other platforms – enables IntuiFace users and partners to access touch-first experiences simply by entering a URL in the webOS browser.
The combination of these unique capabilities with the dramatically reduced total cost of ownership achieved by SoC-based webOS devices creates a compelling low cost option in the signage market for content creation, cost and speed of deployment. It is estimated that projects built with these two platforms reduce total cost of ownership by 65% and time-to-deployment by 50% over conventional display and content delivery approaches.
“We are excited to offer our customers true touch capability with the availability of IntuiFace on webOS,” said Warren Lewis, Regional Sales Director of Western and Southern Europe, Information Display, LG Electronics Europe B2B. “For organizations in search of an affordable, accessible path to creating touch-enabled digital signage content – even organizations with no development skills - IntuiFace and LG offer a uniquely compelling, turnkey package.”
“Devices running webOS have a price point and ease of use that make interactive signage deployments – the natural evolution of passive signage – an excellent choice for businesses of any size,” added Vincent Encontre, CEO, IntuiLab. “Thanks to our technology partnership with LG, IntuiLab has been able to make interactive signage creation accessible as well. We believe consumers will be amazed at what can be achieved, triggering a significant increase in touch-based webOS projects.”
Touch-enabled experiences built using IntuiFace Composer can be published to a public or private cloud storage account and then downloaded and run on any webOS device using IntuiFace Player. This new solution is available now for the LG SM5B/3B/5KB series with both a free option and a low cost annual subscription. Composer can be downloaded to a Windows PC and trialed for free without a time limit. Additional background information can be found here. A quick start guide is located here.
IntuiLab will also preview beacon support at ISE 2016. No appointment necessary. Simply drop by the LG Electronics booth, Booth 11-K70.
