Dead Technology, RIP: Windows Live Messenger, Google Reader, Winamp, Altavista, Facebook Home.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

In 2013 several technological products were no longer active.

Each year tech companies look forward to conquer our hearts-and technology-pockets with promises of revolutionary products.

But occasionally are forced to recognize that not all products break hearts.

Sometimes they decide to shut down the production line, other surprise your audience retiring a product that still has fans.

And 2013 was no exception. Some products sparkled at launch and later became ghost towns. Others failed to become big stars despite having loyal users.

Here is a list of the five ghosts of past year and others who were close to becoming spirits.

Google Reader.

The aggregator of content has become one of the internet products with loyal users. The platform housed RSS ( summaries of website content ) allowing their users may have in one place the content that mattered most to them anywhere.

However , on July 1, 2013 , Google turned off the servers Reader click saying "we understand that may not agree with our decision." Weeks ago the company had said that : " Although the product has loyal followers , they have been reduced over the years."

But why not fight for your products? What's behind the decision ?

In September 2011, in a call with investors the company CEO , Larry Page , announced that it would begin to " clean house" . Since then, and in less than two years , the browser closed more than 70 of its products and services to focus on those who really care about and not overextend . " jack of all trades, master of none " , they say .

Facebook Home.

The excitement among the tech press was at its peak boiling the April 4, 2013 . Facebook was launching the world its own smartphone to compete with Google and Apple. The problem is that it did not happen .

Instead the world's largest social network Facebook introduced Home, a desk or welcome screen mounted on the Android operating system of Google .

The idea was that with this program Home users can access photos and content of the social network on their mobile screen permanently. Home was intended to " interact with people, not apps ."

The system could be downloaded on select phones , including some Samsung - or be acquired by purchasing the new HTC phone designed to Facebook First Home. Rumors indicate that the phone sold more than 20,000 units in the United States and its European launch was delayed to correct system errors . Critics have generally given bad reviews . The phone , after all, does not seem to have many friends .

WinAmp.

This Thursday, December 20th, Winamp will join the world of technological dead. Gone are his battles with RealPlayer and other media playback are born in the nineties they were able to not only play music, but also to transmit the internet! ... something that is now our daily bread.

He was one of the first products to be able to run a variety of music files besides mp3. But even more important was the first player to that one could "dress" because it had different skins in various colors to suit the user's visual appetite.

However, in the age of Spotify, iTunes, Google Play and friends desktop media players seem to have their days numbered.

Altavista

Another glory of the past who left us . Today we all talk about Google - even turn it into a verb - to refer to Internet search . But Page and Brin site was not always there. There was an era in Altavista network that dominated the skyline .

Born in 1995, this search engine became an instant success because it was able to search thousands of pages in a few seconds thanks to an efficient mechanism to read the codes of the pages and a powerful team of servers that were capable of performing the task with speed .

Two years after its creation was on top and was the most used search engine . He even threw a translation service online called Babel Fish - a tribute to the classic science fiction Hitchhiker 's Guide to the Galaxy or intergalactic traveler , which became very popular guide .

But the summit was the beginning of his downfall. Altavista started being acquired by companies that transformed it into a portal squandering its appeal. After several generations came at the hands of Yahoo in July this year closed the service.

Windows Live Messenger

Just when Messenger was placed as the champion defeating IM ICQ and others , things began to change. Social networking and smartphones imposed their Snapchats Whatsapp and took up arms .

Perhaps it is not surprising that Microsoft has decided to abandon its strategy to focus on Messenger and Skype.

The company has not officially closed Messenger. Indeed merged service with Skype and calls it an "improvement" . But in practical terms Messenger (born 1999) dug his own grave when April 30 arrived Skype integration with Brazil, the last country in the list.

The service will remain active in China and a few months in the world , but not over what came to be.

Other ghosts that were raised in 2013 were Windows RT (the operating system for tablets rumored to come out of production) iGoogle ( Google interactive portal , also a victim of the cleaning company and the redesign of Yahoo Mail ( which upset a lot of users) .

Nokia Windows RT 10.1 inch Tablet with HDMI, USB ports and battery on keyboard cover, coming.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Nokia  Windows RT   10.1  inch Tablet  with HDMI,  USB  ports  and  battery on  keyboard  cover, coming.

In March 28,2102 we reported Nokia was working on a Windows tablet rumored at that time as Nokia Lumia Coffee Tab , that probably was just a concept, as you can see on the video below:

Nokia now is said to plan packing the Windows RT   10.1  inch Tablet   device with a cover similar to the one Microsoft used for Surface, and to include HDMI and USB ports on it.

The cover will include not only a keyboard, two USB ports and a kickstand for the tablet, but also a battery that will further extend the usage time of the device.

Also featuring cellular connectivity inside, the device is expected to make an official debut at AT&T in the United States.

Nokia’s Windows RT tablet PC is expected to boast a 10-hour capacity. Apparently, the handset vendor is planning to manufacture only a small number of this device, but is also looking at the launch of a Windows 8-based slate at a later date.

Recent reports have suggested that Nokia may unveil its tablet at Mobile World Congress in February.

Samsung ATIV Tab Microsoft’s Windows RT specifications.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung just launched a portfolio of new devices under its new “ATIV” brand, and among them is a pure tablet running Microsoft’s Windows RT and a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. The ATIV Tab, as Samsung calls it, is a beautiful 10-inch tablet that delivers a full Windows 8 experience and features that intersects the lifestyles of casual user and professional. The best thing about a tablet running on a Snapdragon processor is that unlike traditional PC processors, a Snapdragon powered-device is designed to provide a full day of use on a single charge, while lasting days on standby.
At 10-inches, the Samsung ATIV Tab boasts one of the best-looking screens on a tablet, complete with a 1,366-by-768 resolution. In addition to an optimal viewing experience, the ATIV Tab is exquisitely thin, measuring a scant 8.9mm and weighing just 570 grams (~1.26 lbs), yet it made room for features such as USB 2.0, micro HDMI, microSD slot (up to 64MB) and front (1.9Mpxl) and rear-facing (5 Mpxl) cameras. One of the main strengths of the ATIV Tab is that it’s so well-connected with the gamut of wireless connections, including Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11n WiFi Direct, NFC, and GPS.

Samsung, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba working on Windows RT devices.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba working on Windows RT  devices.

Qualcomm Inc is providing chips for new devices from Dell Incand Samsung Electronics Co. that run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows RT operating system, people familiar with the matter said.

The newest version of Windows, to be released in October, will be the first to work with chips based on the ARM Holdings PLC architecture, not just those from traditional partners Intel Corp.  and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Microsoft and system makers are turning to makers of ARM-based chips--used in most smartphones and tablets--to make inroads against Apple Inc.'s  iPad, which continues to dominate the market. Both Dell and Samsung are working on tablets that run on Qualcomm's application processors, people familiar with the matter said.

The Dell product is a notebook that converts to a tablet, one of the people said.

Other details weren't immediately known. Microsoft and its hardware partners have said products will be unveiled as the market approaches the Windows 8 and Windows RT launch.Qualcomm dominates the smartphone market, but it has had some setbacks with Windows RT.

PC giant Hewlett-Packard Co.  was working with Qualcomm on a Windows RT device, but it said in June that it had set aside immediate plans for the new technology. Instead, H-P said it would focus on Intel-powered tablets for business users. And Microsoft chose to use processors from Nvidia Corp.  when it created its self-branded tablet, dubbed Surface.

Some PC makers have privately complained about the lack of software and other aspects of adopting Windows RT, including the question of consumer demand for the product. Adding to the challenges for companies considering Windows RT is Microsoft's push to make its own hardware. The Surface announcement is believed to have surprised and angered computer makers, which now face the prospect of competing with their software partner.
Microsoft on Monday provided some new details about the development of devices that use Windows RT including discussing which PC makers are working on tablets. The company has limited the number of computer designers who could work with chip makers for an initial release of Windows RT tablets. Nvidia has been working with Asustek Computer Inc. and Lenovo Group Ltd. according to people familiar with the matter.
The final Windows RT chip supplier, Texas Instruments Inc. , has been working with Toshiba Corp. on Windows RT devices, with the two earlier this year demonstrating a tablet. Questions about the device emerged following Microsoft's blog post Monday that left Toshiba off the list of Windows RT tablet partners.

A Toshiba spokesman said the company plans to release a statement later Monday. TI, meanwhile, said its Windows RT development and collaboration with Microsoft are "still going strong."
