Toshiba exits Fujitsu handsets Joint Venture.

Toshiba today confirmed long-standing speculation that it is exiting its Japanese mobile handset joint-venture with Fujitsu, by transferring its 19.9 percent stake in the venture to Fujitsu.

Fujitsu has increased its stake from 80.1 percent to 100 percent as a result of the deal and is expected integrate the subsidiary with its existing mobile devices business. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Formed in October 2010 as a consolidated subsidiary of the Fujitsu Group, Fujitsu Toshiba Mobile Communications will now be renamed Fujitsu Mobile Communications and will become wholly-owned by its parent.

The JV has approximately 300 employees and a market cap of around JPY450 million (US$5.4 million).

Fujitsu Toshiba Mobile mainly builds 3G devices for Japan’s second-placed operator, KDDI, but had struggled to build market share in the crowded Japanese handsets market.

For Toshiba, the JV was seen as an attempt to shore up losses in its former own-branded handset operations by letting Fujitsu effectively oversee its mobile business.

UAE: Google launches  YouTube, a  UAE version.

Google said on Sunday it has launched a local version of YouTube for the UAE.

The new YouTube.co.ae comes as the video platform continues to build on the largest collection of videos online.

The local version of YouTube means that people who visit the site will see on the homepage the most popular videos in the UAE along with those that are rising in popularity, Google said in a statement.

From YouTube's inception, people in the Middle East have been active members of the global community, both watching and uploading countless videos, it added.

Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched his own YouTube channel in February.

The Dubai Government Media Office announced the launch, saying it was the latest move by Sheikh Mohammed, also vice president and prime minister of the UAE, to better interact with the public.

YouTube in the Middle East and North Africa has seen the number of playbacks doubling in the past year and users in MENA upload one hour of video per minute.

There are 167 million video views a day in MENA, putting the region in the number two spot in the world, behind the US and ahead of Brazil.

"We have seen enormous growth for YouTube in the MENA region and expect this expansion to continue even more significantly with the launch of the UAE domain. " said Ari kesisoglu, managing director, Middle East North Africa at Google.

"A primary objective for us is to encourage local content from regional users, which we believe will be fuelled by this latest development."

Last year, loca YouTube versions were launched for Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Yemen.

Sony and Panasonic expanding 3D-enabled TVs line up with LG’s technology.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Panasonic and Sony have opted to lean a little further on the 3D screen technology of LG Electronics, according to a senior LG executive Sunday.

In a perpetual battle with rival Samsung Electronics for bigger stakes in the growing global 3D TV market, LG’s film-based 3D technology has shown a clear advantage. It is cheaper than Samsung’s battery-powered option although arguments on technological competitiveness continue.

LG has racked up success in 3D TV sales in China and North America as well formed tie-ups with many players.

``Panasonic and Sony are planning to expand the lineup of 3D-enabled TVs this year. The key point is that their upcoming models will use LG’s technology,’’ said Nho Seok-ho, head of LG Electronics’ LCD TV division in an interview.

Nho said on the sidelines of his participation in an in-house event, ``3D TV Festival’’ at Lotte World, an amusement park in Seoul.

``That’s why we are sure to increase sales of 3D TVs this year,’’ said the executive, the right-hand man of LG’s TV chief Kwon Hee-won.

Panasonic and Sony were initially ready to adopt Samsung’s technology but they’ve decided cut costs and improve their bottom lines by using the cheaper version.

``The fact that more 3D TVs from Panasonic and Sony will be equipped with LG technology is significant as Japanese TV makers account for over 30 percent of the global 3D TV demand,’’ Nho said.

Sony rarely mentions that it has been selling 32-inch and 42-inch 3D TV sets with film-patterned 3D technology in China since this year, while Panasonic is relying more on LG for 3D screens for several of its sets.

LG plans to add a 60-inch model to its 3D TV lineup of a 65- and 72-inch set in June to actively respond to consumer demand, according to the executive.
