Year 2020: WorldWide Smart TV Platforms market share: Samsung Tizen 12.7%, LG WebOS 7.3%, SONY Playstation 6.4%, Amazon Fire 6.4% says SA.

Samsung’s Tizen smart TV streaming platform further extended its lead in 2020 as the number of Tizen devices in use worldwide increased by 21% year-on-year to 162.3 million, according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics’ TV Streaming Platforms service. Strong growth was also seen in Google’s Android TV (+42%), Roku TV OS (+40%), and Amazon’s Fire OS (+35%), while Sony’s PlayStation, Microsoft’s Xbox, and Google Cast each saw declines.

According to the report, Global TV Streaming Platform and Vendor Market Share, the total number of TV streaming devices in use worldwide increased by 122 million in 2020 compared to a year earlier, reaching 1.28 billion.

Tizen retained the number one position overall, with a share of 12.7%, up from 11.6% a year earlier. Tizen was followed by LG’s WebOS (7.3%), Sony PlayStation (6.4%) and Fire OS (6.4%).

The report predicts that the number of Tizen devices in use will increase to 184 million by the end of this year, while Google, LG, Roku, and Amazon will continue to battle for the other leading positions.

TV streaming platforms like Tizen, WebOS, Fire OS and Roku TV OS are the foundations of the new age of television and video viewing. Samsung’s Tizen platform has grown strongly over the past five years, overtaking more established platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Apple’s TV OS.

Samsung is now monetizing Tizen’s growth by offering the platform’s capabilities to integrate and deliver targeted advertising to TV and video viewers on TV screens. Amazon, Roku, and Android TV have also been growing rapidly in recent years and are likely to provide stiff competition to Samsung in the next few years.

There is significant regional variation in platform usage. Roku is the leading platform in the US, where it controls nearly 20% of connected TV devices in use. However, Tizen is the leader in 22 of the 25 countries surveyed in the report, and WebOS ranks second in 13 markets.

“Samsung’s smart TV market leadership gives it a great foundation to sustain Tizen as the leading TV streaming platform for years to come,” says David Watkins, Director, TV Streaming Platforms. “However several other major players are also growing rapidly and many have the resources to build a serious challenge to Samsung if the strategic ambition is there.”

“The transition to global internet-based television and video services during this decade will be enabled by smart TV systems controlled by a few leading technology vendors,” comments David Mercer, VP and Principal Analyst.

“As streaming on TVs becomes the preferred video viewing behaviour, content providers will rely increasingly on the UI, analytics, advertising and content discovery capabilities of connected TV platforms and the firms controlling them. As we are seeing in smartphones today, we envisage strategic conflicts eventually emerging between content and TV streaming platforms which will raise challenging structural and regulatory questions.”

Mercedes-Benz unveiled its first all-electric SUV.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC is powered by two electric motors, providing all-wheel drive and 402 horsepower. The crossover SUV -- the company’s first vehicle under the new EQ technology brand -- offers a range of about 200 miles on a full charge of the 80 kWh battery.

The German luxury car maker’s latest SUV is part of a plan to aggressively launch new electric vehicles, targeting a market that has been largely dominated by Tesla. Other traditional automakers such as General Motors, Ford, BMW and Audi are spending billions of dollars to develop new battery-powered vehicles, betting that demand will continue to grow. In a challenge to Tesla, German luxury giants BMW, Audi and Porsche each plan to launch their own electric SUVs.

Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler, told Fox News reporters that Tesla has been successful in challenging luxury car makers that compete in the same price bracket as the upstart company, according to remarks cited by Reuters. He also said Mercedes-Benz’s plans to expand its footprint in the electric car market are “aggressive.”

The EQC’s estimated electric range is below that of the base version of the Tesla Model X, which has an EPA-rated range of 237 miles. Jaguar, which entered the competition with the I-PACE, gets 240 miles from its electric crossover. As far as performance, the EQC’s zero-to-60 time of 4.9 seconds matches the Model X.

The Model X has a starting price of $79,500, while the Jaguar I-PACE costs about $10,000 less.

The Mercedes-Benz EQC will go on sale in the U.S. in 2020. Mercedes-Benz has yet to announce pricing.

Tesla shares dropped more than 4 percent on Tuesday after Goldman Sachs reinstated coverage of the stock with a “sell” rating. Analysts at the investment bank warned of increased competition in the electric vehicle market.

Worldwide Detachable tablets market to grow 73% in 2016. Windows 53.3%, iOS 28.5%, Android 18.2%

The chart below is a projected forecast year to year of the detachable worldwide market share from 2016 to 2020. Data might change at the end of the year 2016

Worldwide tablet shipments will drop to 195 million units in 2016, down -5.9% from 2015, according to a new International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker forecast.

Looking beyond 2016, IDC expects the overall market to return to positive growth, albeit single digit, driven by growing demand for detachable devices. This somewhat hybrid category that brings together slate tablets and PCs is expected to grow from 16.6 million shipments in 2015 to 63.8 million in 2020.

"Beyond the growing demand for detachable devices, we're also witnessing an increase in competition within this segment that will help drive design, innovation, and a decline in average prices," said Jean Philippe Bouchard, Research Director, Tablets.

"At the latest Mobile World Congress, we saw new entrants, like Alcatel and Huawei, coming from the mobile space and expanding their portfolio to address the demand for detachables. Everyone in the industry recognizes that traditional personal computers like desktops and notebooks will potentially be replaced by detachables in the coming years and this is why we will see a lot of new products being introduced this year."

The change from slate form factor to detachables will bring along two other changes to the tablet industry. First, devices with larger screen sizes (9" and above) will experience growth throughout the forecast while those under 9 inches will decline. And second, Microsoft-based devices will begin taking share from the other platforms, most notably Android.

"This momentous shift in form factor will bring along the first significant impact of Windows-based devices that the tablet market has seen," said Ryan Reith, Program Director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers.

"Windows 10 seems to be making headway in both the PC and tablet markets, mainly driven by devices with larger screen sizes. Despite the free licensing on products under 9 inches the growth for Windows-based tablets will be primarily on devices with displays between 9 and 13 inches.

Until we see a day where touch is introduced for Mac OS X and inroads are paved to bring Android and Chrome more closely aligned, we believe Windows remains the logical choice for detachable products."
