LG Display had a 92,5% for High End vehicles OLEDs Global Market share in the year 2020.

According to Omdia, a market research company on displays, LG Display accounted for 92.5 percent of the market for vehicle OLED panels in terms of sales in 2020. Samsung Display accounted for 6.9 percent and China's BOE the remaining 0.6 percent.

LG Display developed plastic OLEDs (P-OLEDs) in 2019. Starting with the Escalade of General Motors (GM), it has been supplying the new vehicle display products for luxury cars of global automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac. As P-OLED panels are expensive, LG Display’s main customers are high-end car manufacturers less burdened with parts prices.

P-OLED panel makers use plastic instead of glass substrates in producing panels. This allows them to create three-dimensional designs as well as two-dimensional designs such as circles and polygons. P-OLED panels are also considered suitable for cars with curved surfaces. Currently, the mainstream of the vehicle panel market is liquid crystal displays (LCDs), but the proportion of P-OLEDs is expected to jump in the future as it has the advantage of offering good picture quality and strong flexibility.

Samsung Display is seeking to expand its market share. It will supply OLED panels for Hyundai Motor’s IONIQ 5, the first model to be produced using the automaker’s electric vehicle platform E-GMP.

Samsung Display was able to supply OLED panels to Hyundai Motor as it has been supplying OLED panels to Audi's electric vehicle e-Tron since 2018. The e-Tron has rear view cameras on the side of the car doors, allowing drivers to see the rear of their vehicles on an OLED display. A similar technology will be applied to the IONIQ 5.

The market for OLED panels for vehicles will grow by more than 60 percent annually from 240,000 units in 2020 to 4.4 million units in 2025, IHS Markit forecast.

However, small OLED products for vehicles offer low profitability. "We cannot rule out the possibility that Hyundai Motor decided to collaborate with Samsung Display to lower costs,” an industry insider said.

LG Display could supply LCD TV panels to Samsung Electronics. In talks.

Samsung Electronics Co. is in talks with competitor LG Display Co. for the purchase of display panels, industry sources said Monday, amid its transition to production of next-generation display.


Samsung Electronics and LG Display may sign a deal on LCD TV panel supply in the near future.

The move came after Samsung Display Co., a display maker under Samsung Electronics, announced earlier this year that it will discontinue its LCD screen production from next year and will speed up its shift toward quantum-dot (QD) display.


Industry insiders originally predicted that Samsung Electronics could buy LCD panels from Chinese firms, such as China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., and BOE Technology Group Co., as well as Sharp Corp., now owned by Taiwan's Foxconn Group.

Analysts expect that LG Display's supply volume to be worth between 1 trillion (US$833 million) and 2 trillion won if the deal is secured. LG Display plans to supply large-size LCD panels from its plant in Guangzhou, China.

Samsung and LG are rivals in the TV industry, with the former representing QLED TV and the latter spearheading OLED TV. However, history shows the two sides can work as partners.

In 2017, Samsung Electronics received LCD screens for 65-inch and 75-inch TVs from LG Display after Sharp abruptly decided to cut its display supply.

Year 2020: Samsung and LG to supply Apple iPhones 5.4", 6.1", and 6.7" OLED Displays.



Samsung Display will supply Apple iPhones 2020 models 5.4" and 6.7" OLED displays with on-cell touch (called Y-OCTA technology) and Samsung Display with LG Display will supply the 6.1" OLED  display, with not on-cell touch technology.

Apple is also planning to release a model with 5G  network support alongside the 3 models above detailed for the fall of 2020.

Apple teams up with LG Display for foldable OLED screen. Foldable iPhone for 2020.


Samsung, Lenovo, and maybe LG are coming next year with their own foldable smartphone in 2018.

Samsung with an in-foldable version, Lenovo has the two versions in and out foldable, LG just the out foldable  and ZTE this year in a few days is presenting its out-foldable device.

Apple is taking its time and is projecting to present its version in 2020. Meanwhile Apple has team-up with LG Display for a foldable OLED screen for the iPhone foldable version. Not any sign at this time, if it will be in-foldable or out-foldable.

Also the LG Display sister company LG Innotek will develope the rigid flexible printed circuit board RFPCB. Both companies have recently created a task force for these purposes.

LG has been working for 3 years in foldable OLED screens and has improved upgrading the durability and the yield rate.

LG has recently started its first OLED production for phones at its E5 plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. The first batch of the production will be shipped to LG Electronics and some Chinese handset makers, while the production for iPhone is expected to start from as early as 2019 when its new plant, called E6, is completed in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.  
Apple is considering investing in the E6 plant in a push for LG to beef up OLED production. Sources say the two firms have tentatively agreed on the investment but details have not yet been finalized.

LG Display is building a 10.5G TFT-LCD factory.



According to South Korea-based Maeil Business News Korea, LG Display is building a 10.5G TFT-LCD factory with monthly production capacity of 60,000 glass substrates in Paju City, northwestern South Korea, with the first phase to kick off in February 2018.

The factory aims to cope with competition from China-based panel makers BOE Technology and China Star Optoelectronics Technology, which will begin production at a 10.5G TFT-LCD factory in China in the third quarter of 2018 and an 11G one in China in 2019.

Substrates at an 8.5G TFT-LCD factory can be cut into four 55-inch TV panels and 10.5G ones 10 55-inch TV panels.


LG Display will begin to convert equipment at a 8.5G TFT-LCD factory to producing OLED panels in March 2017 and is expected to begin converting the 10.5G TFT-LCD factory beginning 2020 to meet growing demand for OLED TVs.

LG to develop foldable smartphone.




LG Electronics, which has struggled to elevate its smartphone sales for years, is said to have recently jumped into developing foldable display possibly to adopt it for its future mobile devices. 


The Electronic Times reported on July 21 that LG Display, the Korean tech giant’s sister display-making unit, has started its own foldable display development following last year’s setting up of a related task force team. 

Citing unnamed sources, the daily said LG’s foldable smartphone can be used like a tablet when unfolded and become a smaller device when folded. 


LG Display recently signed a licensing deal with Canada’s IGNIS Innovation to share organic light-emitting diode circuit technology. Even though the company didn’t reveal the specifics, industry watchers predict it could be used for foldable display. 

Early this year, the company started installing production equipment for the sixth-generation plastic OLED at its E5 plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. Its operation is expected to start in the first half of next year.

LG Display declined to confirm the project.

Confirmed: Apple to adopt LG’s OLED for iPhones.




Apple will adopt organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays on iPhones starting in 2018, supplied by LG Display. As the number one smartphone vendor Apple has decided to use OLED, the global display panel industry is expected to change dramatically.

According to a report from Nikkei on Nov. 16, Apple has notified its suppliers about its future plans, with LG Display already planning capacity upgrades for high-volume OLED display production.

Apple will sell its new OLED iPhones three years later. OLED displays offer sharper images, brighter colors and better power efficiency compared to existing liquid crystal display (LCD). Also, flexible OLED displays allow a wide range of device design.


Samsung and LG commercialized OLEDs on their smartphones in 2010 for the first time in the world. However, Apple has stuck with advanced LCD after its release in 2007.

But initially Apple, which ships over 200 million iPhones a year, may opt for a mix of LCD and OLED until capacity can catch up. Apple is likely to use OLED only on some models of its new iPhone first.

As Apple has officially announced its plan to adopt Korean OLED, the global display market will face a transition in the future. With Samsung Electronics becoming the first to expand the investment in OLED, the company is currently the only company in the world that can reliably mass-produce OLED smartphone screens.

LG is expanding the market with OLED TVs. China’s display panel makers are also making active investment in new LCD display plants with government support.

Accordingly, the move will have a deleterious impact on Japanese display producers, which rely on LCD orders from Apple. It is realistically impossible for Japanese companies to catch up Korea’s OLED technology and its mass production system at once. 

Therefore, Sharp, which is currently seeking to rebuild its business after major restructuring, and Japan Display, which relies on Apple for 30% of its business, are expected to take a hit on their profits.

South Korea's LG Display said it will invest more than 10 trillion won ($8.71 billion) to build a large plant to make panels using organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, raising its big bet on the ultra-clear display technology.
The company said it will spend an initial 1.84 trillion won to begin building the plant, called P10, in Paju, South Korea, to make panels across all product segments including large screens for TVs and flexible OLED panels for devices such as smartwatches and auto displays.
Production is expected to begin in the first half of 2018.
Japan's Nikkei Asian Review reported without identifying sources that LG Display was building a new plant in anticipation of Apple Inc  adopting OLED technology for its iPhone in 2018. A spokeswoman for LG Display declined to comment to Reuters on the report.

LG Electronics Inc  and its affiliate LG Display are investing heavily on OLED for TVs, and LG Electronics recently slashed the prices of TV sets in the United States using OLED in a push to popularise the technology.

LG Display maintained its top position in the large-sized panel market for the sixth consecutive year


South Korea's LG Display Co. maintained its top position in the large-sized panel market for the sixth consecutive year, data showed Tuesday, coming in far above other South Korean and Taiwanese rivals.

LG  shipped 39.4 million units of display panels 9 inches or higher in the July-September period with a share of 22.5 percent, the data compiled by industry tracker IHS showed. It marked the 24th consecutive quarter for LG to sit on the throne in the segment.

Its  local rival, Samsung Display Co., followed with a 17.6 percent share, trailed by Taiwan-based Innolux Corp. and AU Optronics with 17.3 percent and 15.1 percent, respectively

"While  South Korean firms are still leading the display market, the rise of Chinese and Taiwanese players will intensify down the road," an industry source said.

"Thus,, local companies must make active investments for the future, such as in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) segment, to further expand their technology prowess over rivals," it added.

By sectors, Samsung Display outpaced LG Display in the TV market at 20.5 percent. As for the Ultra HD TV panel sector, their shares stood at 31.9 percent and 31.4 percent, respectively.

LG Display, however, defeated Samsung Display in the laptop panel market 27.2 percent to 17.2 percent.

Dr. Sang Beom Han, CEO and President of LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, said today that OLED represents a revolutionary leap in display technology that will change people’s lives as he delivered the opening keynote speech at IFA 2015 in Berlin.

“We are now living in an era of displays. Through displays, we share information. Through displays, we communicate. Through displays, we look into the future and dream about it,” said Dr. Han in his speech on “How displays will change our lives.”

Displays are becoming increasingly important as their application expands beyond consumer electronics and IT/mobile devices to cars, hospitals and schools.

“We want OLED to be the revolution of light that opens up the future we all want to live in,” said Dr. Han, who is the first display industry CEO to have been given the honor of delivering the opening IFA keynote address, which is normally reserved for heads of consumer electronics companies.

Dr. Han told the audience that OLED is the only technology that overcomes the limitations of conventional displays because it offers enhanced reality combined with dynamic form. OLED offers superior light and color expression because it is based on self-emitting light sources. Its flexibility and its transparent nature are the result of the development of innovative OLED materials. These essential attributes mean OLED can bring to reality what has only been imagined until now.


Dr. Han said that LG Display’s research development is focused on delivering value to customers that cannot be achieved with conventional displays. OLED displays can be used in a number of future applications from wearables and fashion to home furnishings and room designs.


Referred as “The Father of OLED,” Dr. Ching W. Tang, a professor at the University of Rochester in New York and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Design Award; and Udo Heider, Vice President of Merck, the global chemical and materials company, made appearances during the keynote presentation and stressed the possibilities that OLED offers of turning imagination into reality.

Dr. Ching W. Tang commented “Without backlight and other auxiliary layers, the OLED display is fundamentally less complicated compared to LCD, and in time less costly to manufacture. I have no doubt, given its advanced features and superior performance – foldable, wearable, flexible and transparent, OLED is the display technology for the next generation.”



In addition, Sir Ridley Scott, the acclaimed film director, said in a film segment of the keynote presentation that OLED TV is the first display technology that shows perfect black, which creates a sharp color contrast that fully delivers the picture quality that he envisions in making his movies. “I think this is a game-changer, and I’m happy to say that I would love to have all my films viewed on the revolutionary OLED TV,” he added.


Although LG Display has chosen a difficult path in pioneering OLED technology, Dr. Han said the company is proud in achieving the goal of making a display that realizes people’s imagination and dreams. He predicted that OLED has a bright future because of the convergence of different technology sectors, with the participation of outside partners benefiting from OLED’s growth.

LG Display presented several OLED prototypes at IFA keynote event. The company introduced a 111-inch “wave” double-sided display(Vertical Tiling OLED), made out of three attached 65-inch Ultra HD OLED displays.

LG Display also showed a 55-inch double-sided commercial display with a thickness of approximately 5.3mm, which is thinner than the latest smartphone, and weighing only 12 kilograms, making it suitable to be shown in a variety of locations.

In addition, the company presented a 55-inch “wallpaper” OLED display with a thickness of less than 1 millimeter that can instantly be attached to and removed from walls because of its magnetic backing.

LG Display to Invest US$ 908 million in 6th Generation OLED Panel Line for Flexible Displays.



LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it will invest KRW1.05 trillion (US$908 million) in a 6th Generation flexible OLED display production line as part of its efforts to lead the flexible OLED display market, which has emerged as an attractive new display market.

The new E5 Line is located at the Gumi Plant in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea, which will produce 7,500 input sheets per month using a 6thGeneration size substrate sheet of 1,500mm x 1,850mm. The new line is scheduled to start mass production in the first half of 2017.

The 6th Generation line is able to produce more than 200 cuts of a 5.5-inch product from a single substrate, which is nearly four times the production efficiency of a conventional 4.5th Generation line, which uses 730mm x 920mm substrate sheets.

LG Display’s investment will help pioneer future display technologies such as foldable displays and large-size auto displays. 

The main advantage of a flexible OLED display is the screen’s bending feature that is achieved by the use of a plastic substrate instead of a glass substrate as in a conventional OLED display. The use of the flexible OLED technology is now being expanded to smartphone, automotive and wearable device displays.

LG Display not only is creating differentiated competitiveness in the mobile display market by offering more design formats only possible through the flexible OLED, but is laying the foundation for the growth of flexible OLED displays by establishing a full-scale 6th Generation production plant that produces large sized panels. 

LG Display introduced the era of large-sized OLED panels with the world’s first 55-inch OLED TV panel in January 2013, followed by the introduction of the era of flexible OLED displays with the mass production of the world’s first plastic substrate-based 6-inch flexible OLED display for smartphones in October 2013 and the world’s first 1.3-inch circular flexible OLED display in September 2014.

LG Display aims to lead the flexible OLED market by offering customers differentiated value, with the accumulated technology skills from large-size OLED display production applied to flexible OLED displays.

According to IHS DisplaySearch, a global market research firm, the flexible OLED market is expected to soar from 2015, with sales increasing from $3.5 billion in 2015 to $4.8 billion by 2021.

In addition, LG Display signed a MOU on OLED investment and administrative support with the Gyeongbuk Province and Gumi City governments on July 23, with the company having been promised to receive administrative service support from the local authorities.

LG Display has invested approximately KRW 14 trillion in Gumi facilities since the start of mass production at P1 in 1995, including an investment of KRW3.7 trillion for the integration of the IT and mobile display facilities over three years starting from 2008, and KRW2.05 trillion for enhancing technology for small-medium size displays from 2012.

The additional investment of KRW1.05 trillion in the flexible OLED line is expected to create jobs and promote regional economic growth by creating synergies between the production of LCD and OLED displays.

LG Display Launches Lighter and Slimmer LCD Panels with Advanced In-Cell Touch Technology for Notebook PCs


LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it will start mass production of Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) panels for notebook PCs, which will make the devices drastically slimmer and lighter, in the second half of this year. 

The new Full HD LCD panel incorporating the ‘In-Cell’ touch function is an exclusive development by LG Display. The AIT is an advanced in-cell touch technology that employs a touch sensor embedded within the LCD panel, replacing the ‘add-on’ type that places the touch panel on top of the LCD. 

The panels with the AIT technology have earlier been introduced for smartphones such as LG G4. It is the first time the technology is being applied to larger size devices such as notebook PCs. 

The technology eliminates the space needed for a touch function cover glass, and as a result reduces the panel’s thickness by 1 millimeter (approximately 25 percent) and its weight by 200 grams (approximately 35 percent) compared to a conventional 15.6-inch touch-embedded panel with Full HD resolution. 

It also offers a brighter and clearer screen picture since there is no light loss or light reflection caused by the cover glass. In addition it features an excellent touch response and precise calibration of the touch point even with water drops on the screen. 

In response to enthusiastic customer feedback about the ultra-slim and light LCD panel for notebook PCs, LG Display has already agreed to supply 15.6-inch and 14-inch panels to several global notebook PC brands, and the company is engaged in active discussions with customers to supply different panel sizes. 

Expectations for LG Display’s new notebook PC panel are anticipated to soar since the industry is gearing up for the expansion of touch embedded products, especially with the launch in the second half of the year of the Window 10 operating system, which is optimized for touch functions. 

LG Display is also working on an AIT-based panel for pen touch functions. The pen touch function is particularly essential for consumers using two-in-one PCs that combine tablet and laptop functions, which involves writing with a pen while consumers hold the product. 

Mr. Byeong-Koo Kim, Vice President and Head of the IT/Mobile Development Group at LG Display, said, “The AIT technology is the most optimized and best solution to lead the touch embedded notebook PC market as it delivers excellent touch response as well as offering an ultra-slim and light design.” 

He added, “LG Display will continue to develop products that offer the best user experience, such as QHD high resolution panels and the pen touch function products.” 

According to market search firm IDC, 10 percent of global notebook PCs in 2014 were touch function embedded, and the market is expected to rapidly increase up to 20 percent in 2016 and 30 percent in 2019.

LG Display presents: The Realistic and Natural Color of LCD WCG.




Color gamut refers to the range of colors that a screen can display. Basically, a wider color gamut expresses more colors, and the more colors that are displayed, the more realistic the image will appear. 

Therefore, the color gamut is commonly used as an index for reproduction of high-resolution images. But what can be done to increase the color gamut? The answer to that question lies in various WCG (Wide Color Gamut) technologies that could increase the color gamut.

Various Efforts to Increase the Color Gamut

There are multiple methods of increasing the color gamut with WCG technology. The first method is through changing the color filter. This method entails controlling the width of the color filter or changing the RGB concentration, mix ratio and color type to create a broader color gamut.

The second method is to change the LED package to high-color package in order to display more colors by controlling the backlight unit. The third method is to install fluorescent quantum dot film to the backlight unit to increase the color gamut.


LG Electronics showed off their Wide Color LED TV and Quantum Dot TV with quantum dot film at CES and at the new product release conference in 2015. 

Both products stood out as displays with a higher color gamut and more natural colors than other products on the market. The Wide Color TV received the public recognition for superb performance.
