Q4 2017: Apple Watch sales surpassed entire Swiss Watch Industry exports. Series3 cellular, the star.

Apple shipped 8 million smartwatches in Q4 2017 taking over the Swiss Watch Industry exports that just shipped 6.8 million watch units.

However taking the full year numbers the Swiss Watch  Industry exported 24.2 million watches and Apple 18.4 million watches for calendar year 2017, meaning that still a lot of work to do.

Apple Watch shipments beat expectations, topping 18 million in 2017, up by more than 54% on 2016. The Series 3 was the key growth driver, as total shipments of the latest version of Apple’s Watch were just under 9 million, making up nearly half of all shipments in 2017.

Apple’s Q4 performance was impressive in itself, as shipments grew by more than 32% over Q4 2016 to 8 million, the highest ever number of shipments in a single quarter, not just for Apple, but for any wearable vendor.

“The cellular version of the Apple Watch was in strong demand in the US, Japan and Australia, where all major operators stocked it in time for the holiday season,” said Vincent Thielke, Research Analyst at Canalys. The Apple Watch Series 3 is the fastest-selling LTE wearable on the market, with shipments doubling quarter on quarter to reach 1.6 million.

“But limited operator selection in the UK, Germany and France influenced consumer purchase decisions, and stifled the growth potential of the connected Apple Watch. Moving into new markets, such as Singapore and Hong Kong in Q1 2018, just in time for Chinese New Year, is a good move,” added Thielke.

2015 Q2 : Apple shipped 4.2 million Apple Watch and becomes World`s Top wearable Vendor, says Canalys.

Analyst firm Canalys said that Apple shipped 4.2 million Apple Watch devices in Q2 2015, meaning that it “easily overtook Fitbit, Xiaomi and all the smart watch vendors, despite the Apple Watch’s significantly higher pricing”.
Apple is keeping its cards close to its chest with regard to Apple Watch sales and shipment information, stating that it does not want to give additional guidance to its rivals. It said that demand had exceeded supply “by a wide margin”, with hints that sales could have reached $1 billion during the quarter.
Using Canalys’ estimate of 4.2 million, and the base Apple Watch retail pricing of $349, would give revenue of at least $1.47 billion.
“The Apple Watch is the most sophisticated smart watch to date, and it has proved popular with Apple fans worldwide. But Apple and other vendors still face important challenges to make the smart watch a breakout hit,” said Chris Jones, VP and principal analyst for the firm.
“Improvements in performance, battery life and sensor integration are needed to make future models more attractive, but it is the quality of third-party apps that will determine whether the Apple Watch will be a long-term success,” he continued.

Press Release:
Media alert: Apple ships 4.2 million Watches in Q2 to become world’s top vendor of wearable bands.
Shanghai, Palo Alto, Singapore and Reading (UK) – Tuesday July 21, 2015
Apple became the world’s leading vendor of wearable bands in Q2 2015, according to Canalys estimates. With 4.2 million shipments, it easily overtook Fitbit, Xiaomi and all the smart watch vendors, despite the Apple Watch’s significantly higher pricing. Apple has done an excellent job designing its WatchKit SDK, which it delivered quickly and comprehensively. Native WatchKit extensions provide a capable developer platform without sacrificing battery life. But early sales were hindered due to two factors. Firstly, Apple missed the Q4 2014 holiday season. Secondly, supply constraints stalled shipments for the first couple months after launch.
‘The Apple Watch is the most sophisticated smart watch to date, and it has proved popular with Apple fans worldwide. But Apple and other vendors still face important challenges to make the smart watch a breakout hit. Improvements in performance, battery life and sensor integration are needed to make future models more attractive, but it is the quality of third-party apps that will determine whether the Apple Watch will be a long-term success,’ said Chris Jones, VP and Principal Analyst at Canalys.

South Korea: Apple Watch just launched. Sales reached 2.79 million through June more than Samsung six watches with 2 million sold since 2013..

U.S. tech giant Apple Inc. officially began sales of its first smartwatch in South Korea on Friday, heralding a fierce battle with Samsung Electronics Co. to gain the upper hand in the wearable market.

Along with six other countries, the Apple Watch is now available at online and offline shops in South Korea, roughly two months after it went on sale in major markets including the United States and China.

While the Apple Watch boasts similar key technologies as other wearables such as healthcare-related features, the device is unique in that it allows what it calls a "new kind of conversation," including sending a finger sketch to other users.

It does not, however, come with a separate universal subscriber identity module (USIM) card that allows it to make calls independently like Samsung's Gear S or LG Electronics Inc.'s LG Watch Urbane LTE, but must be linked to smartphones through Bluetooth within a 10-meter distance.

Unlike the United States, the U.S. firm's Apple Pay system is not yet available in South Korea.

The Apple Watch has been gathering strong popularity abroad, with industry tracker Slice Intelligence claiming its sales have reached 2.79 million units through June. It hovers far above the around 2-million sales boasted by Samsung's six wearable devices launched since 2013.

Samsung earlier said that it plans to release its first round-type smartwatch, but it is yet to provide a detailed launch schedule, thus giving Apple the upper ground in the local market for the wearable segment.
