Regional Overview

The U.S. market saw strong growth of 24.1% compared to a year ago. Echoing global trends, shipments of deskbased PCs continued to decline but were offset by a robust mobile PC market, with mobile PCs showing 49% growth.

“The positive results in the U.S. reflect a more optimistic economic environment in 2021 compared to 2020 when the market experienced multiple uncertainties due to the pandemic, as well as political and social unrest,” said Ms. Kitagawa.

HP once again secured the top spot in the U.S. PC market based on shipments with 27% market share. Dell closely followed with 26.6% of the U.S. PC market (see Table 2).

In the first quarter of 2021, the EMEA PC market was in line with worldwide growth trends, experiencing 30.9% year-over-year growth to 22.4 million units. The ongoing and, in some cases, increased lockdowns across multiple countries continued to fuel demand for notebooks and Chromebooks to support remote learning and consumer entertainment. Moreover, consumers are upgrading older systems to move beyond limitations such as short battery life, slower speeds and smaller screens.

The Asia Pacific PC market saw strong double-digit growth (37.6%) in the first quarter of 2021. While this figure is partially inflated due to a weak first quarter of 2020, healthy consumer demand and a rebound in desktops from business demands contributed to a strong market. In China specifically, the PC market experienced particularly high growth of 70% year-over-year.

LG to set up a new business unit in the US.

 

LG Electronics, a major home appliance maker in South Korea, on Thursday, said it will set up a new business unit in the United States to seek future growth opportunities.

LG's North American Innovation Center will be based in Silicon Valley, California, with the task of exploring new business opportunities and cooperating with leading tech firms there, the company said.

Rhee Sokwoo, who served as an associate director at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will head the center, it added.

In its latest reconfiguration of business units, LG also announced that it will establish a business incubation center to support various new business opportunities.

LG will also set up "CX Lab" that will be managed directly under the CEO to bolster design capability related to user experience. LG added its robot business center will be now managed under its business solutions unit.

Meanwhile, the electronics giant promoted a total of 56 executives in its annual personnel reshuffle, up from 49 last year.

The company named Lyu Jae-cheol, who has been leading its living appliance business, as new chief for its home appliance & air solution business division.

USA: Verizon to sell the LG V50 ThinQ 5G smartphone this Thursday. Press Release.

LG Electronics Inc. said today it plans to release its V50 ThinQ in the United States this week with Verizon, its second American telecom partner for the 5G smartphone.

The V50 arrived in the U.S. market last month to become Sprint's first 5G phone and will go on sale under Verizon's mobile plan starting Thursday, according to the Korean electronics firm.

The V50 uses U.S. tech giant Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 855 chipset and its X50 5G modem.

LG's first 5G smartphone received a positive response in South Korea, selling about 260,000 units in the first month since its launch on May 10, according to the company.

LG's 5G push comes as it has been stepping up efforts to expand its market share in the U.S., which stood at 15 percent last year.

USA: LG launching LG G6 agressive marketing campaign

LG Electronics will offer hands-on experience spaces and pre-order sales in a total of 25.000 stores in the USA, including major mobile retailers and large electronics store such as Best Buy.

LG Electronics plans to supply the LG G6 to 200 mobile operators in major global markets such as Europe, CIS, Middle East Africa, Asia and Central and South America.

The LG G6 is available now on Verizon and for pre-order on other major carriers who will delivery in April 28th.

USA: Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+. What are the plans, prices and offers from all major carriers?

Verizon’s plan is to release the Samsung Galaxy S8 under at least two plans. With their 2-year installment plan, a (recent smartphone) trade-in, plus Unlimited Data, users will pay $15 a month for 2 years for a total of $360 USD. Users can do the same thing without the phone trade-in for $30 a month for 2 years for a total of $720.

Verizon also has the Galaxy S8 Plus with the same plan (with trade-in) for $20 a month for a total of $480 USD. Without trade-in, that same deal will be $35 USD a month for 2 years for a total of $840. Verizon will also be selling a VR package which includes the new Gear VR headset (with controller) and a pair of Harmon Kardon headphones and a 256GB micro-SD card for a total of $99 USD.

AT&T’s sale of the Galaxy S8 will include one plan that costs $25 a month for 30 months for a total of $750. The Galaxy S8 will also be available with AT&T’s Frequent Upgrade plan for $31.25 a month for a total of $750. The Galaxy S8 Plus will cost $28.34 a month for 30 months for a total of $850, or $35.42 for 24 months and a total of $850 with the Frequent Upgrade plan.

T-Mobile will be selling the Galaxy S8 for a final retail price of $750. They’re doing so with a $30 down payment and cost $30/month for 24 months on the T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan. They’ll also be selling the Galaxy S8 Plus for a final retail price of $850 on a plan with $130 down and $30/month for 24 months on a Mobile Equipment Installation Plan.

T-Mobile’s deal is offering the devices on pre-order starting tonight at 9:01 PM Pacific Time online. Pre-orders from T-Mobile will get a free Gear VR with new controller and “Oculus content (a $180 value)”. T-Mobile “@Work” customers will get a DeX adaptor for free at launch when they pre-order.

MetroPCS is also getting in on the action early with a Galaxy S8. They’ll have the Galaxy S8 available for one cost – all up front – for $729 USD. MetroPCS customers will also get the Gear VR with controller for free when pre-ordering the Galaxy S8.

US Cellular will have the Galaxy S8 available for free. Not free without a qualifying trade-in, and this is only for new customers, but free is in there, nonetheless. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will be available on US Cellular starting at $40 per line per month for data for four lines, or $60 per month for a single line with Autopay and Paperless billing. Customers purchasing a Galaxy S8 from US Cellular between March 30th and April 20th will get a Gear VR and controller for free.

Pre-orders for most of these carriers – including the ones that have not announced details yet, exactly – are starting tonight.

April 21st is the general consensus for when the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will be shipping to carriers and customers.

Is Apple`s iPhone "Made in the USA" for real?

As you know  the Apple`s iPhone is thought, designed for the software as the well as the hardware in California but it is made in Taiwan by Foxconn Technology Group.

Foxconn has been seriously thinking to move its production to the US.

Apple asked both Foxconn and Pegatron, the two iPhone assemblers, in June to look into making iPhones in the U.S.," a source said. "Foxconn complied, while Pegatron declined to formulate such a plan due to cost concerns." 

 Chairman Terry Gou had been less enthusiastic due to an inevitable rise in production costs. 

"Making iPhones in the U.S. means the cost will more than double," the source said. 

The person added that one view among the Apple supply chain in Taiwan is that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump may push the Cupertino, California-based tech titan to make a certain number of iPhone components at home. 

According to research company IHS Markit, it costs about $225 for Apple to make an iPhone 7 with a 32GB memory, while the unsubsidized price for such a handset is $649. 

Apple, Foxconn and Pegatron all declined to comment.
