LTE Portugal: : Ericsson and Vodafone Implement FDD/TDD in Network.

Vodafone is implementing LTE FDD/TDD carrier aggregation in commercial network in Portugal, anticipating wider terminal availability later this year. This move will allow the operator to combine the best characteristics of LTE FDD and TDD modes.
Adding TDD to the already installed FDD network significantly enhances the total downlink data capacity and improves subscribers' mobile broadband experience. In addition, FDD/TDD carrier aggregation extends the app coverage of the TDD layer by up to 230 percent.
Greater capacity and coverage will be needed in the short term as mobile traffic demand is expected to grow nine times by 2020, according to Ericsson Mobility Report projections (June, 2015). With wider device support expected later this year, implementing converged carrier aggregation technology in live networks now means the operator will be able to hit the ground running when handsets are available.
Using only a software update to Ericsson baseband hardware already operating in the network, Ericsson's Networks Software 15B release enables simultaneous operation of LTE FDD and TDD.
Vodafone's current deployment for the trial in its commercial network in Portugal uses 15 MHz of band 3 (FDD 1800) and 20 MHz of band 38 (TDD 2600) and tests are supported by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon(TM) 810 processor with X10 LTE running in a device. The Snapdragon 810 processor with X10 LTE is a product of Qualcomm Technologies.

South Korean KT and Ericsson to develope IoT and 5G.

South Korea's telecom provider KT and Ericsson have agreed to strengthen their collaboration in the 5G evolution and to extend this to the Internet of Things (IoT). According to KT, operator is preparing to preview an innovative 5G communications services at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics.
Ericsson and KT have been working closely together to enable the Networked Society. They have successfully verified heterogeneous network carrier aggregation technology, a key element of 5G last year.
More recently, they have successfully demonstrated 5G Multipoint Connectivity with Distributed MIMO with 5G mobile device equipment installed in a moving vehicle. Multipoint Connectivity with Distributed MIMO with 5G enables the connection of a large number of small cells without interruption, and eliminates possible blind spots in coverage areas. This makes it possible to support gigabit-level wireless services like hologram video communication to moving vehicles.
The next generation of mobile networks, 5G is expected to be commercially available from 2020, but Ericsson already has live indoor and outdoor 5G test networks in Sweden and the US. KT will also start a 5G indoor and outdoor test bed at its R&D center this year in collaboration with Ericsson. The two companies will jointly develop and verify 5G mobile broadband access technologies in 5G candidate frequency bands, ultra-dense network operation technologies, and 5G core technologies and systems to provide gigabit-level data speeds and connectivity with ultra-low latency.
As an extension to their memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreed on at Mobile World Congress 2015 for collaboration on the next-generation networks, KT and Ericsson signed another MoU for collaboration in the area of the IoT.

LTE: Ericsson files patents suit against Apple in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands

Ericsson  has filed suits against Apple in Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. For more than two years Ericsson has been trying to reach an agreement with Apple on a global license for Ericsson's patents on terms that are fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND), but the companies have failed to reach an amicable resolution.
According to Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Ericsson, Apple continues to take benefit from Ericsson’s technology without having a valid license.
These patents refer to technology related to the 2G and 4G/LTE standards, as well as other technology that is not standardized, but is related to, for instance, the design of semiconductor components and non-cellular wireless communications.
Ericsson is confident that the matter will be resolved in the fair manner.

Ericsson and SK Telecom join forces on 5G research.

Ericsson and SK Telecom signed an MoU to jointly develop technologies that could form 5G standards.
The announcement follows a demo last week in which the Swedish vendor showed off pre-standard 5G to a group of senior executives from SK Telecom and NTT Docomo.
Next generation small cells, ultra wideband, low latency technology, converged FDD/TDD and Gigabyte-level data transmission all feature on the two companies’ wish list for 5G.
However both will continue to work together if additional technologies are found necessary for the next-generation standard, the duo said.
The aim is to stage a 5G demonstration at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.
Thomas Noren, Ericsson’s vice president and head of product area radio, said South Korea is leading on 4G, in terms of both technology and subscriber numbers. And SK Telecom is the country’s leading 4G operator, he said.
“They are early drivers of technology and we see them as an important partner in defining new opportunities, innovations and requirements for the continued evolution of LTE and towards 5G,” said Noren.
Ericsson is eager to take a leading role in 5G although CTO Ulf Ewaldsson acknowledged last week to Mobile World Live that the industry risks overhyping the technology.
At the wider level, the European Union struck an agreement last month with South Korea’s government , a sign of how Europe wants to tap into the Asian country’s mobile expertise.
The EU and South Korea will work together on defining what 5G actually means, as well as push for harmonised radio spectrum and global 5G standards to ensure interoperability.

Japan: NTT DOCOMO testing 5G technologies.

Japanese mobile giant NTT Docomo plans to conduct experimental trials of new high-bandwidth network technologies that could deliver up to 10 Gbps over a wireless link and connect millions of new devices to the mobile network. The hope is these new radio technologies could become part of the emerging 5G standard.

Docomo is working with network vendors Ericsson, Nokia, Alcatel-Lucent, Samsung, NEC and Fujitsu to conduct lab trials at the carrier’s R&D center in Yokosuka, followed by outdoor trials network year.
NTT Docomo is exploring a part of the electromagnetic band that has been previously deemed useless for mobile use: the vast swaths of wireless spectrum above 6 GHz.
By bringing together huge numbers of frequencies and using big antenna arrays to carriers could introduce reams of new capacity into their networks, but there’s also a question of whether they can use that capacity in truly mobile networks or just transmit it only to devices that stay put. Hopefully trials like NTT Docomo’s will help answer those questions.
To its credit, NTT Docomo was very careful to say these trials were just experiments to test the technology’s potential ahead of 5G’s formal standardization process. It plans to submit its findings to the mobile industry researchers starting in 2016. Docomo’s vendors aren’t being so careful, though. According to Ericsson, it’s just deploying a 5G network for the Japanese carrier.
The 5G term referred to this technology is a temporary reference, until what these experiments finally will bring out. At this time it is just a mere equation of speed.
