Telefonica reached agreement to buy an 11.1 per cent stake in the pay-TV unit of Italy’s Mediaset.

Telefonica reached agreement to buy an 11.1 per cent stake in the pay-TV unit of Italy’s Mediaset for €100 million, hot on the heels of an earlier media deal in its home market with the same partner.
In Italy, the Spanish operator said it will buy its minority stake in Mediaset Premium in the coming months.
That deal follows Telefonica’s agreement to purchase Mediaset’s 22 per cent stake in Spanish pay-TV player Distribuidora de Television (DTS) for €295 million.
The operator is now the complete owner of DTS, having agreed in early June to up its stake to 78 per cent with an agreement to buy a 56 per cent stake from Prisa for €750 million.
Telefonica wants exclusive access to content such as DTS’ so it can customise the quadplay packages it offers in competition with rivals such as Vodafone, which last week received EC approval for the purchase of cable TV operator Ono.
In Italy, the strategy is less clear. Mediaset’s own statement noted: “This partnership marks an important alliance between Mediaset and Telefonica for future cooperation in their respective pay TV activities in terms of technology, know-how and content.”
The Italian company is spinning off its pay-TV activities into a separate company with an equity value of €900 million.
Its aim is to bring in a series of international shareholders to develop content production and distribution activities.
A number of names have been circulated as possible investors. According to Reuters, deputy chairman Pier Silvio Berlusconi said last week Mediaset was in talks with Qatari-owned TV broadcaster Al Jazeera.
Another report in Corriere della Sera quoted Berlusconi as saying talks were ongoing with French group Vivendi.  Access to English-speaking markets was another objective Berlusconi said, as was Spanish ones. Telefonica has enabled Mediaset to reach that particular objective.

Back from the Future: Piaggio rewinds the scooter Vespa 946

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Back from the Future: Piaggio rewinds the  scooter Vespa 946.

Sixty-six years and 17 million vehicles after the Piaggio group decided to return to their origins to present an updated version of the first Vespa prototype presented in 1946.

The recently concluded Motorcycle Hall of Milan was the venue chosen by the Italian manufacturer for the world debut of this model, which combines the classic style of the iconic retro 'scooter' cutting with futuristic details.

In terms of structure, the first 946 incorporates a body made of steel and aluminum, which seeks to reduce the overall weight and thus optimize energy efficiency.

Also available is the new rear shock, which is now horizontal and not vertical, as it was in previous models. Moreover, the preload is adjustable in four positions, to adapt the response of the suspension to the different situations and improve the ride comfort.

Piaggio realizes that the 946 is known for its stability, which exceeds that of the great GTS, while its lightness and wide steering angle make it very agile, a quality he shares with the small LX. The seat is an important design element. With hinges placed on an aluminum support, leaves the air back. The upholstery is made from a fabric waterproof.

In terms of security, has disc brakes assisted by an antilock system. It also incorporates the innovative ASR traction control, which prevents the front wheel slip slightly adherent surfaces.

Techno(eco)logical milestones
Vespa Quarantasei (forty-six, the name refers to the year in which the first Vespa was manufactured) opens a window to the future in technology as well.

The beating heart of the Vespa Quarantasei is an extremely modern engine which unveils the development lines of motoring in the new future, characterised by low fuel consumption and decreased gas and sound emissions.

The single cylinder 125 cc 4 stroke, 3 valve, air cooled engine with electronic injection represents Piaggio Group's state of the art technology in scooter engines.

The new engine has been designed, developed and manufactured entirely in Pontedera, Piaggio's largest plant, which is one of the most advanced engine development and production centres in the world. This engine is born from the challenge that the Piaggio Group has taken on: to provide an increasingly more evolved customer with a product that guarantees performance, reliability and safety while also leading the field in respect for the environment.

An extremely modern engine.

The innovative 3 valve timing which characterises the Vespa Quarantasei engine allows optimisation of the load motion in the cylinder both in terms of tumble and swirl as well as optimal positioning of the spark plug, increasing combustion performance and at the same time guaranteeing optimum cooling of the parts inside the head.

For all of the bodies in motion bearings have been used in order to keep internal friction to a minimum: the timing rockers have a roller, all to the advantage of reducing noise and increasing mechanical efficiency, the camshaft is on bearings as well as the entire final drive.

The cooling system was carefully analysed, even through thermal fluid-dynamic simulations, in order to further improve performance, thereby obtaining significant reduction in terms of absorbed power and acoustics.

The injection system is state of the art for functionality and rideability, with automatic idle control and closed-loop titre management with a lambda probe. The three dimensional maps of advance, titre and injection timing are managed by a new generation control unit. Together with the trivalent catalytic converter, compliance with the Euro3 standard is more than guaranteed, even in anticipation of future standards which will be increasingly restrictive in terms of containment of polluting emissions.

Italy: Acer announces the agreement with Ducati

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Under this agreement Acer will become Official Partner of the glorious motorcycle company.

Just like in all teams that want to excel in sport competition, also in Ducati to achieve the objectives requires teamwork, commitment, continuity, flexibility and endurance while giving each individual its due value. And Acer, whose commitment to the world of sport, particularly in the motor world, is long standing and not fortuitous, bases its strength and continued growth on these same values.

Historical Italian brand, Ducati debuted in MotoGP in 2003, becoming quickly one of the most successful players. The similarities between Acer and Ducati Racing are deep. The passion for performance and excellence, total commitment and determination to achieve new goals, the willingness to open up new paths and to invest in innovation motivate both companies.

"Both Acer and Ducati have proved that teamwork and the spirit of competition can turn ambitious goals into concrete results," said Gianpiero Morbello, Corporate Vice President Marketing and Brand, Acer Group. "We decided to sign this important new partnership with the belief that the combination of the two brands will have a positive value for Acer, as well as to strengthen their commitment to the world of motorsport."

"The agreement with Acer for us represents an achievement of an important goal," commented Filippo Preziosi, Ducati Corse General Director. "Acer shall be a partner that not only is able to provide reliable and high performance systems, but also a great experience in the racing world. With this agreement we have achieved both goals, in the delicate project engineering work also in the demanding and dynamic activity of the track. "

The agreement of the initial term of two years covers the supply of hardware including Acer branded clients and Gateway servers. Thanks to Acer and Gateway's solutions, Ducati will benefit from the most modern and efficient systems for the 3D CAD for their engine's design; from systems based on high performance computing for fluid dynamics simulation, as well as high-performance mobile devices that deliver the power necessary for processing telemetry data analysis.

The partnership between two dynamic and innovative brands such as Acer and Ducati can only be beneficial and a source of excellence for both companies.
