Telefonica reached agreement to buy an 11.1 per cent stake in the pay-TV unit of Italy’s Mediaset.

Telefonica reached agreement to buy an 11.1 per cent stake in the pay-TV unit of Italy’s Mediaset for €100 million, hot on the heels of an earlier media deal in its home market with the same partner.
In Italy, the Spanish operator said it will buy its minority stake in Mediaset Premium in the coming months.
That deal follows Telefonica’s agreement to purchase Mediaset’s 22 per cent stake in Spanish pay-TV player Distribuidora de Television (DTS) for €295 million.
The operator is now the complete owner of DTS, having agreed in early June to up its stake to 78 per cent with an agreement to buy a 56 per cent stake from Prisa for €750 million.
Telefonica wants exclusive access to content such as DTS’ so it can customise the quadplay packages it offers in competition with rivals such as Vodafone, which last week received EC approval for the purchase of cable TV operator Ono.
In Italy, the strategy is less clear. Mediaset’s own statement noted: “This partnership marks an important alliance between Mediaset and Telefonica for future cooperation in their respective pay TV activities in terms of technology, know-how and content.”
The Italian company is spinning off its pay-TV activities into a separate company with an equity value of €900 million.
Its aim is to bring in a series of international shareholders to develop content production and distribution activities.
A number of names have been circulated as possible investors. According to Reuters, deputy chairman Pier Silvio Berlusconi said last week Mediaset was in talks with Qatari-owned TV broadcaster Al Jazeera.
Another report in Corriere della Sera quoted Berlusconi as saying talks were ongoing with French group Vivendi.  Access to English-speaking markets was another objective Berlusconi said, as was Spanish ones. Telefonica has enabled Mediaset to reach that particular objective.

Telefónica expands partnership with Samsung to become KNOX Reseller.

- Telefónica will become an authorised reseller of Samsung’s KNOX secure mobile platform to public sector and enterprise customers around the globe.

-Customers can create separate personal and work environments on their devices. Data held in the work environment is encrypted and sits behind password and fingerprint verification.

Telefonica and Samsung Electronics Co  Ltd today announced a partnership agreement to include Samsung KNOX in Telefonica’s portfolio of security services for enterprises. Telefónica will become an authorised reseller of Samsung KNOX licenses to public sector and enterprise customers around the globe.

The agreement will combine the expertise of Telefónica, in communication services and digital services, and Samsung, in cutting edge technology and a secure Android Platform, to provide a comprehensive mobile solution for work and play to organisations and their employees.

The agreement’s announcement follows the launch of KNOX 2.0 at Mobile World Congress in February 2014. The evolution of KNOX will enable employees to easily separate their work and personal lives on their mobile devices, while giving organisations enhanced security at all levels of the Android platform.
Telefónica’s enterprise customers will be able to enjoy the productivity benefits of using a ‘work phone’ wherever they are, without having to carry two separate devices. They will be able to create separate personal and work environments on their devices with encrypted work data protected by password and fingerprint verification.

The enhanced security capabilities of KNOX will be available to Telefonica’s enterprise customers on a wide range of the latest Samsung devices such as Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3 or Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition)

“This agreement reflects Telefónica’s commitment to provide innovative security solutions to its customers. With KNOX, we are now in a position to bring the best mobile security solution for our enterprise, MNC and Public Administration customers who are using Samsung´s devices”, says Oliver Martínez, Director of Security and eHealth services at Telefónica.

Rob Orr, Vice President of Enterprise Sales at Samsung Mobile Europe, said: “We are delighted to be working with Telefonica to offer secure mobile solutions to public sector and enterprise customers around the world. We are seeing a requirement in the market to combat security challenges and look forward to working with Telefonica to respond to the increasing convergence between consumer and enterprise technology.”

Samsung KNOX was introduced in 2013 as an enterprise-ready secure Android platform powering new Samsung Galaxy branded devices in the market. KNOX is designed from the ground up to systematically fortify Android by leveraging the hardware to provide the level of security required by customers. KNOX resolves the two major enterprise mobility concerns for customers–security and manageability – in addition to addressing the ability to seamlessly separate work and play.

M2M World Alliance Delivers First Multi-Operator Global Solution.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Alliance, which is comprised of  Etisalat, KPN, NTT DOCOMO, Rogers, SingTel, Telefónica, Telstra and VimpelCom, today officially unveiled its solution which aims to simplify and promote the adoption of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications worldwide.

The unique solution will leverage the operators’ combined global presence to the benefit of customers who are looking for a regional or global M2M deployment. It allows companies to enjoy connectivity throughout the Alliance coverage area with in-market rates. Additional benefits include easier compliance with local market regulations and the potential for multinationals to provide global technical support from a single market.

The name “M2M World Alliance” has recently been created to identify the group’s coordinated operations.  Its multi-coloured logo represents the Alliance’s aspiration to coordinate the delivery of M2M services globally.

“We believe that our unique and seamless solution will drive rapid growth in the adoption of M2M communications worldwide by giving our customers the ability to operate connected devices globally at a reduced cost,” said Ángel David García Barrio, Chairman of the M2M World Alliance. “With operations in more than 60 countries, the Alliance’s global footprint presents multinational organizations with a seamless approach to deploying connected devices in multiple countries at one time.”

M2M communications are used when machines – a broad term for equipment used in all sorts of industries, including consumer electronics, utilities, agriculture and construction – connect and exchange information with information technology infrastructure. It is considered by many as the latest stage in the internet’s evolution: when cyberspace reaches beyond the traditional confines of computers to connect to any device with a microprocessor.

Major growth areas identified by the M2M World Alliance for its global solution include connected cars, fleet management, smart meters, consumer electronics, game consoles, wearable electronics, telehealth and security solutions.

“The solution, articulated through the Alliance members, will offer the best services support, more optimized processes and a more contrasted experience. We are totally convinced, this innovative solution, will raise the interest of a considerable number of customers through a plethora of sectors.” Said Carlos Morales, Telefónica Global M2M Managing Director.

Global M2M connections will grow from approximately two billion today to reach 18 billion in 2022, according to a study by Machina Research, a London-based consulting firm focused on emerging opportunities with new forms of connected device.

Details of the Alliance’s products and coverage areas can be found on its new website, www.m2mworldalliance.com.
