There are no release notes available at this point, but it’s safe to assume that Skype version number 6.9.0.106 is supposed to fix bugs found in previous releases, while also improving performance in certain conditions.

This new version of Skype should work just fine, regardless of whether you are using the ancient Windows XP or the new Windows 8, but keep in mind that it’s only compatible with the desktop environment.

So in case you’re running Microsoft’s Windows 8 platform, Skype 6.9 can only be used on the desktop, as the Modern version of the app is yet to be updated.

Skype will be "in the box" with Windows 8.1.

In a blog post on August 15, Ryan Gavin -- the former Internet Explorer General Manager whose new title is General Manager of the newly created Microsoft Apps & Services unit -- confirmed Skype will be among the apps Microsoft ships as part of the Windows 8.1 package (for both Intel- and ARM-based devices).

Other appss in that group include Xbox Music, Video, Games, SkyDrive, Internet Explorer, Photos, Mail, the Bing AppEx apps (like Sports, Finance, Travel) and more.

"millions of people use Skype for iPhone or Skype for iPad each month." These users have requested features, and Microsoft has obliged with one of the most requested feature: Photo Sharing. They've also updated the apps for speed

"In addition, we've made some improvements to the performance of the app, as we know many of you want to keep Skype running on your mobile devices all the time." The new feature allows users to send photos that were taken with a user's iPad or iPhone directly to friends and family via Skype. There is no file-size limit.

Over the last couple of releases, we've started to improve the overall performance of Skype's mobile apps. The prior release began to make them less battery hungry when running in the background, so you can answer Skype calls throughout the day when they come in. And, as you'll be able to keep Skype open, you can respond to or send IMs to friends and colleagues all day long. In addition, this latest release improves the app start and the contact list loads even faster, so you can do all the things you love to do with Skype more quickly.

The updates are available in the Apple App Store. You can download the iPhone app here and the iPad app here. The new Skype for iPad update supports any version of the iPad. The new Skype for iPhone update supports the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4/4S, 3rd Generation iPod touch, or any version of the iPad. iOS 4.3 or higher is required regardless of device.

Skype readies software to support MS Windows 8

The latest new bits on the Windows front — introduced quietly on September 13 — is an update to Skype 5.5 for Windows that adds support for Windows 8. Microsoft rolled out a first Developer Preview test build of Windows 8 the week of September 12 and provided paid attendees of its Build conference with Samsung i5-based Windows 8 tablets.


It’s Skype 5.5.0.117 that adds the Windows 8 support. It is downloadable from the Skype Web site. 


Microsoft officials have said they plan to integrate Skype into a variety of Microsoft products, from Lync, to Xbox Live, to Windows Phone, if and when the $8.5 billion MS Skype acquisition is approved,

If stacking cards and HP Synergy weren't enough to get you to jump aboard the webOS 2.2 revolution, then maybe this evidence of the deep Skype integration will be - especially if you're a fan of free international calling.

Now, we know that other phone operating systems offer free Skype calling - but they don't offer them as seamlessly and effortlessly as webOS 2.2 on the HP Pre3 will do.

These leaked screenshots, gathered by the chaps over at the webOS blog, show that Skype will be embedded within the fabric of webOS 2.2, giving users the option to automatically route all of their international calls through the VoIP client - without even opening up a separate app.

So if you want to call your uncle Stavros is Greece, your auntie Shelia in Australia or your cousin Stereotype in any other country, you can simply hit dial and not worry that you're going to be charged a fortune by your network.

3G and Wi-Fi video calling also looks like being on board, and you'll even be able to check your Skype credit from the webOS menu.

It's a similar setup to Google Voice users in the States get with Android, but with over 500 million active Skype users - this could be a big deal breaker for webOS and HP's new handsets.

Skype founder Niklas Zennstrom has backed the VoIP firm’s acquisition by Microsoft, claiming that the US software giant will help push the service into new areas such as mobile and video. "Skype's full potential hasn't been realised yet," said Zennstrom in an interview with Reuters at the e-G8 Forum in Paris. "I think that Microsoft has a huge opportunity to integrate it into a lot of their different services. 

If they do a good job integrating Skype, the company can grow even more." Zennstrom would not be pressed on exactly how Microsoft should incorporate the service into its products, but Microsoft has previously indicated it will look to embed Skype in everything from Outlook to its Xbox Live gaming console.

It is less clear how the US firm intends to use Skype in relation to its Windows Phone platform, but Zennstrom noted that improvements in mobile networks and smartphones could help Skype evolve from its mainly PC-to-PC voice calling model today.

 "That is a huge opportunity that still has room to grow," he said.

Zennstrom founded Skype in 2003 (with partner Janus Friis) and was part of the consortium that bought it back from former parent eBay in 2009. Zennstrom is to sell his shares when the Microsoft deal closes, though Skype CEO Tony Bates is to become president of Microsoft’s new Skype Division, reporting directly to CEO Steve Ballmer.

  Reuters notes that Microsoft’s shares are down more than 6 percent since the deal was announced two weeks ago, mainly due to concerns that Microsoft overpaid for the business. The US$8.5 billion price tag made it the largest acquisition in Microsoft’s history.

(Nasdaq: “MSFT”) and Skype Global S.à r.l today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire Skype, the leading Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion in cash from the investor group led by Silver Lake. The agreement has been approved by the boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype.

The acquisition will increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications, bringing benefits to both consumers and enterprise users and generating significant new business and revenue opportunities. The combination will extend Skype’s world-class brand and the reach of its networked platform, while enhancing Microsoft’s existing portfolio of real-time communications products and services.

With 170 million connected users and over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in 2010, Skype has been a pioneer in creating rich, meaningful connections among friends, families and business colleagues globally. Microsoft has a long-standing focus and investment in real-time communications across its various platforms, including Lync (which saw 30 percent revenue growth in Q3), Outlook, Messenger, Hotmail and Xbox LIVE.

Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities. Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.

Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Ballmer.

Founded in 2003, Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009. Skype has made impressive progress over the past 18 months under Silver Lake’s leadership, increasing monthly calling minutes by 150 percent, developing new revenue streams and strategic partnerships, acquiring the intellectual property powering its peer-to-peer network, and recruiting an outstanding senior management team.

Other members of the selling investor group led by Silver Lake include eBay International AG, CPP Investment Board, Joltid Limited in partnership with Europlay Capital Advisors; and Andreessen Horowitz.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The parties hope to obtain all required regulatory clearances during the course of this calendar year.

Tomorrow Tuesday morning Microsoft and Skype will announce the $8.5 billion buy deal by Microsoft.

Is expected that after the deal Microsoft will launch all the windowsphone devices with a dedicated Skype application included.

Skype, which had been headed bumpily for an IPO until now, will apparently be integrated into Microsoft’s Windows Live and other online communications efforts in both the consumer and enterprise arenas.

Internet telephony service Skype S.a r.l. plans to start rolling out ads to consumer users this week in a bid to develop a new revenue stream ahead of the company's anticipated $1 billion initial public offering.

Skype's IPO could be one of the biggest in the technology sector since Google Inc. raised $1.67 billion in 2004, but while hundreds of millions of people around the world use Skype, some investors remain concerned about its ability to profit from its huge user base.

The Luxembourg-based company had an average of 145 million monthly connected users at the end of 2010, but only 8.8 million monthly paying users, according to Skype's recently filed amended S-1. Last year, it generated $860 million of net revenues and had a net loss of about $7 million.

The new display ads, which will initially feature advertisers such as Groupon, Universal Pictures and Visa Inc., will appear at the top of the service's main page in its Windows client, the company said in a blog post.

Skype said the ads, which will initially appear in the U.S., U.K. and Germany, may include audio or video. Advertisers can add a 'click to call" button in the ad and users will be able to share ads to their Facebook or Twitter accounts.

Skype said the ads would not interrupt users with annoying pop-up ads or flashy banner ads in the middle their conversations. Users will be able to close ads with the simple click of a button. Skype said it may experiment with other formats as well.

Skype has said its strategy is to continue developing free products while adding new paid products and promoting its subscription service to consumer users and large enterprise customers. The company said in its S-1 that advertising, gaming and the sale of virtual goods represent a "meaningful opportunity" to increase revenue.

Like other Internet services, Skype is luring advertisers with its ability to target users based on non-personally identifiable demographic data, such as a person's location, gender and age. The company warned that it may use this data for ad targeting, but noted that users may opt out of targeting.

Skype filed pre-IPO documents in August and was expected to go public in the first half of this year. But people familiar with the situation have said Skype's hiring of a new chief executive in October and uncertainties in the IPO market and economy have slowed the offering process.

Skype acquires Qik

Internet telephone service Skype said it acquired mobile video company Qik for an undisclosed amount.


Qik's service -- available on more than 200 mobile phones, including Android and Apple's iPhone -- lets users capture and share video across smartphones and the Internet, Skype said in a news release.


Skype, partly owned by Web retailer eBay Inc, is expecting to raise up to $1 billion in an initial public offering, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters in November.


Skype said the transaction to buy Redwood City, California-based Qik, with 60 employees, should be completed this month.

WASHINGTON — Skype and Facebook joined forces Thursday to let users of the popular Internet communications service chat with their friends on the booming social network.

The new Skype version 5.0 for Windows includes a Facebook tab and integrates Facebook's news feed and phonebook into Skype, the Luxembourg-based Skype said in a statement.

Skype users can call Facebook friends directly on mobile or landline phones, send SMS messages or make free Skype-to-Skype calls to Facebook friends who are also Skype users, it said.

They can also post status updates to Facebook that can be synched with Skype "mood" messages and comment on Facebook friends' updates and wall posts.

"We're working with companies such as Skype to make it easy to find your friends anytime you want to connect," said Ethan Beard, director of the Facebook Developer Network.

Skype on Thursday also added a new group video-calling feature and "automatic call recovery," which helps reconnect calls interrupted due to Internet connection problems.

Skype said video-calling accounted for approximately 40 percent of all Skype-to-Skype minutes in the first half of the year.

Skype, which was founded in 2003, bypasses the standard telephone network by channelling voice, video and text conversations over the Internet.

The company announced plans in August to raise up to 100 million dollars in shares by listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange.

Rumor: Facebook and Skype in talks for integration

Facebook and Skype are working on a deal that would integrate Facebook Connect with Skype accounts, AllThingsD has learnedciting sources familiar with the situation.

ATD has managed to get a hold of a screenshot showing the new features in action: once you connect Skype withFacebook, you’d be able to SMS, chat with or call your Facebook friends directly from Skype. You should also be able to login into Skype with your Facebook credentials.

The new features should go live in Skype 5.0 when the new version goes out of beta in a couple of weeks.

It’s a logical step for both companies. Facebook’s chat capabilities are somewhat limited compared toGoogle Talk, which is deeply integrated with Gmail, and offers voice and video chat capabilities. Enabling new ways to communicate with your Facebook friends is definitely one of Facebook’s goals. Skype, on the other hand, will be very happy to extend its user base with Facebook’s 500+ million users.

If the story turns out to be true, it would be interesting to see whether Facebook will also integrate Skype features into its web interface, or perhaps its mobile application.
