HP teases the ENVY x2 notebook/tablet with NFC tech.
HP is teasing a ENVYx2 two devices in one . Ultra mobile, ultra connected, Beats Audio, Ultra thin with sleek aluminun finish , with NFC technology to share with a tap to connect with other devices like never before. The device has a Windows version not detailed yet, but probably is Windows 8 not Windows RT. No more specifications at this time.
The Asus Ultrabook runs on the latest Ivy-bridge Intel Core processors and Nvidia GeForce GT 620M graphics with 1GB of GDDR5 video memory. The thin form-factor ultrabook features an optional full HD 1080p IPS panel with 350 cd/m2 brightness. It also has a 178-degree wide viewing angle design that is ideal for viewing movies, photos and playing games. The base screen on the Zenbook UX32VD offers a resolution of 1280x720.
The UX32VD comes equipped with a hard drive/SSD hybrid drive that uses the 32GB to make certain tasks quicker, like loading the operating system. The hard drives are available up to 500GB.

The new model stays true to the Zenbook design and includes an ergonomic inclined and backlit chiclet keyboard. The Ultrabook has a 2-second instant resume, with up to two weeks of standby in S3 mode and a claimed 200 days in S4 mode. The ultrabook supposedly lasts for around 7-hours of continuous usage .
Intel at CES 2012 has demonstrated a prototype ultrabook dubbed Nikiski (video below) that features a transparent touch pad panel allowing tablet-style operation. The advent of the Nikiski represents the first wave of what promises to be a deluge of tablet-style ultrabooks designed to stave off the inroads of Apple's iPad and other competing devices.
Ultrabooks represent the fastest-growing segment of the global PC market. IHS predicts global ultrabook shipments will soar to 29 million units in 2012, up from less than one million in 2011. By 2015, shipments will soar to 136 million and will represent 43% of global notebook shipments, up from 2% in 2011 and 13% in 2012.
"The Nikiski and similar hybrid products will help the PC market fight back against the media tablet onslaught," said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms research at IHS. "Consumers clearly love the convenience and ease of use of the tablet. So to offer a very thin-form-factor device that can be used as a tablet as well as a notebook represents a much more competitive proposition for PC makers.
With tablets eroding the growth of the notebook market, these types of devices are an issue of critical importance to the PC industry. Intel at CES commented that enabling exciting convertible and hybrid products like the Nikiski is job one for the company, showing how important tablet-style ultrabooks are to its future growth."
PC tablets like the Nikiski represent a rapidly expanding opportunity for computer makers. Using slate or convertible/hybrid form factors, PC tablets incorporate a full PC operating system such as Windows 7, Linux, or Mac OS. This contrasts with media tablets such as the iPad or Galaxy Tab from Samsung Electronics, which typically are slate-style devices that utilize a mobile operating system and employ a touch screen as the primary interface. Global shipments of PC-type tablets are set to rise by a factor of 15 in the coming years, reaching 45 million units by 2015, up from 3.1 million in 2011.
Dell's using a thin-bezeled display that allows the 13-inch display to fit in more of a typical 12-inch laptop case. At 2.9 pounds, the laptop is 0 .71 inches at its thickest point and 0.24 inches at its thinnest, making room for USB 3.0, USB 2.0, 3.5mm headphone, and MiniDisplay ports.
The $999 starting configuration has a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB SSD.
That package also includes the standard backlit keyboard and the 1366 x 768-resolution 13.3-inch display, which has been covered in Gorilla Glass.
Sadly, there isn't a higher resolution display option. Dell's also bragging about its implementation of Intel's Smart Connect technology, which automatically joins a network and updates your email or calendar.
Like the rest of the XPS line, the 13 has a solid aluminum cover, but the magnesium alloy palmrest is coated in a soft-touch material. The bottom, however, is made of a carbon fiber, that's been covered in a similar soft silicon.
The biggest oversight of this system may be the missing SD card slot.
HP could choose to unveil the new Spectre Ultrabook at next week's Consumer Electronics Show, where several other PC makers are expected to tout new ultrabooks.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) is likely to pioneer all branded notebook vendors to launch Intel's Ultrabook-concept notebooks, even ahead of the planned release of the UX21 Ultrabook by Asustek Computer slated for September, according to sources at Taiwan-based suppliers for parts and components.
HP is expected to launch two, or more, models of Ultrabooks initially, using Intel's Ultra-thin Core i7-2677M (1.8GHz) and i7-2637M (1.7GHz) dual-core CPUs, said the sources, noting that HP will outsource production to Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) initially.
Foxconn reportedly has begun shipping the Ultrabooks to HP. However, HP and Foxconn both declined to comment.
Asustek's UX21 Ultrabooks are expected to come in with displays in 11.6- and 13-inch sizes, said the sources. Asustek is outsourcing the production of the UX21 Ultrabooks to Pegatron Technology.
