Time Warner Cable is testing a WiMAX smartphone

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Time Warner Cable is testing a WiMAX smartphone, according sources with knowledge of the company's plans. A Time Warner spokesman confirmed that the company's product teams are working with unnamed vendors on future mobile products that would include a voice-calling component, but he declined to provide further details.

"Mobile voice over the 4G network is something we are evaluating at this time," said TWC spokesman Justin Venech. "But we don't have formal launch plans in place in regards to a mobile voice product."

The sources, who asked to remain anonymous, indicated the smartphone would work over both Clearwire's WiMAX network and Sprint Nextel's CDMA network. Sprint currently sells a number of dual-mode WiMAX/CDMA smartphones running Google's Android operating system.

(Clearwire announced last year it would offer WiMAX smartphones, but recently discontinued those plans as part of a reshuffling of its  retail business.)

TWC's smartphone efforts would put the company into direct competition with mobile voice carriers like AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless. Currently, TWC resells Clearwire's mobile WiMAX service--supplemented by roaming onto Sprint's EV-DO network--as a data-only offering; the company offers unlimited WiMAX and EV-DO data access for $49 per month.

Venech said TWC's first step into mobility involved data access. "Voice is the next logical step," he said.
TWC isn't the only cable company playing in wireless. TWC rival Comcast also resells to Clearwire's mobile WiMAX network in a data-only scenario. Separately, Cox Communications has put on hold the buildout of its own wireless network in favor of reselling voice and data service on Sprint's CDMA network through an MVNO model.

Indeed, this isn't TWC's first foray into voice calling services. The company was one of a handful of cable companies that offered voice and data services via Sprint's network through the now-defunct Pivot joint venture.

TWC's smartphone efforts come at an interesting time for the company--Time Warner Cable executives said in January that the company's wireless business has produced "not very impressive and pretty inconclusive" results. The company said it counted 15,000 WiMAX subscribers at the end of the fourth quarter.

Further, Bloomberg recently reported that TWC is negotiating with Harbinger Capital Partners-backed LightSquared to ink a wholesale LTE deal.

iPhone 5 not coming until October?

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Those who were expecting Apple to ship a follow-up to the iPhone 4 this summer may be in for a longer wait than usual.

A new report from Japanese Mac blog Macotakra says Apple is behind its usual schedule of ordering parts that go into the manufacturing process for the device. That change in pace could result in Apple shipping out a phone a few months later than the June time frame for the previous two models, and July for the iPhone 3G.

AppleInsider, which picked up on the report this morning, notes that the later timing would result in the next iPhone missing Apple's fiscal 2011, which concludes on Sep. 24 this year.

Along with the timing news, Macotakra's report, which is based on its sources in China, notes that Apple has still not committed to changing the materials used on the back of the iPhone from glass to metal. Rumors of such a change had first cropped up in March, with a follow-up report a few weeks later by 9to5Mac that said Apple was indeed testing out prototypes of future iphone designs with metal backs.

That move had originally been said to help set the device apart from the iPhone 4 since there were many other design similarities, as well as cut down on shattering incidents for dropped phones.

If the rumor proves to be true, it would likely be unwelcome news to those who had been banking on upgrading their phones this summer.

But with expectations that Apple now has to juggle both GSM and CDMA versions of the device, possibly implement a near-field communications chip (and the infrastructure that goes with it), as well as cook up the next major release of iOS, there are plenty of moving parts that can push back that time frame.

Spain: Telefonica launches Distrito corporate NFC trial

WorldWideTech & SCience. Francisco De Jesús.

Telefonica will launch an NFC trial involving employees at its Madrid headquarters. Dubbed 'Distrito NFC', the project will bring the NFC technology to a real corporate environment.

The project initially includes 1,000 Telefonica employees, who have been given NFC technology terminals to allow them to use their mobile phones for payment at retail outlets on the business campus and local establishments.

Trial participants can also access their work locations by bringing the terminal up to the entry turnstile, or load their "meal cheques" into the phone to pay for their meals and beverages at catering facilities on the complex, among other functions.

The number of participants in the initiative will be gradually increased as it develops, targeting all the staff at District C, approximately 14,000 employees. The partners providing the services for employees include Autogrill, Bankinter, BBVA, La Caixa and Visa.

The other firms assisting with the project are G&D, Oberthur, Samsung – supplying the NFC mobile terminals - and Sermepa.

Media Tablet Shipments in EMEA Are Expected to Reach 22 Million Units in 2011

WorldWideTech & SCience. Francisco De Jesús.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) EMEA Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, media tablets reached a shipment volume of close to 6 million units in EMEA in 2010, representing one third of worldwide sales. Driven by the unprecedented success of Apple's iPad, media tablets continue to drive major demand and a momentum that is likely to accelerate this year, with IDC projecting over 22 million tablets to be shipped in 2011 across the EMEA region.

Following the stellar uptake of Apple's iPad last year, with the vendor selling close to 5 million units in EMEA, and further market expansion expected this year in terms of product offering as all vendors bring their products to market, and with Apple just releasing the iPad 2, demand for media tablets is expected to be further boosted in 2011.

Adoption will continue unabated in Western Europe with continued uptake across all key countries, including the U.K., France, and Germany, and any other countries where the iPad and other products are available, while demand will also gradually increase in Central Eastern Europe and Middle East and Africa (CEMA) as products become available and add incremental volumes.

"IDC forecasts the EMEA media tablet market to more than triple in 2011 to reach 22 million units," said Eszter Morvay, research manager in IDC's EMEA Personal Computing group. "A plethora of new products is expected to hit the market in the coming months and will drive further buoyancy around the media tablet category and create an additional demand vacuum in the second half of 2011 for the back-to-school and next Christmas seasons."

Apple clearly dominated the market in 2010 with over 80% share and is expected to maintain leadership in 2011 overall. Introducing a unique product category and new user experience through effective touch screen and the iOS user interface, and bearing all the Apple hallmarks in terms of product design, branding, and technology, the iPad will continue to drive phenomenal traction. And the newly released iPad 2 will allow Apple to maintain an advantage over its competitors with an even sleeker design, while performance and speed have doubled and product availability will continue to expand across EMEA.

Competition, however, will increase as more products come to market. While most vendors were quick to develop and announce products, many opted to wait for the release of the new Android 3.0 Honeycomb version before introducing their products. As a result, Samsung was the only main competitor to Apple in the fourth quarter of 2010 (4Q10) with the 7in. Galaxy Tab.

Several other Asian and local European vendors, including Archos, Viewsonic, and Elonex, also went ahead and generated incremental volumes. With the arrival of the new Google Android operating system, however, IDC expects traditional PC vendors, including Acer and Asus, to make a strong push in the market, while Samsung will further expand by launching a new 10in. version of the Galaxy Tab. HP and RIM will come to market soon with their respective Web OS and BlackBerry OS, adding to the competitive environment.

"The introduction of media tablets in 2010 marks an important milestone in the mobile computing industry," said Karine Paoli, associate vice president, IDC EMEA Client Computing. "While tablet form factors have been on the market for some time, targeted at business users or niche segments, the emergence of new 'media tablets' initiated by Apple and the stellar success of the iPad introduced a new product category and new usage scenarios which will drive mobile device adoption and multi-equipment further and represents a major market expansion opportunity. User experience will, however, be key in customers' choice and while a fierce battle is expected between vendors, the battle will clearly also be placed around the OS."

While not expected in any way to replace traditional notebooks or smartphones, media tablets clearly offer a strong value proposition for more consumption-oriented usage. Instant access to the Internet and hundreds of apps, effective touch screen, and sleek design offer an enriched user experience and open new usage scenarios that will lead to their adoption as a strong secondary or tertiary device.

The consumer segment is expected to remain the primary target market for media tablets, but there is increasing interest from businesses. Some companies already see the potential of tablets as productivity and promotion tools for their sales force, and others could be looking at adopting tablets to address specific vertical needs. Several applications remain unaddressed by traditional computing devices, including traditional tablet PCs, and could well be addressed by a new generation of tablets.

While Windows compatibility could remain an important factor in the business space, and the reason why vendors also develop Windows-based tablet PCs, the opportunity will depend on the vendors' ability to meet business needs in terms of platforms and application, while support and management costs will also be key elements for IT decision makers.

From a channel perspective, broader product offerings and increasing customer uptake will also drive expansion in terms of route to markets. The retail channel accounted for the majority of sales in 2010, and will remain a key channel in 2011, but IDC expects the telco channel to increase its footprint in this category in the coming quarters.

Telco operators have so far been very cautious compared to when netbooks were launched, having learned from past experience, but media tablets represent a solid value proposition and a natural extension of their portfolio between smartphones and portable PCs. Carefully evaluating the right business model to drive mobile broadband service revenues, they will undoubtedly contribute to market development through subsidized offerings and fierce competition expected among operators.

Increased competition will lead to more aggressive pricing, and as vendors further ramp their production in 2012, media tablet ASPs are expected to fall significantly, which will fuel accelerated media tablet adoption as well as fast renewal rates, and support continued market expansion.

Media tablets clearly represent a major new opportunity and IDC expects the market to reach close to 60 million units by 2015 in the EMEA region. Driving new usage scenarios, tablets represent a third major value proposition between smartphones and portable PCs, and will help boost further overall device adoption and multi-equipment.

IDC's EMEA Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker includes quarterly shipment and forecast analysis by country across all key countries in EMEA, including vendor shares and market forecasts along with detailed market segmentation and product attributes such as operating system, connectivity, user segments, and channels.

World´s Backup Day. It is not too late yet.

WorldWideTech & SCience. Francisco De Jesús

Yesterday March 31st, 2011 was the world´s backup day but it is not too late to keep you out  of April´s fool. Here we post some recommendations:

Why should I back up ?

When a hard drive fails, if the data isn't backed up, it's gone. And it's not a question of if your hard drive will fail, it's when.

Many people visualize their computer as a single thing with a big part (like a toaster) when in fact it has a number of different components (like a car). Those components are: the motherboard, the processor (or CPU), the memory (or RAM), the power supply, the optical drives and the hard drive. The hard drive is the part of the computer where all your data is kept.

The hard drive is the component that has the highest likelihood of breaking unexpectedly, and it is the component that causes the most damage when it fails! If the processor fails, a new one can be switched out and the computer will be exactly the same as when you started. On the other hand, if the hard drive breaks, the data will most likely be unrecoverable, unless you're willing to spend an exorbitant amount of money on data recovery.

There are a number of ways a hard drive can fail. A head crash is exactly what it sounds like: when the read / write head (the "needle") crashes into the hard drive platter, ruining the drive. The actuator arm can break, so that the arm can't move around and read data. The electrical components inside can fail, the drive could become corrupted etc.

Hard drives do break. In fact, they fail at an annual rate of 3 percent: every year, 3 percent of new hard drives fail, and this rate gets higher as the drive gets older. With a three year-old hard drive, the annual failure rate is around six percent. And remember: when a hard drive fails, if the data isn't backed up, it's gone.

With a three year old drive, the annual failure rate is 6 percent. Now apply that to other situations. If there were a 6 percent chance of all your tax documents going up in a cloud of smoke if you didn't photocopy them, would you take the risk? Would you accept a 6 percent risk that your seatbelts catastrophically fail in a car accident?

Furthermore, the hard drive is the only part of the computer that can be damaged by software (without even physically touching the drive). Viruses, malware and accidental deletion can all damage the data on a hard drive. Though this data can sometimes be recovered, the easiest solution is to back up data on the drive before it becomes an issue.

And backing up data is simple, once you've familiarized yourself with how to do it. There are a number of different methods, depending on how much you want to back up and how long you want to keep it (we've listed the three most popular solutions in "How do I backup?").

A final point: Once a year is not frequent enough for backing up data. World Backup Day was created to spread awareness and to get those who have never backed up data to start. Once you learn how easy it is, you can do it anytime you want.
