WiMax: NewNet to acquire Nokia Siemens Networks WiMAX business.

NewNet Communication Technologies plans to acquire the former Motorola Solutions’ WiMAX business from Nokia Siemens Networks. Under the terms of the agreement, NewNet would acquire the complete WiMAX product portfolio, the related employees and assets, as well as active customer and supplier contracts.The companies expect to close before December 31, 2011.

“The addition of the WiMAX business would enhance the breadth of NewNet’s product portfolio, R&D capabilities, customer relationships and our overall market position in providing wireless infrastructure solutions to carriers on a global basis. We are thrilled at the prospect of welcoming a world-class group of WiMAX pioneers and thought leaders to the NewNet team,” said Ron Pyles, president and CEO of NewNet. 

As a part of the transaction the companies expect to transition approximately 300 globally deployed Nokia Siemens Networks employees to NewNet. Many of these employees are based in suburban Chicago, USA and Hangzhou, China. Nokia Siemens Networks and NewNet believe this acquisition would provide transferring employees with attractive professional growth opportunities in a solid, technologically advanced company that has an on-going focus within their core areas of expertise.

Sprint ordered $20 billion for 30.5 million iPhone 5 in an exclusive deal for the next 4 years.

Sprint ordered $20 billion for 30.5  iPhone 5 as an exclusive deal for the next 4 years.


BGR.com has been told that Sprint will be getting the iPhone 5 -- yes the real iPhone 5, not the iPhone 4S -- as an exclusive. And it will be a 4G WiMAX device. AT&T and Verizon will launch the iPhone 4S and get the iPhone 5 some time in the first quarter of next year as an LTE device. Globally, the iPhone 5 might be available as a 4G HSPA+ device.

In this scenario, the iPhone 4S Apple will introduce tomorrow will feature the following:
  • A low voltage Apple A5 CPU (it won’t be the same as the iPad 2 chip, clock for clock).
  • Updated front and back camera sensors. FaceTime HD in the front, 8-megapixel 1080p HD video recording in the back.
  • Multiband 3G Qualcomm chipset — North American & international bands for AT&T and global carriers, North American CDMA & international bands for Verizon and Sprint.
  • NFC support.
  • Metal or “premium” plastic on the back case.

LTE surpasses WiMAX for 4G kit spending.

Spending on LTE infrastructure equipment surpassed that of WiMAX for the first time in Q2 2011, according to a study by Infonetics Research.


Global spend on LTE equipment hit US$600 million during the period, while expenditure on WiMAX kit was slightly lower at US$500 million. Alcatel-Lucent edged out Ericsson in terms of LTE revenue share globally.

The company forecasts that spending on 4G infrastructure – both LTE and WiMAX – will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 46 per cent from 2010 and 2015.

The outlook does not appear all bleak for WiMAX though. "WiMAX continues its solid performance, finding growth from network expansions plus new niches in utility networks. Despite now being overtaken by LTE, as had been expected, UQ’s investment in [next-generation WiMAX technology] 802.16m shows there is an alternative 4G roadmap,” RIchard Webb, Infonetics Research's directing analyst for microwave and small cells, said.

The research found that sales of all mobile infrastructure kit was 25 percent higher in Q2 2011 than a year previously. This growth is still being led by GSM and W-CDMA technologies, but deployments of LTE and WiMAX are having an increasing impact.

"Although LTE and 4G continue to make the headlines, GSM was definitely the 2Q11 reality, with massive capacity upgrades in China and India. In addition, 2G and 3G network modernisation with multi-standard base transceiver stations (BTS) continues to be strong and will remain the main theme throughout the second half of 2011," said Stephane Teral, principal analyst for mobile infrastructure at Infonetics Research.

Looking to the future, Infonetics Research has forecast mobile infrastructure spending to total US$250 billion between 2011 and 2015.

Time Warner Cable is testing a WiMAX smartphone

Time Warner Cable is testing a WiMAX smartphone, according sources with knowledge of the company's plans. A Time Warner spokesman confirmed that the company's product teams are working with unnamed vendors on future mobile products that would include a voice-calling component, but he declined to provide further details.

"Mobile voice over the 4G network is something we are evaluating at this time," said TWC spokesman Justin Venech. "But we don't have formal launch plans in place in regards to a mobile voice product."

The sources, who asked to remain anonymous, indicated the smartphone would work over both Clearwire's WiMAX network and Sprint Nextel's CDMA network. Sprint currently sells a number of dual-mode WiMAX/CDMA smartphones running Google's Android operating system.

(Clearwire announced last year it would offer WiMAX smartphones, but recently discontinued those plans as part of a reshuffling of its  retail business.)

TWC's smartphone efforts would put the company into direct competition with mobile voice carriers like AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless. Currently, TWC resells Clearwire's mobile WiMAX service--supplemented by roaming onto Sprint's EV-DO network--as a data-only offering; the company offers unlimited WiMAX and EV-DO data access for $49 per month.

Venech said TWC's first step into mobility involved data access. "Voice is the next logical step," he said.
TWC isn't the only cable company playing in wireless. TWC rival Comcast also resells to Clearwire's mobile WiMAX network in a data-only scenario. Separately, Cox Communications has put on hold the buildout of its own wireless network in favor of reselling voice and data service on Sprint's CDMA network through an MVNO model.

Indeed, this isn't TWC's first foray into voice calling services. The company was one of a handful of cable companies that offered voice and data services via Sprint's network through the now-defunct Pivot joint venture.

TWC's smartphone efforts come at an interesting time for the company--Time Warner Cable executives said in January that the company's wireless business has produced "not very impressive and pretty inconclusive" results. The company said it counted 15,000 WiMAX subscribers at the end of the fourth quarter.

Further, Bloomberg recently reported that TWC is negotiating with Harbinger Capital Partners-backed LightSquared to ink a wholesale LTE deal.

UQ Japan deploys ZTE, Hitachi Wimax Pico base stations

Japanese Wimax operator UQ Communications has started deploying the Wimax Pico base stations developed by Chinese telecommunication equipment maker ZTE in collaboration with Hitachi, reports the China Tech News.

 The initial scale of this project will be over 1,200 base stations and the Wimax Pico base stations will gradually enter commercial use in the entire country of Japan.

The ZXMBW E9201 unit has been selected by Hitachi for this project and it can be used indoors and outdoors.

In addition, the device has low power consumption and green design features. It supports UL 64QAM and adopts data communication and anti-interference technologies such as MIMO, CSM and FFR to implement high-speed data communication.

Era de esperarse la nueva generación de pizarras pc (tablets )en explosión desde este año 2010 y en aumento especialmente este  mes de Diciembre 2010, ya ha comenzado a hacer sus estragos en el mercado mundial de computadores  de escritorio PC y en las notebooks y netbooks, tampoco dejarán de afectarse las laptops aunque my parecidas a las notebooks pero con una mayor capacidad en hardwares y tamaños de pantallas.

Qué tablets PC salieron en el 2010 hasta hoy, aquí un extracto de estas:

MobileDemand lanza el T7000 xTablet resistente Tablet PC que ejecuta un sistema operativo completo y características de Windows incluye un teclado numérico integrado, lector de código de barras, lector de tarjetas de crédito, etc

Apple presenta la iPad con el sistema operativo iOS.

Sistemas Quaduro presenta los 10 "Quadpad 3G Además, los primeros 900 gramos de Microsoft basado en Windows Tablet PC 3G con una batería de 8 horas.

Samsung presenta la  Galaxy Tab corriendo Android de Google.

Neofonie libera el WeTab, un tablet PC basado en la pizarra Meego, con una pantalla de 11.6 pulgadas multi-táctil con una resolución de 1366 × 768 píxeles.

Dixons plc al por menor presenta la Advent Vega, unt ablet  PC de 10 "comprimido con Android 2.2, que tiene un 1 GHz chipset NVIDIA Tegra, 512 Mb de RAM y ROM, cámara de 1.3 MP, WiFi b / g, Bluetooth 2.1, una micro ranura para tarjetas SD 
, un puerto USB y una batería de 16h para la reproducción de audio y 6.5h de vídeo de 1080p.

Dell anuncia la Duo Inspiron un híbrido con pantalla convertible a Netbook de Tablet PC


Las pizarras PC ya comenzaron a salir con mejores servicios en hardwares que la famosa ipad de Apple. Algunas con cámara web frontal video chat y cámara digital para fotos, mejores procesadores de más de 1GHz, algunas llegarán temprano en el 2011 hasta con procesadores dual-core y el software Flash Player de Adobe para ver videos en las páginas web.

Casi todas tienen puerto usb,  slot o espacio para insertar tarjetas de memoria SD y aumentar su capacidad de almacenamiento, con discos duros de gran capacidad.

Características que la iPad de Apple no tiene, por ahora y aparentemente la iPad2 si tendrá , por lo menos la cámara web frontal y la digital.

Sus tamaños de pantalla varían según la marca desde 5 , 7 , 10.1 y hasta 11.2 pulgadas, entre ellas la Dell Streak, iPad, Sansumg Galaxy Tab, RIM Blackberry Playbook , y se espera HP ahora propietaria de la marca Palm lanze su Palm Pad en el 2011 con su ya famoso sistema operativo WebOS el mejor del mundo para móviles. Aunque ya la RIM Blackberry Playbook le ha copiado su famoso multitareas y el swipe táctil sin necesidad de botones del webOS, por lo cual se espera una batalla legal entre HP y RIM , cuando RIM lanze oficialmente al mercado su Playbook por esas patentes, de propiedad de HP/Palm.

Aunque hay muchas marcas más que han salido antes que la arriba mencionadas, las más famosas son esas.

La pregunta importante es  ahora: Afectarán las tablets también a la demanda de los teléfonos inteligentes de gran desempeño, si  las tablets viene con todo lo que estos teléfonos tienen.

Un estudio de Gartner está proyectando un cambio en el comportamiento del mercado y piensan que el usuario pensará en adquirir un teléfono más sencillo que un teléfono inteligente (Smartphone)  para acompañar a su tablet de 7 pulgadas por ejemplo que ahora viene con todo lo necesario para su jornada diaria. Lo cierto es que el mundo de las comunicaciones que también está entrando a la nueva generación 4G LTE , permitirá en el 2011 el lanzamiento de las tablets 3G/4G para redes LTE y Wimax.  Estas redes permitirán la vista en vivo de videos (live streaming) entre diferentes dispositivos aptos para este tipo de actividades en vivo y a superiores velocidades que las redes de ahora sólo 3G.

Vemos entonces al 2011 como el año de grandes cambios en el aprovechamiento de nuevas tecnologías  y en las costumbres del consumidor, así como el lanzamiento de nuevas tablets PC de muchos otros nuevos competidores como ACER y ASUSTEK, LG, HTC  y muchos más.

Samsung Demos WiMAX 2 Supporting 330Mbps

Samsung Electronics and Japan's UQ Communications are demonstrating WiMAX 2 based on IEEE 802.16m with a speed of 330Mbps. Samsung's commercial Mobile WiMAX base station is being used for demo at CEATEC JAPAN 2010, in Tokyo, Japan.

UQ Communications and Samsung are showing Full-HD 3D videos and 16 Full-HD videos on 4 LFD (Large Format Display) TVs at the same time using it's WiMAX 2 trial systems and device.

Based on IEEE 802.16m standards, WiMAX 2  is expected to be finalized by November 2010. Samsung plans to introduce the first commercial solutions of WiMAX 2 in the end of 2011.

"We strongly believe WiMAX 2 will deliver even richer communication services to customers while unlocking a potential opportunity for service providers," says Mr. Woonsub Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of the Telecommunication Systems Business of Samsung Electronics.

RUMOR: Samsung Galaxy Tab (Tablet) coming to Sprint in November 2010

We have heard that Sprint is currently targeting a November release for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab tablet. Pricing for the CDMA device has not yet been disclosed to us. UPDATE: We’re also hearing it is a 3G/4G device!


The CDMA-equipped Samsung Galaxy Tab has so far been nothing more than a sticker in a random snapshot and some whispers about Verizon, but Boy Genius Report is saying that the Tab's also bound for Sprint's network this November, on both its 3G and 4G (i.e. WiMAX) network -- à la the Galaxy S / Epic 4G. No word from Sammy HQ on this one, but it's worth noting that in our briefing, a Samsung rep mentioned that an American carrier could put Qik on it and, well, that's kind of Sprint's thing.

Intel succumbs to evolution of 4G

Intel is facing a bitter blow as it becomes increasingly clear that future, fourth-generation high-speed mobile phone networks are going to be based on long term evolution (LTE) technology, rather than WiMax, the standard backed by the world’s largest chipmaker.
Over recent months, a number of network operators who supported WiMax have indicated they are making the switch to LTE. It is bad news for Intel, which has invested at least $1.2bn in supporting WiMax operators such as Clearwire in the US.

Last month, Dan Hesse, chief executive of Sprint Nextel, the third-largest mobile phone operator in the US, told the Financial Times that the company was considering using LTE for its networks.
Sprint had been one of the biggest supporters of WiMax, as the biggest investor in Clearwire, the mobile network operator building a WiMax network that will cover 120m people in the US by the end of the year.
Chart: Mobile broadband technology forecastIn India, a number of companies that won spectrum for 4G mobile broadband services in a recent auction have said they will use LTE rather than WiMax for their networks. These include Reliance Industries, owner of Infotel Broadband Services, the only company to have won a national allocation of spectrum.

In June, UK WiMax operator Freedom4, owned by the Daisy group, sold off its WiMax licences to a rival. In May, Yota, a Russian wireless network operator, which has rolled out a WiMax network with 600,000 users in five Russian cities, said its next network roll-outs would use the LTE standard.
Intel itself recently closed its WiMax program office in Taiwan, although it insists that this does not mean it is dropping the technology.

“I think many service providers are still going to look at WiMax as the best technology and I think WiMax absolutely has a lifespan that’s going to continue,” said Julie Coppernoll, Intel’s director of WiMax. “I do see LTE and WiMax coexisting; 10 years from now there will ideally be two technologies.”

Intel has pointed out that WiMax is already being deployed in 500 networks in 147 countries, and the technology is being embedded in a large number of new laptops and netbooks. Best Buy, the electronics retailer, for example, will bring out many more WiMax-enabled notebooks at the end of this year, Ms Coppernoll said.

“WiMax is here and it’s available now. We’ve never said it will be the only solution, we’ve said it will be a timely solution.”

Nevertheless, analysts said the company appeared to be backing away from the technology.
“Intel at one time was ‘WiMax, WiMax, WiMax!’. Now they’re more like – well, we’re going to end up supporting both technologies and there might be the potential for the two standards merging eventually,” said Jim McGregor, analyst at In-Stat, the research group.

The WiMax-LTE battle is the latest standards showdown in the technology world, much like the VHS-Betamax contest of the 1970s and 80s.

Analysts say neither standard offers any notable technological advantage over the other. Both offer fast data speeds – up to 10 megabits per second – which is faster than most UK consumers can get over a fixed-line internet connection at the moment.

WiMax has been a little earlier on to the market than LTE, and licences for the spectrum have tended to be less expensive.

However, LTE has been backed by the world’s largest telecoms equipment companies, including Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, and mobile broadband operators are keen to go with the technology with the biggest selection of devices to offer consumers.

“We are switching to LTE because most of the device makers, like Nokia, don’t support WiMax. The device ecosystem for LTE will be much bigger,” said Dennis Sverdlov, Yota’s chief executive.
“In terms of the underlying technology there is not a lot of difference between the two standards. LTE’s advantage comes from economies of scale,” said Phil Kendall, wireless analyst at Strategy Analytics, the research group.

Unlike Betamax, however, WiMax is unlikely to disappear altogether, analysts say.
“There is a big enough market for WiMax to survive. There is a role for it out there,” Mr Kendall said.
In emerging markets, where there is little telecoms infrastructure in the ground, it will continue to have a role as a cost-effective alternative to fixed wireless connections.

WiMax could also become a behind-the-scenes, wholesale support network for LTE telecoms operators, handling data in crowded hot-spots where network operators are struggling to handle demand.

The Financial Times rolled out with an article yesterday telling Intel that investing so much money in WiMAX was a mistake. It goes on to support LTE technology over WiMAX and reported older news on the numerous companies that are either ending their agreements with WiMAX or running test trials with LTE. It’s old news with the same, wrong approach to the situation. Towards the end of the article, there is intelligence displayed in mentioning that WiMAX is unlikely to disappear completely. There is no reference to the fact that there are different versions of LTE and some of them shouldn’t even be comparable to WiMAX.

   TD-LTE, the latest standard of LTE, operates on TDD, or time division duplexing, the same way that WiMAX does. This would mean that they would share a bandwidth and spectrum. TDD is superior to LTE’s previous usage of FDD, or frequency division duplexing, because TDD uses unpaired spectrum channels and is able to split up work from uplink to downlink. This is much better for data because uplink/downlink rates [of action] are not fixed. FDD is better for mobile operators because uplink/downlink occurs on a paired spectrum channel and voice is symmetric in both directions.

   Many companies, like Alvarion, use both TD-LTE and WiMAX because they run on the same spectrum and are therefore interchangeable in a way that both can be used by the same device. It would mean better 4G access for all companies that are smart enough to be using both technologies. Infrax just announced today th first upgradeable WiMAX/LTE base station. They seem to be getting at what most markets are looking for; people want the best everything and now they can get the best of both worlds. 

   The Financial Times failed to even point out the significance of 4G for non-mobile services. Clearwire, a popular WiMAX provider, isn’t even focusing their advertising campaign on wireless phones, rather they are trying to take control of offering coverage for all internet services, home and mobile. Clear doesn’t plan on disassociating themselves from the technology they were founded on. Rather, if they can improve their services they will, unlike the LTE snobs like the ones at the Financial Times who refuse to see the benefits of the “competition”.
