IFA2012: IBM and Vodafone advance Smarter Home initiative.

IBM  and Vodafone today announced a collaboration to combine mobile communications and cloud computing for the remote management of 'smart home' appliances.

At the IFA consumer electronics event in Berlin this week, Vodafone and IBM will demonstrate the mobile management of a washing machine and other smart home devices that are connected by Vodafone's Global M2M Platform running on IBM's newSmartCloud Service Delivery Platform.

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology makes home appliances more intelligent by connecting them wirelessly to the internet. This enables them to feed useful data back to the service provider or manufacturer to achieve a better customer experience through new functionality and enhanced services.

"The smart home market is now a reality and Vodafone is committed to delivering to it," said Marc Tastayre, Vodafone M2M Global Business Development Manager. "Security is the first important step for connecting devices to the internet and the collaboration between IBM and Vodafone is putting in place an open, efficient and scalable solution for the consumer electronics industry that will enable it to successfully progress the creation of the 'Internet of Things'.

IBM and Vodafone anticipate that this M2M initiative could allow consumers to use their smartphones for a variety of remote activities including viewing their home's utility consumption; controlling security, heating and lighting systems; and activating home appliances such as washing machines. Additionally the initiative will enable manufacturers and service providers to collect data from appliances that can be used to inform product development and maintenance and provide better services to consumers.

"This collaboration is a great example of how cloud computing can be used for business innovation versus solely for IT efficiency purposes," said IBM Telecommunications Industry General Manager Scott Stainken. "Cloud will increasingly be used in new ways that will provide enhanced consumer-centric experiences -- especially when combined with mobile communications."

The IBM SmartCloud Service Delivery Platform provides a fully integrated, scalable cloud-based platform to give manufacturers a cost-effective and scalable way to manage appliances and to rapidly introduce related new consumer services. Vodafone's Global M2M Platform offers appliance manufacturers the ability to easily and rapidly deploy managed and secure wireless connectivity to home gateways. By combining the platforms, the two companies will also provide the consumer electronics industry with an example of a truly global, open standards-based approach for Smarter Home connectivity and solutions.

Samsung you should try webOS Open source with thousands of HP(Palm) patents.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung you should try webOS Open source with thousands of HP(Palm) patents.

At this time Apple wants Samsung against the wall, at least in the USA, and went this last Friday with all the caballeria (cavalry) asking the US Court in California to ban the most recent Samsung mobile devices Galaxy S III, Verizon Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy Note 10.1.

Apple thinks they own all the features you can do with the multitouch way to perform any mobile in anyway.

But there are a lot of Palm Inc patents now owned by HP including webOS patents, that Samsung and all OEM`s should check them out.

Just go Google here make a search Palm Inc patents and you will see all the way thousands of them.

Besides, I think HP should make all the efforts to asure all OEM`s manufacturers worldwide that webOS opensource is others patents proof in order to avoid future lawsuits at all and before launching webOS Opensource 1.0 in September.

One of the Palm Inc patents (link below ) I like is related to unfolding mobiles and you Samsung have the flexible displays ready to be incorporated in new mobiles. I believe that is one of the Trends for the late 2012 and 2013. There is no flexible/unfoldable mobile officialy unveiled for any OEM`s at this time yet, only concepts.

In this month HP will launch the final version of webOS Open 1.0, now available in Beta.

Our related post can help you, as well:

Trends 2013: Products with flexible/unfold displays: small batteries with more power. Who will be the first to launch?

HP Open webOS goes Beta. In September to announce future plans.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

The webOS Open source roadmap tasks for August are on track. The Beta release is out. And promises for September to reveal the future plans when the final task is accomplished, webOS Open source version 1.0
.
All the goodies about the August Open webOS beta release, directly from webOS open source project blog, after the break.

Open webOS August Edition
Eight months ago we announced our ambitious plan to make webOS available under an open source license and bring the innovation of the webOS platform to the open source community. We are proud to have hit another milestone with today’s Beta release.
We delivered on our promise
It has taken a lot of hard work, long hours and weekend sacrifices by our engineering team to deliver on our promise and we have accomplished this goal.
The Beta release is comprised of 54 webOS components available as opensource. This brings over 450,000 lines of code released under the Apache 2.0 license, which is one of the most liberal and accepted in the open source community.
Ideal environment for developers
Today’s release provides— not one— but two build environments.
Our desktop build provides the ideal development environment for enhancing the webOS user experience with new features and integrating state of the art open source technologies. Developers can now use all their desktop tools on powerful development machines.
Our OpenEmbedded build provides the ideal development environment for porting webOS to new and exciting devices.
New build & Desktop functionality
OpenEmbedded was a natural choice for many reasons:
  • Its widespread community adoption
  • Excellent cross-compiling support for embedded platforms
  • And support for multiple hardware architectures
The build provides an ARM emulator, running core services such as db8 and node.js.We are actively converging on an OE Core image which boots to System Manager and the full webOS experience.
The desktop build brings together all of the elements released so far on the Ubuntu desktop. Our upleveled System Manager now has support for applications, including the Core Applications such as Calendar and Contacts, with their underlying Synergy services. What’s more, many 3rd party Enyo apps are supported too.
Community: Getting involved
No Beta release would be complete without a full complement of ways for the community to contribute and engage with us.  Come join the community to discuss porting, features and fixes on our mailing lists. You can also submit and track bugs and feature requests in our public Jira system.
Finally, you spoke, and we listened. We have enlisted feedback from the community and have selected an approach to contributions inspired by the popular Linux Certificate of Origin.
Community activity
Great collaboration continues on the Community Edition with the release of LunaCE. The webOS-Ports team have combined the community efforts into one package and made it simple to install on to TouchPad devices through their Preware software.
The latest release brings a host of new features including new Gestures and Card Stack Tabs.
As we work with the community to deliver innovation to the webOS platform, we will highlight and promote the most innovative and noteworthy contributions. Let us know of your breakthroughs and where you might need help. We have the specialists to assist.
Be part of our growth
We are continuing our hiring drive. Some great people have come on board and we are looking to add even more. Head on over to our jobs page for a full list of open positions.
Stay tuned for more updates from us, with the September release we will announce our future plans for Open webOS.
Show me the money!
So what does it look like? Below is a screen shot of the Open webOS Beta running on a Ubuntu desktop. The screen shot shows the iconic card view of the system running multiple applications.
Open webOS running on Ubuntu desktop
The excitement continues to build as we approach 1.0 and beyond. Looking forward to hearing from and seeing you online in the community.

USA: Smartphones consumers supporting Samsung Galaxy SIII, the device is sold out around the country.

According to PC World a survey of 16 retailers conducted by Trip Chowdhry, the managing director for equity research at Global Equities, two Costco stores were sold out of Galaxy S III phones that run on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks, another sold out all its AT&T models and two out of three Sprint stores were sold out.
Three Verizon stores still had the smartphone, Chowdhry said, but the retailers reported that the Samsung device had been outselling the iPhone during the month.
All five AT&T stores polled said they saw "significant" sales of Samsung’s device in the first few days after the verdict.
Asked by PCWorld why a verdict favoring Apple was sparking sales for Samsung, Chowdhry replied: "The Samsung Galaxy S III is a very good and popular phone. People probably thought they may not be able to buy it in the future following the jury verdict."

Customers appear to have rushed out to buy the Galaxy S III, with some stores running out of stock of the smartphone, according to a report from Global Equities Research.
