Other configurations of the LG Experience display also are planned for leading regional retailers. The LG Experience is designed to help TV shoppers better understand emerging technologies including HDR and 4K Ultra HD on today's most advanced OLED and LED 4K UHD TVs:

HDR Done Right
HDR – high dynamic range – is an exciting new content format that delivers consumers brilliant brights, darker darks, and a wider palette of colors, to reproduce images that are true to life. HDR is hailed as one of the biggest enhancements to TV picture quality since the advent of HDTV.

LG OLED TV and LG SUPER UHD TV™ are the first to deliver HDR in both available formats – HDR10 and Dolby Vision – and enable consumers to access all the HDR content available today, and have the peace of mind that their TV will handle new content to come. Blockbuster movies and TV series in HDR are already available via streaming content providers and 4K Blu-ray – and plans for expanded HDR content, including Dolby Vision HDR formatted content have already been announced.* Choosing a TV with both HDR formats helps consumers avoid the risk of missing out on future content and enjoy a full HDR experience.
Personalized Shopping Experience
Beyond the product demonstrations, the LG Experience serves as a showcase for immersive visual content. Engaging, eye-popping 4K resolution videos reinforce OLED and LG SUPER UHD TV's lifelike picture quality and serve as a vehicle for interactive and engaging demos to educate consumers on the benefits of HDR technology. Consumers can enjoy an interactive, hands-on experience of LG's webOS 3.0 Smart TV platform that makes switching between live TV, streaming content, and external players easy and fast.

"With the LG Experience, customers can be hands-on and learn about the newest technology," said Luke Motschenbacher, vice president for televisions at Best Buy, national rollout partner for the LG Experience. "It's a perfect example of why Best Buy's the best place to experience the latest TVs."

2Q 2016: WorldWide PC market share: Lenovo 21.2%, HP Inc 20.8%, Dell 16%. USA market: HP Inc 27.9%, Dell 25.8%

Worldwide PC shipments totaled 62.4 million units in the second quarter of 2016 (2Q16), a year-on-year decline of 4.5%, beating the forecast of -7.4% by roughly 3%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. The United States market performed best, reflecting the strength of the U.S. dollar and relative market stability.

Improvement in channel inventories appears to have contributed to the stronger results, along with an easier year-on-year comparison and easing of component supply. Unfortunately, these types of supply-side drivers don't necessarily reflect a change in consumer purchases. Even PC channels remain fairly cautious following challenges over the past year, so the results are not likely to raise the forecast.

Nevertheless, improved inventory levels put the market on a better footing for the second half of the year, and the expiration of free Windows 10 upgrades may transition some users into buying new systems rather than updating older ones. Commercial evaluations of Windows 10 remain healthy and a near-term driver that could also be contributing to the relative strength in U.S. shipments.

"The PC market continues to struggle as we wait for replacements to accelerate, along with some return of spending from phones, tablets, and other IT," said Loren Loverde, vice president, Worldwide PC Trackers & Forecasting. "Our long-term outlook remains cautions. However, the strong results in the U.S. offer a glimpse of what the market could look like with pockets of growth and a stronger overall environment. It's not dramatic growth, but it could push the market into positive territory slightly ahead of our forecast for 2018."

"As expected, the start of the peak education buying season helped generate large Chromebook shipment volumes in the U.S.," stated Linn Huang, research director, Devices & Displays. "A somewhat unexpected boost came from intensified inventory pull-in as cautious channel players, who had been working to pare down inventory over the last several quarters, opened up inventory constraints a bit. This was likely a one-time shipment boost to bring aggregate inventory levels back to market equilibrium. The larger story remains whether an early wave of enterprise transition to Windows 10 could help close out a 2016 that is increasingly looking stronger in the U.S."

In Europe, market sentiment remained muted. "Even the best case scenario calls for PCs to face significant challenges, with a somewhat fragile stabilization in the long run. The preliminary results did not capture the potential repercussions from the Brexit vote, which is expected to affect the timing and scope of spending plans in Europe," said Jay Chou, research manager, IDC Worldwide PC Tracker, "IDC continues to monitor the evolving situation closely. The better than expected 2Q16 results should not be interpreted as a harbinger of significant improvements for PCs."

Regional Highlights
United States – The U.S. market saw a healthy jump in growth in the second quarter of 2016. HP Inc. and Dell continued to vie for leadership of the U.S. market, with HP Inc. recovering the title in 2Q16.

Lenovo and Acer also saw strong growth, actually outpacing the market leaders but with much smaller share. Despite uncertainty in various parts of the market, the competitive environment, strength of the U.S. compared to other markets, strong gains in Chrome shipments, and a relatively easy comparison to year-ago shipments contributed to year-on-year growth of almost 5%.

Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) – In the EMEA region results are expected to be in line with forecast. Mobility needs continued to push interest towards notebooks, which supported overall volumes.

This is the first recent quarter of comparison that was not impacted by Bing promotions (that inflated shipments through Q1 2015). As a result, 2Q16 shipments represent a more normalized growth trend – still confirming long-term market erosion for traditional PCs, but showing hints of short-term stabilization. Currency fluctuations in the EMEA region, localized political developments in Western Europe, and ongoing instabilities in the Middle East are also constraining shipment growth.

Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) – The APeJ PC market witnessed a decline in line with expectations. Weakness in consumer demand continued in most countries across the region: Ramadhan observance affected consumer spending, while high inventory inhibited new shipments. Also, a number of commercial projects in India, Thailand, and the Philippines have been postponed until the next quarter.

Japan – The market performed better than forecast and posted solid year-on-year growth. However, a slowing economic outlook, weaker Yen, and sluggish consumer spending further dampened demand.

Vendor Highlights
Lenovo remained the worldwide PC market leader, and continued its strong growth in the U.S. market. However, shipments in other markets continued to decline, pulling down overall growth. Lenovo's lead in the share of total PC shipments shrunk over the past year from 1.8% a year ago to 0.4% this quarter. Nevertheless, the margin of leadership has fluctuated since Lenovo took the lead in 2013. Q2 2015 marked the largest lead Lenovo has ever held, and the company boosted its overall share to a peak of 21.7% in Q4 2015.

HP Inc. had a solid quarter, with growth returning to positive territory after a year of declines. The U.S. led regional growth with a gain of 11.5% from last year as the company rebounded from a couple of soft quarters, but other regions also saw growth in positive territory.

Dell also had a productive quarter, with worldwide growth recovering to over 4%. Dell managed a strong recovery in Japan, while also driving solid growth in the United States, although EMEA continued to drag on overall results.

ASUS also saw growth recover in 2Q16, benefitting from an easier year-on-year comparison. The vendor pulled just ahead of Apple for the number 4 spot in overall PC shipments.

Apple continues to face an increasingly competitive market as it awaits a refresh of its PC lineup. As a result, shipments experienced a decline from last year.

Table Notes:
  • Some IDC estimates prior to financial earnings reports.
  • Shipments include shipments to distribution channels or end users. OEM sales are counted under the vendor/brand under which they are sold.
  • PCs include Desktops, Portables, Ultraslim Notebooks, Chromebooks, and Workstations and do not include handhelds, x86 Servers and Tablets (i.e. iPad, or Tablets with detachable keyboards running either Chrome, Windows or Android). Data for all vendors are reported for calendar periods.

IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC T racker gathers PC market data in over 80 countries by vendor, form factor, brand, processor brand and speed, sales channel and user segment. The research includes historical and forecast trend analysis as well as price band and installed base data.

2H 2016: Qualcomm`s SnapDragon 821 coming with smartphones this fall.

Press Release:

Since the beginning of the year, when the first Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 powered smartphones were announced, the 820 processor has been a leader in the mobile industry with over 115 premium smartphone and tablet device deployments, supporting the latest in cutting-edge mobile applications, and helping create more immersive user experiences while also being deployed in new and innovative ways, like supporting safer driving and navigation in cars.

One of the main reasons the 820 processor has been so successful in so many designs is because it introduced multiple new technologies, all tightly integrated and power optimized, designed to bring user experience innovation to the mobile industry.

But the innovation doesn’t stop there.

This week, Qualcomm Technologies is announcing a follow-up to the successful Snapdragon 820 processor: the Snapdragon 821.

Building on the technology leadership introduced with the Snapdragon 820 platform, the 821 is engineered to deliver faster speed, improved power savings, and greater application performance, ensuring 821 powered devices keep pace with the growing performance demands of users to deliver the unmatched user experiences the Snapdragon 800 tier is known for.

The Snapdragon 821 is engineered to deliver a 10% performance increase over the 820 with the Qualcomm Kryo quad-core CPU, reaching speeds up to 2.4GHz. Why would you introduce something to replace what many consider the best mobile processor available today? Simple, we’re not. Rather than replace the Snapdragon 820, the 821 is designed to complement and extend the competitive strengths of our Snapdragon 800 lineup.

The Snapdragon 820 introduced a number of highly optimized and custom-designed core technologies and established an early and clear leadership position in premium tier mobile computing. Consider, for example, the X12 LTE modem. It is in a class of its own, designed to support download speeds up- to 600 Mbps, LTE uploads up-to 3x as fast with Snapdragon Upload+, vastly improved call quality and reliability with Ultra HD Voice, all tightly integrated to deliver wide areas connectivity to Snapdragon 820 to devices worldwide.

The Snapdragon 820 currently powers some of the most advanced, feature rich smartphones today, including the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, Xiaomi Mi5, LG G5, HTC 10, LeEco LeMax 2, and Sony Xperia X. And because the Snapdragon 820 helped improve the user experience for mobile imaging, virtual reality, battery life, and connectivity speed and reliability, all the updates we’ve included in Snapdragon 821 will help keep devices powered by Snapdragon 800 premium-tier processors at the top of people’s shopping lists into the foreseeable future.

We’re excited to tell you more about just how the Snapdragon 821 will help set a new bar for smartphones, tablets, mobile VR head mounted displays and other new devices. You can expect commercial devices powered by the 821 in the second half of 2016. Stay tuned for more information on the Snapdragon 821 coming soon.

Qualcomm Snapdragon, Qualcomm Kryo, Qualcomm Adreno, and Qualcomm Spectra are products of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Samsung Introduces World’s First Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Removable Memory Card Line-up for DSLRs, 3D VR cameras, action cams and drones.

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, today unveiled the industry’s first removable memory cards based on the JEDEC Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 1.0 Card Extension Standard*, for use in high-resolution mobile shooting devices such as DSLRs, 3D VR cameras, action cams and drones. Coming in a wide range of storage capacities including 256, 128, 64 and 32 gigabyte (GB), Samsung’s UFS cards are expected to bring a significant performance boost to the external memory storage market, allowing much more satisfying multimedia experiences.

“Our new 256GB UFS card will provide an ideal user experience for digitally-minded consumers and lead the industry in establishing the most competitive memory card solution,” said Jung-bae Lee, senior vice president, Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering, Samsung Electronics “By launching our new high-capacity, high-performance UFS card line-up, we are changing the growth paradigm of the memory card market to prioritize performance and user convenience above all.”

Samsung’s new 256GB UFS removable memory card ─ simply referred to as the UFS card will provide greatly improved user experiences, especially in high-resolution 3D gaming and high-resolution movie playback. It provides more than five times faster sequential read performance compared to that of a typical microSD card, reading sequentially at 530 megabytes per second (MB/s) which is similar to the sequential read speed of the most widely used SATA SSDs. With this UFS card, consumers have the ability to read a 5GB, Full-HD movie in approximately 10 seconds, compared to a typical UHS-1 microSD card, which would take over 50 seconds with 95MB/s of sequential reading speed. Also, at a random read rate of 40,000 IOPS, the 256GB card delivers more than 20 times higher random read performance compared to a typical microSD, which offers approximately 1,800 IOPS.

When it comes to writing, the new 256GB UFS card processes 35,000 random IOPS, which is 350 times higher than the 100 IOPs of a typical microSD card, and attains a 170MB/s sequential write speed, almost doubling the top-end microSD card speed. With these substantial performance improvements, the new 256GB UFS card significantly reduces multimedia data downloading time, photo thumbnail loading time and buffer clearing time in burst shooting mode, which, collectively, can be particularly beneficial to DSLR camera users. To shoot 24 large/extra fine JPEG photographs (1,120 megabyte (MB)-equivalent) continuously with a high-end DSLR camera, the 256GB UFS card takes less than seven seconds, compared to a UHS-1 microSD card which typically takes about 32 seconds, at 35MB/s.

To achieve the highest performance and most power-efficient data transport, the UFS card supports multiple commands with command queuing features and enables simultaneous reading and writing through the use of separately dedicated paths, doubling throughput.

As the leading memory storage provider, Samsung has been aggressive in preparing UFS solutions for the marketplace, while contributing to JEDEC standardization of the Universal Flash Storage 2.0 specification in September 2013 and the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 1.0 Card Extension standard in March 2016. Following its introduction of the industry-first 128GB embedded UFS chip in January 2015, the company successfully launched a 256GB embedded UFS memory for high-end mobile devices in February of this year. As of earlier this month, Samsung also completed the Universal Flash Storage Association** (UFSA)’s certification program that evaluates electrical and functional specifications for compatibility of a UFS card, and Samsung’s new UFS card products were approved as UFSA-certified UFS cards with the right to use the official UFS logo for the first time in the industry.

*Samsung has taken a leading role in standardization of JEDEC Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 1.0 Card Standard, and filed seven design patent applications to USPTO (US Patent and Trade Office) which the company disclosed to all JEDEC members under the RAND (reasonable and non-discriminatory licensing) condition that allows manufacturers to develop UFS card products without royalty. Royalty payment usually encompasses a significant portion of other types of removable card manufacturing. For more information, please visit http://www.jedec.org/news/pressreleases/jedec-publishes-universal-flash-storage-ufs-removable-card-standard/

**UFSA announced the release of a Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Compliance Test Matrix (CTM) in April, 2016. For more information, please visit https://ufsa.org/
