About the Conference

2010 sees the launch of the inaugural Mobile App World, where global leaders in mobile technology, app developers, and entrepreneurs gather to network, collaborate, and transform ideas into action. Delegates will learn about the latest developments and innovative campaigns through case studies, panel debates, audience interaction, and unique networking opportunities.

Mobile App World 2010 will also include four niche workshops, a developer lounge, and will hold the first Mobile App World Awards—a gala event to celebrate and highlight excellence in the global app industry.

Session Title: Using Web Technology to Solve Device Fragmentation
Speaker: Ben Combee, Senior Developer Relations Engineer, HP/Palm

Session Description: How do you support 21,643 different platforms? As the mobile web apps world becomes increasingly more complex, success rates swell for developers who can build applications that target a wide variety of devices. This is where the mobile Web comes in. Together we can make it a unified solution that lets you take your experiences cross device using the platform that you know and love. Ben Combee shares the HP/Palm vision of web technology as a way to build first-class applications for branding, communications and e-commerce using WebKit. We'll probe the power of this HTML5-based engine as the common denominator for today's mobile devices and discuss how to simplify the creation of complex 3D apps using web standards like Open GL ES.
Speaker Bio: Ben Combee is a Senior Developer Relations engineer with the Palm Personal Systems Group Global Business Unit of HP, where he specializes in supporting developers working on games, multimedia applications, and system software for webOS. Previously, Ben worked as a developer at Palm, Mozilla, Metrowerks, and Motorola, with a focus on mobile devices and software tools. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Computer Science. Ben lives in Brooklyn, NY where he’s a member of NYC Resistor, a hardware hacker collective.

Workshop Title: Building Cross-platform Apps Using WebKit
Speaker: Ben Combee, Senior Developer Relations Engineer, HP/Palm

In this two hour workshop, Ben Combee provides step-by-step instruction on developing a cross platform app that deploys to Palm webOS, Apple iOS, Google Android, and others without starting over again each time. He'll showcase PhoneGap tools in combination with the webOS SDK to develop code that can be deployed to many major platforms without significant duplication of work. Learn to leverage your investment—and standard web technologies—in this hands-on tutorial. The workshop is offered with at no cost to developers, but space has been limited to ensure an outstanding experience. Food and beverages will be provided to help fuel your big ideas. Register now.
