LG why you didn´t go with WebOS for smartphones when you had the chance. Now you are quitting your mobile phone business.

LG bought to HP the WebOS platform  ( Palm WebOS before that) when it was a unique mobile OS and no one had at that time the way it worked on the devices.

February 25, 2013

Hewlett-Packard Co said on Monday it will sell the webOS operating system to South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc, unloading the smartphone software it acquired through a $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in 2010.

Instead LG inserted it on their Smart TVs, some home appliances, car displays, and WebOS is now an Open Source, and it is coming on other TV brands around the world.

Now LG is quitting its mobile phone business that began with Android OS:

LG TO CLOSE MOBILE PHONE BUSINESS WORLDWIDE

Stepping Away from Phone Manufacturing and Sales Enables Company
to Focus on Growth Sectors Including EVs, IoT, and B2B Solutions

LG logo

SEOUL, April 5, 2021 LG Electronics Inc. (LG) announced that it is closing its mobile business unit. The decision was approved by its board of directors earlier today.

LG’s strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone sector will enable the company to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.

LG will provide service support and software updates for customers of existing mobile products for a period of time which will vary by region. LG will work collaboratively with suppliers and business partners throughout the closure of the mobile phone business. Details related to employment will be determined at the local level.

Moving forward, LG will continue to leverage its mobile expertise and develop mobility-related technologies such as 6G to help further strengthen competitiveness in other business areas. Core technologies developed during the two decades of LG’s mobile business operations will also be retained and applied to existing and future products.

The wind-down of the mobile phone business is expected to be completed by July 31 although the inventory of some existing models may still be available after that.

LG you lost your big chance when you did not take WebOS for your smartphones because you were making great hardware at that time.

Apple`s iOS8 is catching up Palm WebOS features after 5 years.

Francisco De Jesùs.

Opinion: Apple steals more Palm WebOS features in iOS8.

Apple today went big on their announcement about their new OS updates on their Mac and iOS devices with their Mac OS X 10 along with iOS 8. Amongst the announcement from Apple came their latest feature which they like to call " continuity" allowing users to easily share data across devices that are powered by apple operating systems. And of course, Apple being Apple(no pun intended) they like to brag about their superiority of their software operating system(name calling other OSes inferior to theirs) unveiling features like if they are the first ones to introduce or innovate them. They introduce others features like an improved "spotlight" search and improvements to the Apple App Store such as mobile "app previews".

One thing that Apple neglected to mention is where did they stole those features, one of the saddest thing is that im sure most of the bloggers and tech journalist will praise Apple for their innovative features like "continuity" that allows users to share data and answer calls from tablets to phones. Those features that many journalist will write in their blogs, those exact same new feature that they are padding themselves of the back(meaning Apple Inc) for making them available for their operating system has been available for years in Palm WebOS.

Lets see at a closer look, the features that were stolen from WebOS:

Apple's continuity in iOS 8: The ability of sharing data across devices have been dreamt by programers for centuries, and slowly mobile operating system creators had integrated into operating system from palm WebOS to blackberry 10 and even android. But never an operating system has impressed me on that level of integration like Palm WebOS, with it's synergy functionality. Even today, no OS has been able to match its functionality despite of its competitors cheaply copying its feature like Apple and even Google. Talking about copying or stealing features, Apple introduced today, continuity in iOS 8 giving users the ability to sync and hare data across devices....one of those functionality in continuity is the way users can receive text and make calls on the iPad and iPhone.

Journalist right now are writing articles about continuity and how ingenious it is, let them remind those tech bloggers someone else created those exact features way before Apple even thought of adding that to the mac os X and iOS and that company was "Palm" yep! That's right take that, Apple fanboys bloggers. The ability to share data/calls or text has been capable thanks to WebOS when I pair a Pre 3 smartphone to my TouchPad tablet (via touch to share) making it easy to receive texts or calls on the touchpad tablet giving me(users) freedom to answers calls directly on my tablet or phone even while they are charging across the room thanks to WebOS. And lets not forget when user pairs a touchpad tablet to an HP Veer or Pre 3 smartphone via Bluetooth, anyone can view or reply a SMS text message conversation with a friend while it shows up in the messaging application in one easy convenient thread.

Apple's spotlight for iOS 8: Apple in spotlight has been giving users the ability to search contacts or content from their phones, all while having the capability to search in files, photos and music. Today, Apple added more functionality to their spotlight feature on iOS 8, giving users to search through the Apple's App Store apps or now also on emails as well. Again someone has to remind Apple, that those features has been invented by "Palm" and it's simply named "JustType" a navigation bar in top of the home screen that allows for quick search through the phone, palm catalog and website simply by typing on it from phone home screen.

App Store app previews: Apple announcement some pretty decent upgrades to their App Store in iOS 8. The latest feature is called "app previews" giving users videos or description on the application that they are viewing on the App Store. Developers can embed videos on the app preview page to give users easier way to see what an app is capable of doing once it's installed on the device. Palm app catalog has been doing that since the beginnings of the creation of the palm catalog, palm open up the catalog with the ability for developers to attach videos describing their apps on the catalog. Since Apple, was the one introducing it on a big event today to the press is daunted across the web as the milestone of innovation.

Video: Palm webOS Pioneering key features are now borrowed by iOS, Android, and Blackberry.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Video: Palm webOS Pioneering key features are now borrowed by iOS, Android, and Blackberry.

Something that maybe you will remember with love, was written by our colleagues of the CalgaryHerald with an excellent description of every pioneering Palm webOS key features that are now replicated by rival mobile operating systems.

This is what  GADJO CARDENAS SEVILLA, WHATSYOURTECH.CA, CALGARY HERALD said:

It has been two years since HP shelved the webOS mobile operating system it inherited from Palm, yet many of the key features of that pioneering smartphone and tablet OS are now standard features in iOS, Android and even BlackBerry.

I recently revisited webOS by using both an HP Veer and Palm Pre 3 smartphones, neither of which made it to Canada. Despite being left behind in 2011, I found both these devices to be useful and intuitive and the operating system to be both elegant and fast.

Looking at the mobile landscape today, it is clear that a number of webOS-exclusive features were too good to die with the mismanaged OS. They have been ‘borrowed’ by today’s biggest mobile players.

Notifications
webOS had a very elegant way of pushing notifications on the homescreen of devices. The Palm smartphones that had an indicator light would pulse to notify users (not unlike how BlackBerry’s red notification light works).

For newly received messages and e-mails, webOS would flash the headers at the bottom of the screen and users could act on these by clicking to go to the message body or by swiping to the left to dismiss the alert for the time being.

webOS also allowed users to swipe down on the homescreen to toggle important controls such as Wi-Fi, Airplane mode, Bluetooth and even check the battery percentage.

These two features have, in some shape of form, been used in Android as well as iOS. This feature is called Window Shade (since you have to ‘draw’ them down or up to access them) or Control Center in iOS. Notifications on iOS and Android are variations of what webOS has used from the start.

Multi-tasking
webOS touted real-time multi-tasking where you could pause an application, open another, and then go back to the previously opened application without losing your place.

webOS handled this by using the ‘Cards’ paradigm with each app, page or instance, appearing as a card that could be moved around, accessed or swiped away when no longer needed.

BlackBerry’s PlayBook used a similar way to multi-task with an almost identical way to dismiss unused applications; BlackBerry 10 also has a tweaked version of this as well.

This style of multi-tasking will be one of the big features in Apple’s upcoming iOS 7 refresh ,and is an improvement over the way multiple apps are currently handled. Once more, the elegance and efficiency of webOS has transcended its roots and become the preferred way to handle multi-tasking on various mobile platforms.

Touch to Share
Long before NFC (Near Field Communication) was a buzzword for mobile commerce and sharing files between smartphones, webOS had a feature that allowed users of Pre smartphones to share websites, e-mails, photos and various other bits of data between devices.

Samsung’s S Beam feature is very similar although it uses an NFC chip instead of straight-up Bluetooth. S Beam makes it possible to share contacts, photos, audio and video files by simply touching two compatible devices together.

In the Apple world, the feature is coming to iOS 7 in the guise of AirDrop. AirDrop already exists with Apple’s notebooks and desktops, but will become even more useful when iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads can send files wirelessly to each other without requiring to touch each other.

Inductive Charging
The ability to charge your phone or tablet ‘wirelessly’ may seem common now for Nokia Lumia and Nexus 4 owners but this was introduced back in 2009 with its TouchStone charger and remained a feature of all webOS devices until the time that HP stopped making mobile hardware and relegated webOS to open source.

The only feature I don`t see replicated at this time by others mobile manufacturers, is the unique  Palm webOS Wave launcher.

Palm webOS: For HP printers not coming in 2011.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

“We are working to bring webOS to our printers as soon as possible, but I doubt it will be next year [2011]”, Stephan Batteux, portfolio manager Inkjet and Web Services for EMEA at HP, told pocket-lint during a demo of the company’s new Android power printers. He suggested that such a move is more likely to happen in “2012”.

Batteux also confirmed that the company is planning to launch a dedicated API for developers in the coming months for its new "app-based" printers, so that developers could easily create new apps.

So those worried about developing apps for an Android system that will quickly be replaced by a webOS one shouldn’t be, Batteux told  that the company was working on a way to make it easier to merge the two together in the future.

Batteux also confirmed that the company was working with a number of third-parties to create an enterprise version of its new ePrint system, one that will allow large companies to print to any printer on the system via the company’s intranet.

HP Withdraws from Windows Home Server, transfering for development on webOS

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Hewlett Packard has informed  that they have discontinued the MediaSmart Server and will not be releasing any more models either on the current version of Windows Home Server or the upcoming Vail platform. If you’ve recently purchased or will be purchasing one of the remaining units available, the warranty and support will continue for all products through their defined periods.

Allen Buckner, Marketing Manager for the former Home Server Group, gave  the news in a phone conference earlier this month, saying only that HP was “shifting additional resources to focus on webOS initiatives”. He told  that the team had already been reassigned, and that there were no further software updates planned for the platform.

"With the recent acquisition of Palm, HP’s Personal Systems Group is transferring the MediaSmart Server team to the Palm Global Business Unit to help with future development of the webOS. The MediaSmart hardware is used as a basis for the current HP StorageWorks X300 and X500 Data Vault models and is therefore also affected by this change. HP will continue to support current models with a three-year limited warranty on hardware, a three-year technical support warranty on software for the X500 and a one-year limited warranty for the X300 Data Vault.
HP understands that small business clients rely on HP StorageWorks for solutions that help store, manage and protect data in a simple, cost effective manner. HP StorageWorks will continue to develop products for the HP “Just Right IT” portfolio of offerings designed to make it easy for micro and small businesses to get exactly the IT capabilities they need at the right time, at just the right price."

Palm webOS: The Palm Pre 2 has native CPU scaling

WorldWideTech. Francisco De Jesús.

Thanks to a few Tweets from WebOSinternals and Markus Leutwyler, a Govnah screenshot indicates that the new Pre 2 dynamically scales its clock speed between 300Mhz when idle and 1Ghz when under full load. This wide range of CPU speed stepping is done natively without any additional patches or hackery on the part of the users, which is why a stock Pre 2 can not only outmuscle its older siblings but also outlast them even when powered by the exact same battery
.
While this change is presumably due to the newer TI OMAP 3630 CPU architecture in the Pre 2, it is not confirmed if WebOS 2.0 will bring any sort of tangible battery life improvements to older WebOS devices when it is released in the coming months.

Palm webOS:Jon Rubinstein: aggressively rolling out new devices. 12-18 new smartphones?

WorldWideTech. Francisco De Jesús.

Today at web 2.0 summit live stream we watched to Jon Rubinstein  SVP-GM  of Palm Global Business Unit HP, speaking about their projects , here are some parts of his speech:

“Several products that will clearly be hits when they come out“,

aggressively rolling out new devices. Pool will grow dramatically in next 12-18 devices.

That includes a "great tablet," which is coming soon. Rubinstein didn't provide any specifics about the tablet, like when it would actually hit the market.
He said HP has a separate group working on Windows tablets, and it made one for corporate customers that is selling well , that sounded like he was saying WebOS will be for consumers, and Windows will be for corporations.

Concluding the event, an audience member asked for a timeframe for smartphones and tablets. “Stay tuned. We’ve got some great things coming.

I am very happy they are not giving up at all.  12-18 devices for 2011 mean an average of 4 smartphones every 3 months and 2 tablets every 6 months.

The Palm Pad in my opinion is the priority number one for 2011 and that will be announced first in CES 2011. The Palm Pad with the Palm Pre 2 will be showed syncronizing , pairing each other and making HP
e-print friendly demos.

Unless they want to launch the first  group of 4 new smartphones on March 2011. They will give us a hint at CES 2011.

February 2011 the rumor, buzzes and leaked screen shots will start coming up for the new Palm smartphones.

If you are a Palm webOS fan stay tuned for what is up next.
