2012: Acer may employ eDP displays.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Acer has demanded its panel suppliers offer notebook display solutions with embedded DisplayPort (eDP) interfaces instead of the current LVDS (low-voltage differential signaling) mainstream interface standard, according to sources at panel makers.

A number of new notebook models rolled out by Acer in 2012 will come with eDP displays, the sources added.

With the exception of Apple's MacBook series, only a few notebook models from other vendors have employed eDP displays due to price differences between eDP and LVDS models.

However, Intel's notice that its Haswell platform scheduled to be released in 2013 will support only eDP specifications may push IC, panel and notebook makers to migrate to eDP standards.

Meanwhile, sources at connector makers also revealed that the replacement of LVDS with eDP will result in a decrease in demand for connectors in notebooks.
