Powered by LG WebOS, Amazon Alexa is coming to third-party Smart TVs

Alexa Delivers User-friendly Features and
Seamless Voice Control Via LG’s Magic Remote

For the first time, Amazon Alexa will be coming to a wide range of third-party TVs powered by webOS, LG Electronics’ proprietary TV platform.

TV brands such as Advance, Blaupunkt, Eko, JSW, Manta, Polaroid, RCA, Seiki, and Skytech as well as original design manufacturers Ayonz, Dualshine, Konka, Silicon Player, Skyworth, and Xianyou, among others, will soon be offering this capability in their compatible webOS-powered TVs with Magic Remote so even more consumers can enjoy the intelligent voice recognition capabilities of Alexa.

LG’s proprietary ThinQ AI and voice recognition technologies allow webOS TV owners to simply speak into the advanced Magic Remote to get things done or get the information they need. With its point and click capability, LG Magic Remote is extremely intuitive to use and automatically recognizes and connects to set-top boxes and other compatible devices such as soundbars.

Simply long-pressing the Amazon Prime Video button and speaking into the Magic Remote opens up a whole new level of convenience, enabling webOS TV owners to adjust the TV volume, change channels, play music, read news, control a smart home, tell a joke, and more.

For example, simply say “Alexa, open YouTube” or “Alexa, suggest comedy movies” into the remote and Alexa will respond immediately, displaying viewing options on the screen for one’s enjoyment.

“The addition of Amazon Alexa to the long list of webOS features will enhance the user experience and boost the value of our growing smart TV ecosystem,” said Jung Sung-Hyun, head of content services at LG Home Entertainment Company. “Bringing together the capabilities of Alexa with the convenience of webOS to third-party TVs is a win-win-win for TV brands, customers, and developers.”

The built-in Alexa feature will be activated over the air starting in the third quarter in North America followed by other regions including Europe and Asia.

LG why you didn´t go with WebOS for smartphones when you had the chance. Now you are quitting your mobile phone business.

Phones that were ahead of their time: Palm Pre

LG bought to HP the WebOS platform  ( Palm WebOS before that) when it was a unique mobile OS and no one had at that time the way it worked on the devices.

February 25, 2013

Hewlett-Packard Co said on Monday it will sell the webOS operating system to South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc, unloading the smartphone software it acquired through a $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in 2010.

Instead LG inserted it on their Smart TVs, some home appliances, car displays, and WebOS is now an Open Source, and it is coming on other TV brands around the world.

Now LG is quitting its mobile phone business that began with Android OS:

LG TO CLOSE MOBILE PHONE BUSINESS WORLDWIDE

Stepping Away from Phone Manufacturing and Sales Enables Company
to Focus on Growth Sectors Including EVs, IoT, and B2B Solutions

LG logo

SEOUL, April 5, 2021 LG Electronics Inc. (LG) announced that it is closing its mobile business unit. The decision was approved by its board of directors earlier today.

LG’s strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone sector will enable the company to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.

LG will provide service support and software updates for customers of existing mobile products for a period of time which will vary by region. LG will work collaboratively with suppliers and business partners throughout the closure of the mobile phone business. Details related to employment will be determined at the local level.

Moving forward, LG will continue to leverage its mobile expertise and develop mobility-related technologies such as 6G to help further strengthen competitiveness in other business areas. Core technologies developed during the two decades of LG’s mobile business operations will also be retained and applied to existing and future products.

The wind-down of the mobile phone business is expected to be completed by July 31 although the inventory of some existing models may still be available after that.

LG you lost your big chance when you did not take WebOS for your smartphones because you were making great hardware at that time.

You will start seeing the LG WebOS platform on other TV brands

Is not the first on the market that has licensed its software for smart TVs, now LG will start licensing the LG WebOS platform to other TV makers. Konka (China) and Blaupunkt (Germany) are the first companies to license LG WebOS.

LG wants to take webOS beyond TVs to projectors, car dashboards, and even refrigerators. In 2018, the company also released an open source version of webOS.

In 2021, buyers will start seeing webOS in TVs from other brands. With webOS, the user has access to apps like Disney+, HBO, Netflix and YouTube as well as other TV functions.
However, it is unclear if TVs from other brands will have feature-parity with webOS in LG's own TVs.

LG's first licensees are Konka and Blaupunkt. Konka will use webOS in its U4 range that will be available in the US as 43- to 75-inch 4K LCD TVs.
In addition, Konka will have webOS in its H2 range of TVs while the company's other models will be Android TV-based. Blaupunkt will use webOS 5.0 (from 2020) in its BP range of 42 to 75-inch LCD TVs.

It`s Official: LG launches the Google Assistant on 2018 enabled AI TVs. Combines with LG’s award-winning webOS based ThinQ AI

It`s Official: LG launches the Google Assistant on 2018 AI TVs. Combines with LG’s award-winning webOS based ThinQ AI.

Press Release:

LG LAUNCHES THE GOOGLE ASSISTANT ON 2018 AI-ENABLED TVS

Activation of the Google Assistant Drives LG’s Critically-Acclaimed 4K UHD TVs.

Into the Connected Home Ecosystem with Cutting-Edge AI Services

SEOUL, May 8, 2018 — First announced at CES 2018, the Google Assistant is now available on LG’s 2018 AI TV line-up. This includes both LG OLED TVs and LG SUPER UHD TVs with ThinQ AI, which will deliver cutting-edge AI features operated directly through the TV’s remote control with no additional hardware required. The collaboration between Google and LG will add more convenience in consumers’ lives, and the synergistic effects from this technology partnership positively impacting LG’s award-winning TVs.

The Google Assistant combines with LG’s award-winning webOS based ThinQ AI to bring new levels of convenience and control to the consumer. This enables 2018 LG TVs to deliver an intuitive AI experience that uses natural language commands to control TV functions, seamlessly discover and play content, and control TV settings. With the Google Assistant, you can ask it to help manage daily tasks, access information, control compatible smart home devices including lighting, appliances and much more.

Beginning this year, LG and Google began collaborating to develop a wide range of features and are working on expanding consumer accessibility in multiple languages. By adding the Google Assistant to the webOS platform of LG’s 2018 AI TVs, the advanced machine learning and natural language processing technologies that Google is known for will simplify life for consumers worldwide. LG’s implementation reflects the importance the company places on creating and providing a more complete, accessible and diverse range of AI services.

LG’s 2018 AI TVs can perform hundreds of voice commands utilizing the company’s own open smart platform as well as the built in Google Assistant. With LG’s proprietary ThinQ AI users can immediately connect to external gaming consoles and soundbars (“Connect to soundbar”), they can switch picture mode (“Change to Cinema Mode”) or turn the TV off at set times.

Additionally, searching for content is even simpler and more convenient with LG TVs. LG AI-enabled TVs can instantly retrieve information or switch to a channel that offers the content requested by the viewer. “Switch to Discovery channel” instantly connects one to information about future travel destinations. Users can learn more about their desired films simply by saying a character’s or actor’s name, they can tell the TV to “Search for the soundtrack of this movie” or “Turn off the TV when this program is over” without needing to schedule a time.

With the Google Assistant built in, LG’s AI TVs offer users a streamlined experience that allows them to manage different tasks, find answers, or control smart home devices. Simply press and hold the mic button and ask for information such as the weather forecast (“What’s the weather this weekend?”), nearby local businesses, or check the score of the big game without disturbing the viewing experience. Users can relive their favorite moments by displaying memories from Google Photos. Services such as food delivery and transportation will also be easier with the addition of third-party Actions available in the near future.

With help from the Google Assistant, LG’s AI TVs can serve as the center of your smart home, offering access to devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, thermostats, air purifiers, smart lighting devices and many more. The Google Assistant works with more than 5,000 smart devices across hundreds of popular brands making it easier to control smart speakers and other devices connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

LG OLED TVs and LG SUPER UHD TVs with ThinQ AI and the Google Assistant will be available in the United States starting in May with key markets in Europe and Asia to follow.

“With the Google Assistant now available natively in 2018 LG AI TVs, I believe we’re going to see a whole new level of AI adoption in the home,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “LG’s unique partnership with Google allows us to be the first TV brand to offer the Google Assistant on our own OS which is a huge benefit for customers who are fans of webOS. With great partners like Google, we expect there to be many more exciting AI news to come from LG.”

LG’s 2018 AI TVs also work with existing Google Assistant devices such as Google Home and other smart speakers with the Assistant built in, allowing users to send voice commands directly from a separate Assistant device to their LG TV. TV owners can speak to other Assistant devices to control TV functions such as volume, play, pause, start, stop, fast forward, channel selection, content search, among many others. LG’s 2018 AI-enabled TVs will work with other Google Assistant devices in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia with further expansion to be announced later this year.

LG OLED TV with AI (Artificial Intelligence) ThinQ® has the Google Assistant built in, so your TV can be the center of your smart home. Ask your Assistant to help manage daily tasks like scheduling calendar events or adding items to your shopping list. See answers to things you want to know, including the weather forecast or game scores. Or, control your smart home devices such as change light settings, check room temperature and more.

*Service limited to certain languages. Some features require 3rd party service subscription.

ZeeVee Announces Encoder Interoperability With LG webOS IP-Enabled Commercial Displays.

ZeeVee, Inc. a leading global manufacturer of video and signal distribution technology, has developed an interface and certification process for the LG webOS for Signage platform, assuring interoperability between its iSeries and ZyPerMX IP encoders and IP-enabled commercial displays from LG Electronics.

“LG’s broad assortment of IP-enabled digital signage displays allows AV professionals to integrate displays seamlessly into an AV over IP deployment without the need for a separate IP decoder at every screen,” said Art Weeks, senior IP product manager for ZeeVee.

“Working with LG, ZeeVee now provides fully tested and compatible IP encoders from our HDbridge3000 IP-enabled media modules to the H.264, ZyPerMX, which can leverage the LG webOS for Signage platform,” Weeks continued.

Using the webOS application in conjunction with LG displays and ZeeVee IP encoders eliminates the need for an external IP decoder at each display, allowing integrators to save time during the installation process and significantly reduces the points of failure, increasing overall deployment reliability and performance.

“For the past three years ZeeVee has been focused on manufacturing IP solutions for AV integrators and their customers that simplify deploying AV over IP.

Their webOS encoder interoperability with digital signage displays means decreased installation time, more affordability, and higher reliability when implementing an AV over IP solution,” said Garry Wicka, head of marketing at LG Electronics USA Business Solutions. “This truly leverages the capability of IP in the AV industry.”

LG Electronics' 'webOS for Signage' Platform Enhances 2015 Commercial Display Solutions.

Featured at DSE 2015, New Platform Brings Flexibility, Interactivity to 'Smart' Digital Signage Displays.

The commercial version of LG Electronics' popular webOS smart TV platform expanding into more digital signage displays in 2015  offers a convenient new option for content providers and business owners using LG's Smart Platform Signage solutions.
Optimized for commercial applications, LG's "webOS for Signage" is an all-in-one hardware and software platform. The launch of webOS for Signage builds on the runaway success of the webOS smart TV platform for consumer television. The award-winning webOS approach is widely considered the most intuitive smart TV platform on the market.
"Beyond providing customized and functional solutions for business owners and system integrators, LG's webOS for Signage enables a variety of web-based applications across multiple platforms, including Linux, Android, iOS and Windows, as well as the ability to write applications using HTML 5," said Clark Brown, digital signage vice president for LG Electronics USA.
For 2015, LG's Smart Platform Signage solution running webOS allows system integrators to download useful content and develop customized applications that fit their exact needs.  With webOS, LG's Smart Platform Signage can be updated immediately via a smartphone or tablet. WiFi connectivity eliminates the need for a wired connection or costly network infrastructure.
LG has engaged in new and noteworthy software partnerships to further develop these capabilities and bring cloud-based digital signage to LG digital displays featuring the webOS platform. Examples include partnerships with such leading companies as Signagelive and Ping HD, which have announced customized applications:
  • Signagelive's low-cost, fully-supported cloud solution that runs on LG's flexible webOS for signage platform eliminates the need for external media players to run and manage digital signage campaigns.
  • Ping HD has launched EngagePHDTM, an easy-to-use, Web-based design, content management and network monitoring application with support for LG's webOS commercial displays.
"Providing support for the LG webOS display range expands the choice of compatible solutions available to our customers," saidJason Cremins, CEO of Signagelive. "LG's highly regarded reputation in the market place together with our cross-platform capabilities make digital signage technology accessible and affordable for wide-scape commercial use by all market sectors."
Kevin Goldsmith, Director of Digital Media Operations at Ping HD, said, "A market-leading yet simplified solution for software partners like LG's webOS was ideal for EngagePHD. LG's solution was top of mind when we designed our enhanced content management software for low-cost, robust and scalable Digital Signage platforms."
"Among the key benefits to content providers and app developers are the flexibility and ease-of-use of webOS for Signage, meaning faster development and more seamless integration," Brown explained.
"But even more importantly, the webOS platform is a high-performance system-on-a-chip approach with powerful capabilities that can actually reduce the total cost of ownership," said Brown.
