Samsung Electronics’ new smart wristband Gear Fit won the award for best mobile device at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, Spain, on Thursday.

GSMA, the organizer of the MWC trade show, chooses the most innovative device displayed at the event and announces the winner for the award on the last day of the show.

Sporting the world’s first 1.84-inch curved display, Samsung Gear Fit received a lot of attention from the media and consumers.

The wristband is also equipped with a heart-beat monitoring sensor, and has fitness software that tracks users’ exercise routines.

Users can receive alerts on the wristband for incoming calls, text messages, emails and schedule alerts from their Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

Samsung’s rival LG Electronics was named the most innovative device manufacturer.

Samsung’s and LG’s flagship smartphone models, the Galaxy S5 and G Pro 2, respectively, were both chosen as top products by many IT media outlets including Ubergizmo, Android Authority and Know Your Mobile.

Aeroflex affirms commitment to 5G research and development.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Increasing its involvement in 5GIC program, Aeroflex demonstrates potential 5G modulation scheme.

Aeroflex Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aeroflex Holding Corp, announced today that it is actively working on developing technologies towards potential Fifth Generation (5G) wireless systems, and is a founding member of the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) program, led by the University of Surrey, UK.

Aeroflex is one of the founding partners in 5GIC, which is conducting research and development into advanced technologies for the 5G network of the future. The project aims to establish a world-leading position in mobile broadband communications, and participants include leading global mobile network operators, infrastructure and tools providers, along with media and communications organizations, in addition to the University itself.

“The 5GIC program gives us an excellent platform for collaboration with world-class researchers and companies in this exciting mobile communications field,” said Li-Ke Huang, Technology Manager of Aeroflex. “As a leading wireless network infrastructure test solution provider, Aeroflex is fully committed to developing and  providing solutions to tackle the new test and measurement needs and challenges of the future 5G technologies.”

Aeroflex’s early engagement in 5G research will consolidate its position as a leading innovator in wireless network infrastructure test technologies and systems, providing test and measurement products to enable all stages of the R&D cycle for this new generation of wireless technology. Aeroflex’s involvement includes assuring the testability of the future high-complexity, high-density, intelligent large scale wireless systems by developing advanced wireless network simulation and modelling techniques for effective and efficient test scenario generation.

“Aeroflex has been a key partner in 5G research right from the beginning, just as we have been with LTE-A,” said Li-Ke Huang. “We are playing a pivotal role in test and measurement innovations to enable the core wireless technology research to develop concept-proving system prototypes, towards 5G and beyond.”

More about Aeroflex 5G technology
In co-operation with 5GIC, Aeroflex is evaluating and developing the use of the industry benchmark TM500 infrastructure test platform for research into new air interface technologies that may be suitable for 5G. A filter band multi-carrier (FBMC) modem architecture with isotropic orthogonal transform algorithm (IOTA) has been selected as the first of the new air interface options to be explored, and Aeroflex is developing a practical IOTA modem on the TM500 test mobile platform. The prototype modem was being demonstrated on the Aeroflex stand at Mobile World Congress.

Combining 5GIC’s core algorithm research and Aeroflex’s wireless system engineering capabilities has already yielded positive initial results in experimental modem design. These include evaluation of physical layer performance gains resulting in potential system design enhancements that could be achieved using FBMC technologies. It has also facilitated the validation of theoretical analysis, and helped both in understanding and solving practical design issues and in identifying recommendations for future areas of research.

MWC 2014:Altair,Macom,D2 Technologies and Alpha Networks Present Pioneering Android LTE Smart Home Gateway.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Altair Semiconductor (http://www.altair-semi.com), the world's leading developer of high-performance, single-mode LTE chipsets, today announced that it has partnered with M/A-COM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: MTSI) (MACOM) and D2 Technologies to power the ASL-14331M, a new LTE gateway developed by Alpha Networks Inc.

The ASL-14331M pioneers a new generation of "Smart Home" devices, offering broadband Internet connectivity. This enables Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and smart-home functionality that allows for remote control and monitoring of various appliances and sensors in the home.

The solution is based on Altair's award winning FourGee-3100/6200 LTE solution, MACOM's recently acquired Mindspeed® Comcerto® 2000 Application Processor, and D2's vPort GW 2.0 IMS VoLTE client software.

"Over the years, Alpha Networks has accumulated valuable experience in networking design and development. Our exceptional capability in this industry can be proven in multiple areas such as evolving network technologies and diversifying applications," said Harrison Chang, President of Alpha Networks.

"The ASL-14331M is capable of integrating all home connected devices, and seamlessly connecting to cloud services. It simply transforms any family's traditional gateway into a window to the cloud and a hub of automatic controls. Alpha Networks is pleased to work with Altair, MACOM and D2 to provide brand new home networking solutions and create a diverse and convenient smart home environment for users."

"This exciting product, which extends LTE Internet connectivity to the home-control domain, demonstrates the types of innovation users can expect to see as the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes a reality," said Eran Eshed, Co-Founder and VP of Marketing and Business Development at Altair. "The best-in-class performance and maturity of our single-mode LTE chipset made it a natural choice for powering this innovative new product. We are pleased to be part of this successful ecosystem collaboration."

"We are pleased to participate in this cutting-edge demonstration," said Laurent Hendrichs, Director of Marketing, Communications Processors, at MACOM. "Our Comcerto 2000 processors are well known for high-speed networking in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) routers. With outstanding Java performance, a comprehensive set of security features, and an innovative power management architecture, they are also ideally suited for applications such as smart home and security gateways. Thanks to this new Alpha Networks design, our customers now have access to a compelling platform that will allow them to tap into the emerging LTE broadband and IoT markets."

"We are excited to partner with industry leaders Alpha, Altair and MACOM to develop a product that is at the forefront of VoLTE enabled IoT connectivity," said Doug Makishima, Chief Operating Officer at D2 Technologies. "This collaboration exemplifies how D2's standards-compliant vPort 4G VoLTE software, with proven interoperability with multiple operators, enables fast time to market for VoLTE enabled Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and smart home router CPE applications."

D2 Technologies' vPort GW 2.0 IMS VoLTE client software offers broadband service providers a carrier grade, interoperable solution to enable HD quality VoLTE in wireless client devices. The embedded client is fully IR.92 VoLTE compliant and includes support for IMS session initiation protocol (SIP), short message service (SMS) over IP, short message peer-to-peer (SMPP), ISIM and USIM authentication and registration, XCAP call supplemental services, and key softDSP voice engine components such as voice CODECs, LEC, CID, DTMF, Fax and more for FXS telephone ports.

The ASL-14331M will be demoed at Mobile World Congress at: Hall 1, Stand 1A18MR
Altair representatives are available to meet at Mobile World Congress in rooms 5L35MR and 5L38MR.
