Brazil: A fossil of a new species of reptile is discovered .

The well-preserved skull allows scientists to identify the species called Teyujagua paradoxa. Photo: Nature.

Teyujagua paradoxa is the name of a new species of reptile that lived 250 million years ago in southern Brazil and was identified thanks to a fossil skull, virtually complete and well preserved, found in the state of Rio Grande.

The fossil was discovered in early 2015 by a team of paleontologists from the Federal University of Pampa on a rock Triassic (one of the three geological periods of the Age Mosezoica) found near the Brazilian city of Sao Francisco de Assis, as published today March 11, 2016 Scientific Reports, the Nature group.

This discovery, which helped experts from the Federal University of Pampa (Brazil) and Birmingham (UK) "helps to clarify the initial evolution of the group that gave rise to dinosaurs, pterosaurs (flying reptiles), crocodiles and birds "she explains a statement.

Teyujagua is a Guarani word that means fierce lizard and refers to a mythological beast called Teju Jagua, which is usually depicted as a dog-headed lizard. The Teyujagua was a quadruped, about 1.5 meters long, with curved teeth very sharp and serrated, indicating that their diet was carnivorous.

Nostrils the top of the nose is placed, a typical feature of some aquatic animals or semi-aquatic, like today's crocodiles. Its natural habitat is believed to be the banks of rivers and lakes, where hunting amphibians and small reptiles.

This is a very different fossil others of the same era, because their anatomy is halfway between the most primitive reptiles and the group called Archosauriformes, which includes all dinosaurs and extinct pterosaurs, with crocodiles and current birds.

The discovery of this fossil is important because the Teyujagua lived after the mass extinction of the Permian-Triassic, which occurred 252 million years ago that wiped out 90% of the species and was probably triggered by a volcanic eruption of great intensity occurring in eastern Russia today.

The Teyujagua provides new insights into how recovered and developed terrestrial ecosystems after the mass extinction. At that time, the Archosauriformes and their close relatives, as Teyujaguas were the dominant animals of terrestrial ecosystems and eventually led to the dinosaurs.

Dr. Felipe Pinheiro, of the Federal University of Pampa said the discovery of this new species was "really exciting. Since I saw that beautiful skull for the first time on the ground, still almost completely covered in stone, we knew we had something extraordinary in hands".

Once in the laboratory, the fossil exceeded the expectations of experts. "It featured a combination of features never seen before, indicating Teyujagua the only position in the evolutionary tree of an important group of vertebrates".

FIFA WORLD CUP 2014 BRAZIL Opening ceremony at 15:15 p.m. Download Match Schedule.

Francisco De Jesùs.

The FIFA WORLD CUP 2014 BRAZIL Opening ceremony will start at 15:15 p.m Sao Paulo time, June 12.

12 June 2014 is a day that the world’s football fans have been waiting expectantly for ever since the last FIFA World Cup™ came to an end. It is the day that Brazil 2014 will finally get under way. While the 32 national teams participating in the competition and the 12 Host Cities put the finishing touches to their preparations, more than 600 dancers are rehearsing hard to stage a show that will delight and captivate the watching world at the tournament’s Opening Ceremony.
Kicking off at 15:15 p.m the ceremony will showcase the diversity and beauty of Brazil and set the scene for the Opening Match between the host nation and Croatia at 17:00, in Sao Paulo.
“The Opening Ceremony is a tribute to Brazil and its treasures: nature, people football,” said the show’s Belgian artistic director Daphne Cornez, after overseeing another of the many rehearsals that will take place this month. “The sense of excitement here is amazing and everyone is very motivated. It doesn’t matter whether they’re feeling tired or hot sometimes or if they have to go through routines again and again: they just keep on smiling. It’s amazing.”
Each of the country’s treasures is represented in the show by characters and props. The focal point of the show is a central, “living” LED ball made up of more than 90,000 light clusters producing a luminance of 7,000 Nits.
While the ceremony will last 25 minutes, the organisers estimate that 20 hours of preparation will go into each of those minutes, with around 84 hours of rehearsals taking place before the big day.
“I went, did the test and got selected. I was very happy and excited. I could hardly contain myself,” said 60-year-old Edna Sasson, one of the dancers who will be representing a river at the ceremony. “It’s a unique event. It’s not like dancing at the local theatre or any other theatre for that matter. You’re dancing at the start of the World Cup, with millions and millions of people watching. I’m loving it.”
The Opening Ceremony is a tribute to Brazil and its treasures: nature, people football.
Daphne Cornez, artistic director of the Opening Ceremony
With the ceremony taking place within two hours of the tournament kick-off, the main challenge the organisers faced in planning it was to make sure the pitch is not damaged. Every part of the set has been tested in the presence of a pitch specialist, with each prop being placed on the ground for four hours and the moisture levels and reaction of the pitch being measured before the test and after it, for four days.
“The ceremony is taking place during the day, which means we won’t be using a lot of lighting or fireworks,” explained Joana Havelange, the executive director of operational planning and support. “There will be no pointed, sharp objects on the pitch or anything that’s very heavy. As a result, the show will focus heavily on the dancers, the sets, the dance routines, fantasy sequences and the soundtrack, which is really lovely and took two and a half months to write.”
Every member of the cast, which also includes acrobatic gymnasts, trampolinists, capoeiraperformers and stilt walkers, volunteered to perform at the Opening Ceremony. One of the gymnasts is 19-year-old Lucas Benedetti, who said he hoped that the show would allow the people of Brazil to find out more about what he and his colleagues do, while boatswain Flavio Silva, who is 36, said that having capoeira as part of the ceremony would remind people of the need to respect racial and cultural diversity.
“Capoeira is one of the biggest symbols there is against discrimination,” she said. “If you perform capoeira, there’s no way you’re not going to like black people, white people, fat people, thin people, ugly people and beautiful people. Capoeira is universal.”
Once the dancers and performers have completed their contribution in representing the treasures of Brazil, the ceremony will come to a close with Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez, Claudia Leitte and the drumming collective Olodum performing We Are One, the official song of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

Space: Astronomy is astonished. Asteroid with Rings found.Video.

rancisco De Jesùs.

Astronomers used seven telescopes, but just one revealed the pair of rings orbiting the rocky Chariklo. The asteroid's 155-mile diameter (250 kilometers) is dwarfed by the giant gas planets, the only other bodies known to have rings.

"This discovery shows that size is not important in order to have — or not have — rings," Felipe Braga-Ribas, of the National Observatory in Brazil, told Space.com by email.

An asteroid among giants

On June 3, 2013, Braga-Ribas led a team of astronomers in observing Chariklo as it passed in front of a distant star — a process known as an occultation. As the asteroid traveled, it blocked light from the star, enabling scientists to learn more about it.

The astronomers were surprised to discover that a few seconds before and after the main occultation, the light dimmed slightly, indicating that something circled the rocky asteroid. By comparing the data gathered from seven different telescopes, the team was able to identify the shape, size and orientation of the rings.

The system consists of a dense, 4-mile-wide (7 km) ring near the planet, and a smaller 2-mile-wide (3 km) ring farther out.

From the surface of the asteroid, "they would be two spectacular sharp and really bright rings, crossing all the sky," Braga-Ribas said. "They would be noticeably close, as they are at about 1/1,000 of the moon's distance from us," he added.

He went on to say that the larger, inner ring would block the view of the outer ring from the ground. The rings are similar to those around Saturn, in that both are very dense, bright and possibly formed by rock and water ice. But their scales are quite different.

"The whole Chariklo system would fit about 12 times in the Cassini Division," Braga-Ribas said, referring to the largest gap in Saturn's rings.

Particles orbiting Chariklo also travel more slowly — only tens of meters per second, compared with tens of kilometers per second in the rings of Saturn.

While Saturn is the most well-known ringed body in the solar system, Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus also have their own, fainter rings.

Fuleco the FIFA Foot-ball World Cup 2014 mascot, blows a kiss. Video.

Francisco De Jesùs.

)

Well, I think everybody know at this time Fuleco  an Armadillo, is the official mascot of the FIFA  Foot-Ball World Cup 2014 to take place in Brazil this June 12-July 13.

How the FULECO name for the mascot was selected:

The wait is over: the Official Mascot of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ has a name, with more than 1.7 million people voting for Fuleco™.

The three-month public voting campaign, supported by FIFA Partner Coca-Cola, proved to be popular as the Brazilian public came out in force to cast their votes. More than 48 per cent voted for Fuleco™, ahead of Zuzeco (31 per cent) and Amijubi (21 per cent), making it the unanimous winner.

Ever since being introduced to the public, Fuleco™ has been making his presence felt by touring the host country and getting to know the people of Brazil. The latest results from FIFA’s independent brand tracking research indicate that he is fast becoming popular in Brazil
• 89 per cent of Brazilians said they had seen the Official Mascot
• Fuleco™ is seen as a likeable character – he scores an average of 7.3 out of 10 on appeal

Communicating the importance of the environment and ecology is a key objective of the next FIFA World Cup. Recent results from FIFA’s 2012 public opinion tracker in Brazil also confirm the importance of the topic of sustainability and the environment among fans in the host country. Over 90 per cent of Brazilians believe that Brazil 2014 should be environmentally friendly.

As one of the most high-profile ambassadors of the event and a member of a vulnerable species, the Official Mascot can play a key role in driving environmental awareness. The name Fuleco™ is a fusion of the words 'futebol' and 'ecologia'. This seamlessly represents the way in which the FIFA World Cup can combine the two to encourage people to behave in an environmentally friendly way. In voting for the name Fuleco™, the Brazilian population has clearly demonstrated an affinity for both themes that the name epitomises.

Part of FIFA’s brand tracking study also investigated the key characteristics of Fuleco™ that resonate among the public. The results are encouraging as 'Brazilian', 'nature', 'friendly' and 'passion for football' come out top in terms of traits that best describe him. This clearly shows that Brazilians already recognise the significance of the armadillo as an important ambassador for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and his role in inspiring fans all over the world with his passion for the sport and his country.

Science: A Diamond from Juina, Brazil, water -rich, holds clues of water deep presence in Earth`s mantle.

A diamond from Juína, Brazil, containing a water-rich inclusion of the olivine mineral ringwoodite. Just 5 millimetres long, this diamond formed in the deep mantle and carries an enclosure of ringwoodite, a mineral never before found in a terrestrial rock.

Pearson and his team studied one such diamond, which weighed 0.09 grams and came from the Juína district in Brazil. As they  examined impurities in it using a light-scattering method known as Raman spectroscopy, they came across something unusual: a grain 40 micrometres across that turned out to be ringwoodite — a high-pressure form of olivine, a mineral that makes up much of the upper mantle. Ringwoodite had previously been found only in meteorites or synthesized in the lab.

A microscopic crystal of a mineral never before seen in a terrestrial rock holds clues to the presence of vast quantities of water deep in Earth’s mantle, scientists report in a paper published today in Nature Journal.

The discovery came from a diamond weighing less than one-tenth of a gram, found in Brazil. Further studies of the sample could help to answer the long-standing question of the origin of the planet's water.

Most diamonds form at depths of about 150 to 200 kilometres, but 'ultradeep' diamonds come from a region of the mantle known as the transition zone, 410 to 660 kilometres below the surface, says Graham Pearson, a mantle geochemist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and the lead author of the study.
Impurities in ultradeep diamonds can be used as probes to study the regions in which the stones formed — and in particular to understand what minerals are present at those depths. Certain minerals have crystal structures that can form only at high pressures or temperatures, or both, and many rearrange themselves into different structures when the pressure is taken off or the temperature goes down. Thus, when the churning of the mantle brings rock towards the surface, some of the minerals that formed at great depths can no longer be found. But if the minerals are trapped inside diamonds, they stay compressed in their original forms. “These high-pressure diamonds give you a window into the deep Earth,” says Pearson.

Rock star

Mineralogical theory and seismic findings had long suggested that ringwoodite is a major component of the transition zone, and the finding backs that up. “It confirms that our ideas of how the mantle is constructed are correct,” says Hans Keppler, a geophysicist at the University of Bayreuth in Germany, who wrote about the find in an accompanying News & Views2.
Unlike better-studied forms of olivine, ringwoodite can hold a substantial amount of water. The sample therefore had the potential to help resolve a long-standing controversy over just how much water the transition zone contains. Using infrared spectroscopy, Pearson’s team found that its tiny fleck of ringwoodite contained about 1% water by weight. “That may not sound like much,” Pearson says, “but when you realize how much ringwoodite there is, the transition zone could hold as much water as all the Earth’s oceans put together.”
But the water content of a single crystal is not necessarily representative of the entire zone, says Norm Sleep, a geophysicist at Stanford University in California. Diamonds are produced by an unusual type of volcanism that is normally associated with water-rich rock, he says. He compares the situation to that of someone panning for gold and finding a large nugget: “It would be unwise to assume that all the gravel in the stream is gold nuggets.”
Pearson agrees. Remote-sensing studies of the mantle have produced conflicting results, suggesting that the water content of the transition zone may be “spotty”, he says. “Our sample appears to come from one of the wet spots.”

Where it all began

There are two theories as to where the mantle's water came from. One is that it was ocean water that was carried deep underground when sea-floor rocks were subducted by plate tectonics. The other is that deeper layers of the Earth still contain water that was part of the materials that formed the Earth.
If the water has been there since Earth formed, its ratio of deuterium to normal hydrogen could be different from that found in sea water today—and closer to the composition of the Earth’s primordial water.  If so, that ratio could provide clues as to whether the water came from asteroids or from comets, says Humberto Campins, an asteroid researcher at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
Pearson sees a value to checking the isotope ratio, but so far his group has been unwilling to do such destructive tests on the only known piece of mantle ringwoodite. “We have to think really carefully on what we do next on this sample because it’s very small: 40 micrometres,” he says. “That means you can only think of doing one or two additional analyses.”
