Opel begins operations in Ecuador with five models as part of the expansion plan of the German brand.

With two agencies in Quito and Guayaquil, Opel has entered the Ecuador market this month as part of the expansion plan that the German brand has in Latin America.

Opel's landing is carried out by the Nexumcorp corporation, a group that obtained representation for Ecuadorian territory and which it had been seeking since 2019. This firm also represents other brands, such as Peugeot and Changan.

The company has made an initial investment of around $ 3 million to start the commercialization of vehicles. Until 2023, the firm's plan is to have six agencies, according to Marcelo Gárate, manager of dealerships.

For this first year of introduction, Opel plans to sell 500 units in Ecuador, a market that after a complex year marked by the pandemic is showing signs of recovery.

Esteban Vergara, distribution manager, says that the five-year goal is to place 3,000 units and be among the five European brands with the highest sales volume.

Opel belonged to General Motors for decades, but was not marketed in some markets due to the company's strategy. For this reason, some Opel models, such as the Corsa, were sold in Ecuador under the Chevrolet brand.

The German brand was bought by PSA in 2017, and is currently part of the Stellantis Group, which has designed a plan to expand in Latin America.

Within this initial plan, Opel has entered Ecuador with five models: Corsa, Crossland, Grandland X, Combo and Vivaro. Prices range from $ 19,990 to $ 38,490.

Models are imported from Europe. Nexumcorp hopes to take advantage of the advantages offered by the agreement with the European Union to offer competitive prices.

Along with the introduction in Ecuador, Opel began to compete in Colombia and Uruguay in the first half of 2021.

Bill Mont, Opel's director of international operations, maintains that they are working with importing partners so that the brand can reach other markets. "International growth is a key focus for the brand," he says.

Nokia Networks collaborated with University of Kaiserslautern in Germany to research on 5G

Nokia Networks recently collaborated with the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany to do research on 5G network architecture and also work closely with the university to study the changes that are required in the telco architecture going forward.
Nokia Networks already have collaborations with several leading universities in Europe, the USA and China to make the 5G concept and technologies as viable and futureproof as possible.
5G networks will have to meet a wide array of diverse and extreme requirements. There will be need for super fast and reliable connectivity with virtually zero latency for use cases such as remote control of robots, and support for billions of sensors and things.
5G will provide consistent and high quality connectivity for people and things, creating the perception of infinite capacity. Furthermore, 5G networks will combine revolutionary technologies and existing mobile radio generations, as well as Wi-Fi, into a new system. Those technologies and layers will need to be managed as one.
A new network architecture is required to manage these complex multi-layer and multi-technology networks, and to build-in flexibility even for applications that are yet to be envisioned. 5G networks will have to be programmable, software driven and managed holistically to enable a diverse range of services in a profitable way.
The cooperation with University of Kaiserslautern focuses on understanding the requirements of the Internet of Things and developing architecture components to address its needs.

Germany: BlackBerry Reinforces Mobile Security Leadership with Acquisition of Secusmart.

BlackBerry bolstered its security credentials with the acquisition of Secusmart, a German provider of “high-security voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping solutions for government organisations, enterprises and telecommunications service providers”.
Financial details were not disclosed.
The companies have already worked together, including a partnership to provide Germany’s Federal office for Information Security with a BlackBerry 10 solution “for classified communications for the country’s highest public officials” – including Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The security of Merkel’s communications came into the spotlight late last year, when it was reported that the US government had been monitoring her calls.
While BlackBerry has already trumpeted the security of its own data platform, the deal will enable it to improve its position with regard to voice calls.
BlackBerry has held a strong position in the enterprise world, in no small part due to its security capabilities, for some time, but is coming under increasing pressure from technologies such as Samsung’s fledgling Knox platform.
The acquisition of Secusmart is an indication that despite its well-publicised woes, it is still investing in areas that are strategically important, supporting its renewed focus on the enterprise market.
Industry analyst Jack Gold said: “If BlackBerry can raise the awareness and get the market, particularly in enterprise and regulated industries, to recognise the need for secure voice and the amount of potential loss, then BB could win big in the market. It will take some effort, but this could be a great channel for BB to grow share.”
Hans-Christoph Quelle, CEO of Secusmart, said: “The secrets of our existing and new customers continue to be reliably secure: the heart of the Secusmart technology is and remains the Crypto-Chip integrated into a standard Micro-SD Card. End-to-end encryption is the only method to protect voice and data communication against third party espionage. As in the past no Secusmart employees will have access to encryption algorithm or the secrets of our clients.”
John Chen, executive chairman and CEO of BlackBerry, said: “The acquisition of Secusmart underscores our focus on addressing growing security costs and threats ranging from individual privacy to national security.”
The transaction is subject to certain conditions, including regulatory approvals.
Press Releases:

BlackBerry Reinforces Mobile Security Leadership with Acquisition of Secusmart

Waterloo, ON – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB), a world leader in mobile communications, has entered into an agreement to acquire Secusmart GmbH, a leader in high-security voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping solutions for government organizations, enterprises and telecommunications service providers in Germany and internationally.
The transaction is subject to the satisfaction of certain customary conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals.
“We are always improving our security solutions to keep up with the growing complexity of enterprise mobility, with devices being used for more critical tasks and to store more critical information, and security attacks becoming more sophisticated,” said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO, BlackBerry. “The acquisition of Secusmart underscores our focus on addressing growing security costs and threats ranging from individual privacy to national security. This acquisition bolsters our security solutions with leading voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping technologies, and furthers BlackBerry’s security leadership in end-to-end mobile solutions.”
BlackBerry and Secusmart have previously partnered to offer Secusmart’s innovative technology to customers that have the most demanding security needs. In fact, last year, the SecuSUITE for BlackBerry® 10 solution was selected by Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security for classified communications for the country’s highest public officials. Through this collaboration, the two companies have provided Secusmart-equipped BlackBerry smartphones to a significant number of German government agencies and almost all German government ministries and leaders, including Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“This transaction is a fantastic opportunity to accelerate growth in the market for high-end secure communications solutions, driven by the need to combat electronic eavesdropping and data theft,” said Dr. Hans-Christoph Quelle, Managing Director of Secusmart. “Secusmart and BlackBerry’s solution already meets the highest security requirements of the German federal authorities and NATO for restricted communications. We see significant opportunities to introduce Secusmart’s solutions to more of BlackBerry’s government and enterprise customers around the world.”
BlackBerry’s acquisition of Secusmart is the latest demonstration of the company’s commitment to being the first name in enterprise mobile security. This commitment is why BlackBerry customers include all G7 governments, 16 of the G20 governments, 10 out of 10 of the largest global enterprises in each of the pharmaceutical, legal and automotive industries, and the five largest oil and gas companies. BlackBerry has more security certifications than any other vendor and is the only mobility solution to receive “Full Operational Capability” (FOC) approval to run on U.S. Department of Defense networks.

Germany: LG to launch webOS Smart TVs in April. Video demo in German.

Francisco De Jesùs.

With the help of our friends on webosnationforums we got some information translated from German to English about the content of the video demo above as follows:

It's the first event of the retailer roadshow in the EMTec Arena in Hamburg. (don't know if it's a roadshow for retailers or at the retailers, but these are no retailer rooms  )

He's watching a trailer on "maxdome" (free and paid streaming portal) and has access to previously seen stuff and the watched movie stops playing in background, after viewing an recently loaded webpage you can resume playing without restarting the streaming app: Multitasking. (but he's rather showing that the stream stopped and kicked back to app main screen, so not a good presentation of this feature).

You can close stuff from your history and navigate "to the future" to see what you could do and then just names the stuff shown: maxdome, Lovefilm, Zatoo (live TV and streaming apps), HDMI, User Manual, "smart share" (nothing detailed said), "Time machine" (just shown, not even named), "Share screen" (just shown, not even named) and then tells again all to be integrated in a multitasking system.

Sizes will be 32" up to 98".

Usual lineup, like the one shown, arriving in April, premium like UltraHD (4k) and OLED devices arrive *from then on until IFA fair in September.

Science: A Diamond from Juina, Brazil, water -rich, holds clues of water deep presence in Earth`s mantle.

A diamond from Juína, Brazil, containing a water-rich inclusion of the olivine mineral ringwoodite. Just 5 millimetres long, this diamond formed in the deep mantle and carries an enclosure of ringwoodite, a mineral never before found in a terrestrial rock.

Pearson and his team studied one such diamond, which weighed 0.09 grams and came from the Juína district in Brazil. As they  examined impurities in it using a light-scattering method known as Raman spectroscopy, they came across something unusual: a grain 40 micrometres across that turned out to be ringwoodite — a high-pressure form of olivine, a mineral that makes up much of the upper mantle. Ringwoodite had previously been found only in meteorites or synthesized in the lab.

A microscopic crystal of a mineral never before seen in a terrestrial rock holds clues to the presence of vast quantities of water deep in Earth’s mantle, scientists report in a paper published today in Nature Journal.

The discovery came from a diamond weighing less than one-tenth of a gram, found in Brazil. Further studies of the sample could help to answer the long-standing question of the origin of the planet's water.

Most diamonds form at depths of about 150 to 200 kilometres, but 'ultradeep' diamonds come from a region of the mantle known as the transition zone, 410 to 660 kilometres below the surface, says Graham Pearson, a mantle geochemist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and the lead author of the study.
Impurities in ultradeep diamonds can be used as probes to study the regions in which the stones formed — and in particular to understand what minerals are present at those depths. Certain minerals have crystal structures that can form only at high pressures or temperatures, or both, and many rearrange themselves into different structures when the pressure is taken off or the temperature goes down. Thus, when the churning of the mantle brings rock towards the surface, some of the minerals that formed at great depths can no longer be found. But if the minerals are trapped inside diamonds, they stay compressed in their original forms. “These high-pressure diamonds give you a window into the deep Earth,” says Pearson.

Rock star

Mineralogical theory and seismic findings had long suggested that ringwoodite is a major component of the transition zone, and the finding backs that up. “It confirms that our ideas of how the mantle is constructed are correct,” says Hans Keppler, a geophysicist at the University of Bayreuth in Germany, who wrote about the find in an accompanying News & Views2.
Unlike better-studied forms of olivine, ringwoodite can hold a substantial amount of water. The sample therefore had the potential to help resolve a long-standing controversy over just how much water the transition zone contains. Using infrared spectroscopy, Pearson’s team found that its tiny fleck of ringwoodite contained about 1% water by weight. “That may not sound like much,” Pearson says, “but when you realize how much ringwoodite there is, the transition zone could hold as much water as all the Earth’s oceans put together.”
But the water content of a single crystal is not necessarily representative of the entire zone, says Norm Sleep, a geophysicist at Stanford University in California. Diamonds are produced by an unusual type of volcanism that is normally associated with water-rich rock, he says. He compares the situation to that of someone panning for gold and finding a large nugget: “It would be unwise to assume that all the gravel in the stream is gold nuggets.”
Pearson agrees. Remote-sensing studies of the mantle have produced conflicting results, suggesting that the water content of the transition zone may be “spotty”, he says. “Our sample appears to come from one of the wet spots.”

Where it all began

There are two theories as to where the mantle's water came from. One is that it was ocean water that was carried deep underground when sea-floor rocks were subducted by plate tectonics. The other is that deeper layers of the Earth still contain water that was part of the materials that formed the Earth.
If the water has been there since Earth formed, its ratio of deuterium to normal hydrogen could be different from that found in sea water today—and closer to the composition of the Earth’s primordial water.  If so, that ratio could provide clues as to whether the water came from asteroids or from comets, says Humberto Campins, an asteroid researcher at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
Pearson sees a value to checking the isotope ratio, but so far his group has been unwilling to do such destructive tests on the only known piece of mantle ringwoodite. “We have to think really carefully on what we do next on this sample because it’s very small: 40 micrometres,” he says. “That means you can only think of doing one or two additional analyses.”

Germany: Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini Swarovski crystal edition, launched.

The revamped handset, currently exclusive to Germany, is decorated with over 100 crystals and is aimed at fashion-conscious German women.

An interesting way of rejuvenating a handset that's already a year old, and which has already been superseded by the Galaxy SIV Mini,

Samsung has teamed up with Swarovski to breathe new life and elegance into its SIII Mini handset.

In all, the smartphone features 166 crystals in a curving wave pattern across the back panel. Other than that, the phone remains untouched, no crystals replacing the homekey or running along the display's sides. And behind the back panel it's the same story. The phone still has the same processor, RAM, screen size, cameras, resolution and operating system as the stock version.
The Galaxy SIII Crystal Edition is on sale now for €299 and for the moment at least is exclusive to German consumers.

Alemania: Leo Rojas, de Ecuador gana el Das Super Talent 2011. Video.

WorldWide tech & Science.
