Electric Vehicles in the Chilean cordillera overcome challenges .

Helmet , pedals and electric batteries. Seven vehicles don`t needed more the peculiar  Zero Challenge race , with which Chile seeks to promote the development of friendly urban transport environment.

The competition began last Friday. Participants toured hard road curves and slopes in Farellones , a town in the mountains of Chile.

The race continued yesterday in the port city of Valparaiso , with the Pacific Ocean beyond , and today continue through the streets of the capital.

One of the cars was dubbed " Vilti " which means falcon in kunza ethnic language , and is powered by electricity and human-powered .

Capsule shaped , upper door on three wheels , the driver drives through a gear lever which features similar to those of a bicycle.

" We want to propose a new alternative transportation, electric and hybrid cars in for one or two people, who are more like a motorcycle , as a new alternative for transport in the city," he told AFP ,Pablo Ahumada , coordinator of  Challenge Zero.

Most of the teams had competed in the first race of solar cars in Latin America , the Atacama Solar Challenge , which Chile hosted last year.

They belong to universities, such as U. Chile, the U. Catholic , or U. Federico Santa María , and resources also support companies to design their vehicles.

Before you begin, the organizers reviewed the cars of each team and their electric batteries sealed with plastic tape that competitors could not recharge during the race.

Also submitted to a blood alcohol test on drivers , who passed smoothly.

At first glance it is hard to imagine this kind of fragile and slow cars through the streets of big cities. But its creators say it will not be long for widespread use .

A total of sustainable seven electric cars   competed today at  cordillera  Los Andes and accomplished the first stage of "Zero Challenge" organized by the NGO Solar Route, which will continue this weekend with circuits in the city of Valparaiso and Santiago.

Scientists warn of possible solar storm in 2014.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Scientists warn of possible solar storm in 2014.

An expert panel found that this phenomenon, more and more common, occur within the next two years and may affect global electrical systems and satellites in orbit.

Usually we are used to understand the concept of "natural disaster" in phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tidal waves and tsunamis. However, a group of NASA scientists warned of an event that is still contingency plans in the world, solar storms.

Solar storms are phenomena which have been heard enough in recent times but could increase with the years.

The panel found that by 2014 the world will face a wave could affect solar electricity systems, communications and satellites around the world.

This could be the biggest event in a cycle of 10 years in the activity of the star and, if filed, would be the first in more than 100 years.

Among the possible consequences that could cause the magnetically charged plasma on earth, is the melting of the electrical transformers in the world, damage satellites and communication systems.

The last solar storm of this magnitude occurred in 1859. At the time, the British astronomer Richard Carrington observed the large solar flare and timed the arrival of geomagnetic storms caused by the phenomenon to Earth with a delay of about 17 hours.

According to reports at the time, the solar storm was so massive that formed northern lights that could be seen much further south than where they usually are.

The question that remains for NASA experts is what the actual impact of a storm of this nature, taking into account the number of satellites in orbit and the effects of their damage globally.

Chile: Astronomers find evidence of dark galaxies.

Astronomers in Chile using a powerful telescope have observed what appears to be evidence of the existence of dark galaxies, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) announced Wednesday.

Dark galaxies are small, gas-rich galaxies from the early universe that are believed to be the building blocks of today's bright, star-filled galaxies, said the ESO, an intergovernmental organization supported by 15 countries.

"For the first time, dark galaxies -- an early phase of galaxy formation, predicted by theory but unobserved until now -- may have been spotted," the ESO said in a statement.

"Using ESO's Very Large Telescope, an international team thinks they have detected these elusive objects by observing them glowing as they are illuminated by a quasar," it said.

The ESO is the most advanced astronomical observatory in the world, and operates three sites in Chile.

The Very Large Telescope (VLT) array -- a cluster of four telescopes that can view objects four billion times fainter than objects visible to the naked eye -- is housed at the ESO's Paranal site in Chile's Atacama Desert.

"Our approach to the problem of detecting a dark galaxy was simply to shine a bright light on it," researcher Simon Lilly said in the release.

"With this study, we've made a crucial step towards revealing and understanding the obscure early stages of galaxy formation and how galaxies acquired their gas," added his colleague, Sebastiano Cantalupo.

The ESO is supported by Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Britain, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
