LTE: Chile: Telefónica (Movistar) Launches Commercial LTE Network Using Samsung Technology.

LTE: Chile: Telefónica (Movistar) Launches Commercial LTE Network Using Samsung Technology.

Samsung’s advanced network solutions deliver commercial LTE services to Latin America

Telefónica Chile (Movistar) announced the commercial availability and of its LTE services throughout Chile. The new mobile network uses Samsung’s advanced and differentiated LTE network solutions, which allows Telefonica in Chile to be able to offer LTE services throughout the country using the latest mobile broadband technology, serving diverse areas that previously lacked high –speed mobile internet access.

This partnership was established between Telefónica and Samsung in February 2013 and it expects to cover over the 95% of the country LTE network, including relevant cities such as Concepción and La Serena. In addition, the two companies will also ensure that 16 of the 20 most populated cities in Chile are covered.

Under the globalization plan for its Networks Business, Samsung has also established an organization, the Technical Support Center based in Santiago, to provide the quickest support for Telefónica Chile’s LTE network and future deployments across Latin America.

"We see the consumer revolution and the need for people to connect to the video is what is moving the Chilean market today. So we opted for 4G technology where video experience is far superior to what customers have seen before. We have a really important coverage in the country and are moving forward to offer most of the country a great 4G LTE service quality, hand in hand with our partnership with Samsung whom we have chosen as a partner due to its expertise and leadership in the world ", explained Roberto Muñoz, Chief Executive Officer of Telefonica in Chile.

“Samsung is delighted to support the launch of Telefónica Chile’s commercial LTE service. The advanced technology built into this network will allow mobile customers to access content and services faster than ever before,” said Youngky Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “This is also a meaningful milestone for Samsung as we look to boost investment and encourage business development in Latin America, one of the fastest growing global mobile markets.”

Samsung is at the forefront of developing and deploying the latest LTE technologies having supported Korean operators to commercialize the world’s first Carrier Aggregation in June 2013 and launch the world’s first Multi-Carrier functionality in 2012.

With over 30 years’ of proven field experience in OFDMA technologies, Samsung is rapidly building successful global partnerships with mobile service providers helping them to implement the most advanced LTE solutions.

Telefónica and Rhapsody International join forces to become a significant global force in digital music.

Telefónica and Rhapsody International join forces to become a significant global force in digital music.

- Deal presents opportunity to expand global footprint of Rhapsody’s Napster music service throughout Latin America and Europe.
- Telefónica’s Terra subsidiary will replace its Sonora music service with Napster, providing customers with access to millions of tracks worth of new musical content for the same price or less.
- Telefónica Digital to gain an equity stake in Rhapsody International.

Telefónica Digital and Rhapsody International today announced a wide-ranging strategic agreement to take a leading place in the fast growing streaming music market. The agreement is one of the largest of its kind in digital music in terms of global reach and customer base. It paves the way for Napster, a Rhapsody owned brand, to enter the Latin America market via the transfer of the hundreds of thousands of existing customers of the Sonora music service. Telefónica, which gains an equity stake in Rhapsody as part of deal, will also now be able to offer bundled Napster music services to its hundreds of millions of subscribers across its global footprint.

The market for streaming music services has exploded in recent years. Rhapsody pioneered this market, introducing the first music subscription model in 2001, and continues to innovate through its product and strategic partnerships.

Napster music service enters Latin America
As part of the agreement, customers of Sonora, the subscription music service provided by Telefónica subsidiary, Terra, will have their music service migrated to Napster from November 1st. Sonora is one of the largest subscription music services in Latin America with customers in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru and Mexico. Starting in Brazil, Terra customers will be offered the opportunity to switch to the Napster music service for the same price or less than they currently pay for Sonora and gain access to millions of new music tracks in the process.

Rhapsody has established an office in Sao Paulo to support this deal and future commercial launches throughout Latin America.

Leading subscription music service to Telefónica customers
With consumers increasingly opting for the convenience and flexibility of subscription-based music services, this partnership enables Telefónica operating businesses in Europe and Latin America to deliver the Napster premium music service, with unlimited access to over 20 million tracks and custom curated editorial content, to their customers across a wide range of mobile and connected devices.  More details of individual product launches will be unveiled by operating businesses closer to commercial launches.

Firefox OS
Following the successful launch of Firefox OS devices in Europe and Latin America, Rhapsody has already delivered a dedicated Napster Music Service for the platform, available to download from the Firefox Marketplace. As Telefónica launches in more markets, including Brazil and three other Latin America countries during Q4, it will look to pre-load Napster on devices sold.

Commenting on the partnership, Stephen Shurrock, CEO of New Business Ventures at Telefónica Digital said, “Whether through the O2 Arenas or services such as Sonora, we have long believed that music is an important way of engaging with customers. As demand for streaming music services takes off, our Rhapsody partnership will allow us to deliver a compelling music proposition to our customers, leveraging Napster’s heritage, brand and strong position in this market.”

“At Rhapsody, we have a rich history of providing music lovers instant, anywhere, anytime access to an unlimited catalog of music,“ said Paul Springer, senior vice president and global head of product for Rhapsody. “We value product innovation and partnerships, and you’ll see both through this Telefonica relationship. As global smartphone usage continues to rise, particularly in Latin America, we are thrilled to put more music in the hands of music fans across the globe.”

Telefónica and NEC start the first virtual customer premises equipment trial in Brazil.

Telefónica and NEC start the first virtual customer premises equipment trial in Brazil

- This CPE solution will bring enormous benefits for the end customer. Its simplicity and capacity to reduce breakdowns and incidents of home equipment provides flexibility, efficient maintenance and new-service rollout capability.

- It represents a new phase of the joint strategy being implemented by the two companies for the development of innovative software- and virtualisation-based network solutions.

NEC Corporation  and Telefónica have today announced an agreement to launch this October the first ever trial in Brazil to virtualise part of the equipment installed on a customer’s premises (vCPE) [1]. Through the telecom provider’s global operating business unit, Telefónica Global Resources, the CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) solution will simplify the home equipment installation process and, by default, Telefónica’s broadband network access and connectivity.

Within the framework of the recent strategic partnership announced by both companies in this field, Telefónica and NEC will bring together their technological capabilities and collaborate in the development of vCPE. The solution, based on a prototype developed by Telefónica I+D, with contributions and integration by NEC, enables certain IP functions to be shifted away from the residential gateways (the equipment installed in the customer’s home) towards the carrier’s own network.

As a result, end users will experience rapid service deployment and improved network operation and maintenance benefits. To achieve this, Telefónica and NEC will be conducting a series of field trials in Brazil, where Telefónica provides broadband access services to millions of homes and businesses with the objective of having a solution ready for deployment  by July of 2014.

As demand for Telefónica’s broadband access services continue to grow, the introduction of the CPE solution will notably enhance and simplify service operation and maintenance by virtualising and moving functions from the equipment installed in the customer’s home to Telefónica’s network.

By minimising dependence on hardware, virtualisation will bring considerable benefits both to the management of the network and to the end user. This means that network management is expected to become easier and more flexible, thereby guaranteeing greater control and security of the consumer electronics connected to the network. It will also reduce any possible incidents and breakdowns. Overall, it will speed up the deployment of new services in the home over the next few years, reduce time to market and enhance the customer’s connectivity experience.

The vCPE forms part of the “NEC Telecom Carrier SDN Solutions”, a portfolio of new and innovative solutions based on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) technologies. This way, NEC combines technologies, products and services that enable the provision of solutions for the further development of the international carrier’s network and business needs.

“NEC is a leader in SDN and NFV solution development, having provided the world’s first commercial SDN product,” said Mr Kazuya Hashimoto, Executive Vice-president, Carrier Solutions EMEA, NEC Europe. “NEC’s vCPE solution provides an open and flexible networking topology that simplifies network management, proactively addresses performance and contributes towards the high availability of Telefónica’s services.”

“Telefónica sees the implementation of SDN and NFV technologies as a factor of our network infrastructure development strategy,” said Mr Enrique Algaba, Director of Network Innovation at Telefónica I+D – Global CTO Unit. “We expect this pilot scheme will help us prove the viability of this technology and enable us to implement rollouts in a more flexible and reliable way coupled with low operating costs.”

Pinterest Partners with Telefónica in exclusive Android deal.

- Exclusive deal to bring advanced Pinterest Widget to millions of Telefónica Android customers throughout Latin America and Europe
- O2 customers in the UK will be the first to benefit, getting exclusive access to the Android Widget.

Telefónica Digital and Pinterest today announced a global partnership to bring Pinterest to millions of Telefonica’s Android customers. As part of the strategic agreement, each Telefónica mobile business, including Vivo, O2 and Movistar, will have the exclusive rights to provide the new Pinterest Android Widget to its customers.

The global partnership will see the Pinterest Android Widget exclusively distributed and available for immediate download on Android devices sold by Telefónica, starting initially in the UK. The Widget, built by Pinterest for the partnership, will be pre-installed on Android devices in participating Telefonica territories. In the UK, it will be featured in O2 Recommends and the Android Widget folder, as well as promoted through multiple channels.

Pinterest is quickly reaching an engaged and global mobile audience. Since January, it’s seen a more than 130% growth in monthly active users from Latin America and the UK. The Widget will bring Pinterest to more people, giving Telefónica subscribers an easy way to access Pinterest from their home screen to discover and pin ideas – such as food, fashion, entertainment, sports, and design - in just one tap.  The customized experience will show most popular pins to new users, and a personal feed and instant notifications for signed-in users. The Widget brings the best, most inspiring content from Pinterest right to the home screen.

“To be the first partner for Pinterest is a huge opportunity and a great testament to Telefónica’s reach, as well as Pinterest’s global ambitions,” Wayne Thorsen, Vice President of Global Partnerships, Telefónica Digital, commented on the partnership. “Our agreement is the foundation of a deeper relationship. As the Pinterest service explodes in popularity, we are now in a position to bring the best possible mobile Pinterest experience to our Android customers around the world.”

“Interests are global, which is why we want Pinterest to be available wherever people want to find ideas for the everyday projects in their lives and get inspired for the future,” said Don Faul, Head of Operations, Pinterest. “Telefónica is one of the world’s most advanced communications companies, and together we can provide a one-of-a-kind mobile experience to new and existing pinners around the globe.”

Pinterest is a tool for visualizing and planning the things you love. People use Pinterest to create wishlists, plan décor for their home, get inspired about places to visit, discover new recipes and more. The standard Pinterest for Android app is one of the highest-rated apps in Google Play, with 4.7 out of 5 stars, and was chosen by Google as one of the best apps of 2012. This new Widget builds upon the already great Pinterest experience for Android.

O2 UK customers will be the first Android users to have access to the Pinterest Widget starting today through Google Play and with preloading starting in the coming weeks. Additional Telefónica businesses will launch the service in due course.

LTE: Brazil: Telefonica to launch LTE services in April 2013.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

LTE: Brazil: Telefonica to launch LTE services in April 2013.

Telefonica’s Brazilian unit plans to launch LTE services in April 2013, according to the CEO of the country’s largest operator.

Outlining the carrier’s aim to upgrade its 3G HSPA network, Paulo Cesar Teixeira told delegates: “We will have 4 cities in April next year and then another 6 nearby cities.” Teixeira said the chosen cities will be those that are scheduled to host World Cup games in 2014.

The LTE service will be branded ‘4G Plus,’ a natural progression from its existing 3G Plus service.

In June this year Telefonica’s Brazilian unit – Vivo – purchased 2x20Mhz chunks of LTE spectrum in the 2.6GHz frequency band. It paid around BRL1.05 billion (US$500 million) for the spectrum. In total the country netted BRL2.72 billion from winnings bids from Vivo, America Movil’s Claro, TIM Brasil and Oi.

Although the largest operator, Vivo may not be first to market with Brazilian LTE services. Number four operator Oi last month outlined plans to achieve 50 percent coverage in seven Brazilian cities also by April 2013.

LTE: Brazil: Vivo and Oi named suppliers for their LTE networks.

Brazilian operators Vivo and Oi have named the suppliers for their LTE networks. Vivo, Telefonica’s subsidiary in the country, has announced that Swedish vendor Ericsson will supply and implement its 4G network in the North and Mid-Western regions of Brazil, as well as the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Sergipe.

Ericsson will also be responsible for network implementation, including network rollout, design and support services. Ericsson has implemented Vivo’s GSM, WCDMA and HSPA technologies in the past.

Rival Oi has also selected Ericsson, along with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Alcatel Lucent for its LTE network, the operator told local reporters according to Reuters. Ericsson said that with these deals it has now signed 89 LTE contracts across 38 countries.

The news follows a report from the GSMA, which claims that mobile services will shape Brazil’s economic future. The country is the fourth largest mobile market in the world with more than 260 million active mobile connections, 60 million of which are mobile broadband, according to the association.
