LG Chem and Samsung SDI working together to put in an AUDI EV a 500KMS drive range w/ a single charge battery.

Exterior sketch of the Audi e-tron quattro

Audi, together with LG Chem and Samsug SDI korean battery makers, aims to take on Tesla with its new full-electric sport utility vehicle that drives 500 kilometers in a single charge.

Audi is set to unveil a preview of the e-front quattro concept at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

The company plans to start the production of the car in 2018 as its first mainstream electric car.

The car's 500-kilometer driving range is more than triple that of other mass-market EVs on the market. Except Tesla's Model S sedan that drives 420 to 560 kilometers depending on trims, top-selling cars like Nissan Leaf and BMW i3 drive some 160 when fully charged kilometers.  The Audi EV's key RIVAL is expected to be Tesla's new Model X SUV, which is scheduled to hit the market next month.

Tha car`s driving range is also 500 kilometers. In a rare partnership, LG Chem and Samsung SDI, two of the world`s top three battery makers along with Jpan`s Panasonic, have teamed up to develop big storages batteries for the Audi project.

The two companies declined to elaborate on how they work together and who would take the lead in the whole development process.

"An EV with a 500 kilometer driving range is a revolution that would help jump-start the still nascent EV market" industrial said.

"And this is also a competition between the two battery makers. They would try to show off their battery prowess and appeal to other global carmakers for future deals.

"The two companies have poured resources for years into developing smaller but higher capacity batteries for electric cars, because an electric car's driving range is largely dependent on battery size.

Samsung SDI is the sole supplier for BMW's first full-electric car i3 as well as the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, while LG Chem is supplying EV batteries to carmakers like GM, Ford, Daimler and Volvo.

According to the research firm B3, the world's electric car market is expected to surge from this year's 2.3 million cars to 6 million by 2020. During the same period, the market for EV batteries is projected to more than triple from $ 6 billion to $ 21.1 billion, the firm said .

Electric Car invasion in Ecuador.

At least six automotive brands keep models of electric vehicles on display or in testing stage, in the country. However, the marketing of cars is waiting for the installation of infrastructure such as charging stations (points of battery power charging) as well as increased incentives to potential buyers. In Ecuador, the brands involved in this segment are: Nissan, Renault, Toyota, Green Wheel, Kia and Byd. Early last month, the National Public Procurement (Sercop) presented the catalog of electric cars to the public sector entities to  acquire these vehicles. These cars also be exempt from tariffs, are free of quotas.

Diego Andrade, national director of Nissan, indicates that this brand leads the sale of electric vehicles worldwide. So Nissan brought to the country the Leaf model that can travel 160 kilometers without requiring a new load. The cost of this model range between USD 40 000 and 45 000. Andrade indicates that besides the strong momentum that the Government seeks incentive tariffs and other definitions as the possibility of a subsidy, which do not apply the expected peak and plate , preferential enrollment rates plus parking spaces and mobility with more advantages than other vehicles. It should also analyze a strengthening of electricity networks to allow multiple users to simultaneously charge the battery in addition to the implementation of charging stations for semifast load (one to two hours) or fast (in 30 minutes).

This is because, for example, a vehicle such as Leaf needs 13 hours to charge at a voltage of 110 volts (V) and three hours at 220 V. Therefore, evaluation is still in the pattern before being marketed so that wait until 2016 for that.

Another brand that is already in the country models of electric vehicles is the Renault Twizy has the car (for two people) and Kangoo (a van that can be adapted to transfer passengers). Luis De los Reyes, national director of Renault, said that there is great opportunity for the political decision of the government to support this technology. Indicates that the model Twizy price is USD 17 000 while the Kangoo reaches USD 35 000.

Any customer's can acquire, but has not yet made a massive advertising campaign because government incentives are expected and that the company has more familiarity with the technology.

Another dealer to have models of electric cars is Ambacar, company that sells Chinese cars. Jaime Guarderas, representative of the firm, explains that  two years ago two models of the brand Green Wheel of China were imported to test  These vehicles are being tested at the Technology Transfer Center for Training and Research on Vehicle Emissions Control (Ccice) National Polytechnic.

After this process, Guarderas explains that it can examine whether imported or assembled in the country in about two years. Gerardo Velasco, adviser of the brand, points out that this vehicle would pay around USD 0.80 energy, for a distance of 40 kilometers. That is, some USD 5.6 USD weekly versus about $8.4 for the same distance in a similar vehicle with extra gas.

Ccice director, Angel Portilla, indicates that so far in the center where vehicles approvals for import and sale becomes, no model has entered the process except Green Wheel. Another brand that has imported another car is Toyota who are testing the model Coms.

Luis Baca, commercial director of the mark indicates that delayed its introduction because it must create a  import numered section and strengthened networks for charging.

Two other brands announced the marketing of electric models were Kia and Byd but did not respond to inquiries from El Comercio newspaper.

NANICO Electric mini-car to take on Sao Paulo traffic nightmare.

Finding a parking spot in Sao Paulo can be a nightmare. But for car designer Caio Strumiello -- that nightmare has been an inspiration. This is Nanico, the smallest car in Brazil. These days parking is a breeze.

NANICO CREATOR, CAIO STRUMIELLO, : "When it comes to parking regular cars are stuck looking for a free parking space while I park my car in between spaces. Inside Sao Paulo you have nothing better because there isn't any space, you cant travel at higher speeds, and yet you have cars that keep getting bigger because people believe that a big car gives you status." Strumiello says what big cars really give their owners is less money and a slower commute. Currently Nanico is gas powered - capable of more than 80 miles per gallon, a fraction of the fuel used in most conventional cars. But Strumiello and his partner Paulo Roberto Da Conceicao are going a step further, changing out Nanico's combustion engine for an electric motor that runs on solar powered batteries.

NANICO TECHNOLOGY PARTNER, PAULO ROBERTO DA CONCEICAO, : "We are installing a motor that will technically have seven kilowatts of potential which is sufficient to travel at a speed of 70 kilometres per hour, which is the speed limit here greater Sao Paulo, and you will be able to charge it in six hours with solar batteries."

The team plan to provide buyers of electric Nanico's with solar panels to charge the cars batteries. Strumiello plans to unveil their creation at a car show in Sao Paulo next month. He says his biggest challenge going forward will be persuading status and comfort conscious consumers to give up on their big cars.

NANICO CREATOR, CAIO STRUMIELLO, : "Now what is important is people make themselves aware that we have to let go of this idea of extreme comfort in favour of society. This is what is difficult. If we can conquer this mentality it will make things better, much better." ...better for the environment and a possible solution to traffic congestion. Strumiello says he is confident that his tiny car is about to make a very big impact on the streets of his city.

Andy Palmer, chief planning officer and executive vice president of Nissan Motor Co., and Takao Katagiri, another executive vice president, present the e-NV200 electric van in Yokohama on Monday ahead of its launch in Europe this month and in Japan in October. | KYODO

Nissan Motor Co. said Monday it will launch its first all-electric commercial-use vehicle in October.

“While our competitors are coming to market with their first electric vehicle, we’re breaking convention once again by expanding and diversifying our lineup with a second all-electric vehicle,” said Chief Planning Officer Andy Palmer at the rollout in Yokohama.
The new e-NV200 commercial vehicle is the second mass-market all-electric vehicle after the Leaf, which has sold more than 119,000 units globally since it debuted in December 2010, the carmaker said.
“Nissan is committed to the complete elimination of emissions from cars, not partial improvements such as those achieved simply by clean diesel or hybridization. We believe the ultimate goal is zero,” Palmer said.
The e-NV200, which started rolling off production lines at Nissan’s plant in Barcelona, Spain, in May, will be exported to Japan and go on sale in Europe this month, the Yokohama-based company said.
“Electric vehicles are good contenders in the commercial vehicle arena, considering commercial vehicles have limited needs, including running distance .
Electric cars have high potential in this field,” Executive Vice President Takao Katagiri said at the rollout.
The battery-powered vehicle, which is based on the Nissan’s multipurpose commercial van, the NV200, can go around 190 km on a full charge, the automaker said.
Nissan has set a domestic sales target of 500 units per month for the e-NV200, which comes in several versions, including 5- and 7-seat wagons that can be used as private vehicles. The price ranges from almost ¥3.9 million to just below ¥4.8 million, including consumption tax.
The e-NV200 comes with two 100-volt power outlets, one below the dashboard and the other in the cargo area. These can draw up to 1,500 watts of power from the battery, Nissan said, adding they might become handy power sources for “off-site jobs or events, or in case of an emergency.”

Video: Is Apple-Tesla iCar next?

Apple is reportedly considering getting into electric cars and medical devices as sales of smartphones and tablets begin to slow.

Francisco De Jesùs.

Like its old ad slogan, Apple may be really thinking different --- thinking about even cars and heart monitors.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Apple's M&A chief met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk last spring at Apple's headquarters.

Citing a source, it says the meeting suggests Apple was interested in buying the electronic car maker - a topic widely rumored among investors. It speculates a partnership between the two could produce an Apple touchscreen on Tesla's dashboards. And Apple's looking at making medical inroads as well.

The Chronicle says Apple is looking into mobile applications that could predict heart attacks by identifying the sound blood makes as it moves through a clogged artery. Investors hearting that news. Tesla's stock continued its mercurial climb, rising sharply at the start of trade. Apple, which is down slightly this year, was trading higher.

If the report proves true, Apple is thinking well beyond the rumored iWatches and iTVs as sales of smartphones and tablets start to slow.

Video: Folding electric micro car demo - Armadillo-T by KAIST.

KAIST, the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology who revealed a folding electric vehicle prototype like the Hiriko designed by MIT and currently developed by a European consortium. Named Armadillo-T the micro-vehicle receives four in-wheel motors and a 13.6kWh battery for a total weight up to 500kg, allowing it to reach a speed of 60kph with a range of around 100km.

Final details, its doors open in gull-wing and mirrors give way to a camera.

The Armadillo-T is a first prototype and the team that developed the car says that the road to commercialization is still long...

With a maximum speed of 37 mph, the Armadillo-T can travel 62 miles after 10 minutes of lithium ion battery charging. After parking, the car can be folded in length from 110 inches down to almost half, 65 inches, via a smartphone interface. To save space, cameras replace the side and rear-view mirrors. According to the Korean Wall Street Journal, three Armadillo-Ts can be slotted into a standard sized parking lot in Korea after folding, using the same smartphone application.

Germany: World's first electric car hits the road after 130 years. Video.

WorldWide Tech & SCience. Francisco De Jesús.

The latest in electric-powered cars are being unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show this month but the vehicle that started it all is making a debut of its own in Germany. Engineers at a private museum near the city of Speyer, have recreated a working version of the world's first electric car, originally presented 130 years ago by two Englishmen, William Ayrton and John Perry.

The BMWi and the Chevy Volt represent the latest in electric-powered vehicle technology, but neither of these cars might exist were it not for the 1881 invention of Englishmen William Ayrton and John Perry...now on the road again in the town of Altlussheim, Germany. Ayrton and Perry's electric-powered vehicle is recognised as the world's first roadworthy car and Horst Schultz, owner of the Autovision car museum has recreated it to celebrate 130 years of automobility. While it's a relatively simple machine, Schultz says replicating it was not easy.

HORST SCHULTZ, OWNER OF MUSEUM AUTOVISION, SAYING: "It took, overall, around about nine months to finalise this vehicle and the biggest challenge to us was to recreate this after two, only two existing technical drawings." Those drawings gave Schultz and his team an approximate idea of the technology used at the time but, with no surviving model to copy, the work was painstaking It took some guesswork, trial and error, but the finshed vehicle is an impressive example of 19th century engineering. The car is powered by a small electric motor and a bank of 54 volt batteries located beneath the seat - a converted antique baroque table.

The motor drives a chain attached to the front wheels, while steering is controlled by a hand crank connected to the smaller rear wheel. Thrust is produced with gear shifts that trigger additional batteries to switch on. The original vehicle had a range of 50 kilometres but at that point, the batteries ran down...an endurance problem that plagues electric vehicles even today.

HORST SCHULTZ, OWNER OF MUSEUM AUTOVISION, SAYING: "As far as I can see, the battery is the main problem. The same problem as 130 years ago. The battery contains too less energy to give us the same distance as a petrol car. The battery is too heavy, too large compared with the petrol car." But the world's manufacturers say the technology is improving. Little could Ayrton and Perry have imagined how far their 19th century idea would travel.

Jaguar's C-X75 Concept: A 205MPH Electric Supercar | Popular Science

Jaguar's C-X75 Concept: A 205MPH Electric Supercar | Popular Science

Happy 75th birthday to British automaker Jaguar! As a birthday present, they've actually given ussomething new to drool over: A 780 hp mostly-electric supercar capable of hitting 250 mph with a whopping 500-mile range, all wrapped in a body inspired by the 1966 XJ13, the car the chief designer calls "possibly the most beautiful Jaguar ever made."

Unveiled at this year's Paris Auto Show, the Jaguar C-X75 is a vision of the future, perhaps a decade or two from now, when high-efficiency, ridiculously high-powered electric cars are possible. The C-X75 is a hybrid, relying on four electric motors (one per wheel) rated at 195 hp each. Powered by a (one assumes absolutely massive) lithium ion battery pack, Jaguar says the two-seater car can get to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds, with a range of about 68 miles.
The battery works in pretty much the same way as other mostly-electric vehicles like Chevy's upcoming Volt. The car is powered exclusively by battery for the first 68 miles (the Volt gets about 40 miles, for comparison) and is then boosted by two small gas turbines. These turbines provide about 94 hp each, for a range of about 500 additional miles (the Volt's teeny gas engine nets about 300 extra miles). Those turbines work independently and can refill the electric batteries as well.
The interior is luxurious as well, featuring a new series of touchscreens and a speaker system that relies on transducers that line the walls and ceiling, supposedly to compete more effectively with the giant noisy engines right behind the seats.
Of course, the C-X75 is just a concept--I doubt the quoted stats are even possible with today's tech, considering they outpace by a large margin the capabilities of modern hybrids and EVs--but usable, practical ideas could absolutely spring from it. Here's hoping we get to drive something like this one of these days.
