Motorola cuts Xoom prices in the US and Taiwan. More tablets vendors to cut prices.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Motorola Mobility has lowered the price of its 32GB Wi-Fi-enabled Xoom tablet PCs for sale in the US from US$599 to US$499 and in the Taiwan market from NT$19,800 (NT$687) to NT$16,900.

Motorola's price reduction comes after rival Asustek Computer launched its entry-level Eee Pad Transformer tablet PCs in the US market in May for just US$399, according to industry sources.

More tablet vendors are likely to cut their product prices prior to the launch of iPad 3 and Google's next-generation Ice Cream Sandwich tablets to avoid the piling-up of old models, the sources commented.

Acer is likely to be forced to lower prices of Iconia tablet PCs in August in order to fulfill its goal to ship 2.5 million tablets in 2011, noted the sources, adding that Acer's tablet PC shipments could have been below 300,000 units for the year so far.

Toshiba is also expected to reduce the price of its Android 3.0-based AT100 tablets in the Taiwan market after August, added the sources. The AT100 is currently available at NT$18,800.

The 32 GB Xoom WiFi, which is price equivalent to Apple's new WiFi-only, 32 GB iPad 2, will also be available to commercial IT channels and regional retailers through a distribution agreement with Synnex Corporation, and regional carriers through Brightpoint, Motorola said.

The 10.1-inch Xoom is the first slate based on Google's Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" operating system, a tablet-tailored flavor of the platform popularized on smartphones. Powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor, the slate offers dual cameras and user interface perks on a 1280-by-800 HD display.

Speed Battle. iPad2 vs Motorola XOOM

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

CNET has made this speed test video below between the iPad2 and the Motorola XOOM.

The Motorola XOOM has a NVidia Tegra 2, 1GHZ dual core cpu with 1GB RAM and the Ipad 2 an A5  1GHZ dual core with 512 MB RAM

The XOOM seems faster than the iPad 2 but on the last web site loading page was very close to the XOOM.

However the XOOM won 3 of 3 over the iPad 2.

The HP TouchPad has a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-CPU APQ8060 1.2GHz with 1GB RAM, which means can be faster than both.

Flash Adobe player 10.2 beta for Motorola XOOM available on March 18th.

WorldWideTech & Science.  Francisco De Jesús.

Press Release:

Today we are happy to announce that Flash Player 10.2 will be available for download via Android Market on March 18th.  Flash Player 10.2 is a production GA (General Availability) release for Android 2.2 (Froyo) and 2.3 (Gingerbread) devices which meet the Flash Player hardware system requirements.  It is initially a beta release for Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablets which requires Google’s 3.0.1 system update.

We have been working very closely with Google to ensure tight integration between Flash Player 10.2 and new OS and browser capabilities in Android 3.0.  The March 18th beta release of Flash Player 10.2 in conjunction with Google’s first system update to Android 3.0  (version 3.0.1) currently underway for the MOTOROLA XOOM™ will deliver the first phase of our work together.  This will be followed by subsequent updates, which will complete the optimizations and result in a production GA release of Flash Player 10.2 for Android 3.0.

Some of the new capabilities of Flash Player 10.2 for Android include:

Hardware accelerated video presentation for H.264 (Android 3.0.1+ only)
Flash Player 10.2 leverages the Stage Video rendering pipeline to enable users of Android 3.0 tablets, like the MOTOROLA XOOM™, to enjoy smooth playback of high-definition Flash video content on the web.   Users will experience reduced CPU usage and higher frame rates for existing H.264 video content.

Deeper integration with the Android browser rendering engine (Android 3.0.1+ only)

Deeper integration of Flash Player and the enhanced Android 3.0 browser delivers faster and better rendering of rich, interactive web content resulting in a browsing experience similar to the desktop.
Flash Player can now render content as part of the web page along with other components such as HTML, images and gif animation. As a result, users will experience:
  • Improved scrolling of web pages;
  • Uncompromised viewing of rich, immersive content in the way intended by the page designer, including support for instances where HTML and other web content is composited over Flash Player rendered content.  Flash Player rendered content will continue to be placed in a separate window on top of HTML in the Android 2.2 and 2.3 browsers, as these browsers do not support the new Android 3.0 browser rendering model.
Enhanced performance for the latest smartphones and tablets
Experience performance improvements designed to take advantage of the current generation of multi-core, GPU-enabled processors to deliver Flash videos, games and other interactive Web content on the latest smartphones and tablets.  For a list of upcoming Flash-enabled devices which show off the latest performance improvements, including the MOTOROLA ATRIX™ 4G, MOTOROLA XOOM™ and LG Optimus 2X, please click here.

Automatic soft keyboard support
Users of touch screen devices will enjoy a more optimized experience interacting with rich content that requires keyboard input.  This feature simplifies the development of multiscreen applications that require keyboard input, making it easier for developers to optimize desktop applications for mobile devices. A new ActionScript API enables developers to automatically launch and display the soft keyboard.

In addition to its availability on Android Market, the production GA release of Flash Player 10.2 will also be available pre-installed on many upcoming tablets and smartphones or delivered as an over-the-air (OTA) update to existing devices in market.

MWC 2011 :Motorola XOMM, HP Touchpad, Blackberry Playbook, MeeGo OS. BBC UK makes a short walk through to most prominent tablets PCs at Mobile Congress 2011 in Barcelona.

The Motorola XOOM looks a nice live widgets and a better Youtube experience. A device with no buttons around the frame.

You can see a very much improved tab to share feature on the HP TouchPad  when the Pre3 url site loaded very fast compared to before demos.

One thing I noticed on the BB Playbook is now the flip out card swipe. It looks very much almost a full replicate of HP webOS, The difference is the 3G connection between the BB Playbook and the BB Torch smartphone made  on the  email push, field always where BB is specialized.

SwiftKey TouchType keyboard app ready update for Android Tablets. Demo on the Motorola XOOM. Video.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

SwiftKey TouchType  keyboard app ready update for Android Tablets. Demo on the Motorola XOOM. Video.

TouchType has now transferred its touchscreen typing smarts from smartphones to the big screen, bigger than a smartphone anyway. The company has launched a new tablet version of its SwiftKey typing app to coincide with the release of Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and the launch of the Xoom tablet from Motorola. The app is claimed to make touchscreen typing more intuitive thanks to an improved version of the Fluency predictive text engine and easier thanks to optimized keyboard layouts and multi-language support.

Touch Type says that it has worked closely with Google to try and make the most of the search giant's new tablet-centric flavor of Android, named Honeycomb. The SwiftKey for Tablet app benefits from a major redesign of the Fluency prediction engine which applies patent-pending AI technology to offer next-word prediction before a single character is entered. It also has advanced learning algorithms and the ability to analyze online profiles in such things as Facebook, Gmail and Twitter to help personalize the typing experience to individual writing styles.

The next word prediction can be customized to cater for users who wish to select each suggestion or those who just want to trust the system and get an online update out as quickly as possible. There's also multi-lingual inline spelling, grammar and mistype correction which uses a context sensitive approach that is based on "real-time analysis of user-adapted probability distributions."

Ready to Xoom
TouchType has also worked with Motorola to develop the app for use on the first product to sport Honeycomb, the Xoom tablet. It's said to make full use of Xoom's processor and memory to automatically determine the input language without the need for manual selection. Keyboard layouts have been optimized for easy two handed thumb input while holding the tablet and multiple keyboard layouts are supported, including QWERTY, AZERTY and QWERTZ.

The new high definition, "holographic" themed, tablet-optimized, multi-touch version of SwiftKey is claimed to result in up to 50 per cent greater text entry efficiency than other products on the market. It also allows for voice dictation in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian and caters for custom skinning to add a personal touch to the interface.

SwiftKey for Tablet is currently available for download for a limited sale price of US$1.99 from the Android Market.

Motorola XOOM to launch Feb 2011. HTC, RIM, Samsung, LG tablets March. Toshiba, Acer, Asustek April or May.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Motorola is set to sell its 10.1-inch Android 3.0 tablet PC Xoom as early as February 2011 with the rest of its competitors to start launching their Android 3.0 models after March.

As Google is sending invitations to global media announcing the release date of Android 3.0, iPad-like products are expected to start showing up lead by Motorola.

Since the rest of the PC and smartphone vendors will still take a while to adjust their related settings to allow their machines to run Android 3.0 after it releases, Motorola is expected to have about a month head-start to fully push its Xoom sales.

High Tech Computer (HTC), RIM, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics may need to wait until after March to release their tablet PCs, while PC players such as Acer, Asustek Computer, and Toshiba may even delay to after April or May. To maintain their market position, some vendors plan to launch a small volume of Android 2.3-based models, while some will launch Wintel-based models.

According to the latest Verizon tweets apparently HTC is going to re-launch their Chocolate line with a 4G Smartphone for Verizon.

Motorola  is confirmed since  October 2010 The company had previously said that it will offer smartphones for its just-launched next-generation mobile data network but it hadn’t named a handset maker. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon Wireless COO John Stratton gave Motorola a shoutout.
“We’ve got LTE smartphones on the horizon,” Stratton said. “Motorola will be right there.”

CANADIAN TRADE-MARK DATA

Motorola has been quietly registering the "Xoom" trademark in what may be prep for its Honeycomb-based Android tablet. Trademarks have been filed in Canada, Europe and the US for the same name since mid-October. Elsewhere in the world, the trademark is often one of few if not the only English trademarks in a given area, such as New Zealand and Taiwan.

The descriptions when applicable cover both "tablets" and "mobile computers" as well as accessories that would be more appropriate for a tablet, such as cradles, docks and covers.

If one and the same with the Motorola tablet seen so far, it would have a 10-inch 1280x800 display, a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 512MB of RAM, rear five-megapixel and front 1.3-megapixel cameras and 32GB of storage. Versions around the world will have 3G and Wi-Fi, and the known Verizon edition is likely to have 4G using LTE. Honeycomb, known as Android 3.0 or possibly 2.4, will give it the first true tablet-native interface from Google.
