Asahi Kasei Electronics exhibited a CO2 sensing module that demonstrated the capabilities of its IR10100 ultra-miniature infrared sensor. Conventional infrared sensors require cooling but the IR10100 does not and at just 2.7mm x 1.9mm x 0.4mm in size (H/W/D), this ultra-miniature sensor promises a number of practical applications. The company demonstrated this sensor's ability to detect CO2, by using a novel exhibit centered on a "tree" that changes colors.
A new type of non-cooled infrared sensor
Conventional non-cooled heat sensors were typically slow to respond, but these quantum-type sensors have excellent response characteristics in addition to their unique non-cooling advantage. The IR10100 is the first non-cooled quantum-type sensor that can be applied to a wide range of applications. For example, their compact size means they can be mounted on the outer surface of notebook PCs and employed to detect the presence of users. This means it is now possible to mount the sensors in places previously unavailable to detect the presence of users such as for power shutdown sensors. The infrared measurement capabilities of this device also mean it can be used as a non-contact thermometer.
