Fujifilm has unveiled two GPS-enabled digital cameras at the CES trade show last week: the Fujifilm FinePix F550 EXR ($349) and FinePix XP30 ($229).
The FinePix F550 EXR has a 16 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor, high speed shooting capabilities, a 15x wide-angle zoom lens and Full HD movie functionality. The FinePix XP30 has 14.2 megapixel resolution with a 5 times wide zoom with optical image stabilization. It is a waterproof, shock proof device made for outdoor use.
Both devices geo-tag images displaying them either as longitude and latitude or by place name thanks to a database of half a million POIs (worldwide from NAVTEQ and Japanese from Zenrin).embedded in the camera's
These two cameras also have a “Photo Navigation” function, where you can find your way back to where a photo was taken. For example, if you took a shot at a restaurant that you'd like to return to, simply find the picture and the FinePix F550 EXR will provide the distance and direction you need to travel from your existing location to get back there.
Last but not least, the “Route Logging” function stores location data every 10 minutes (in a particular standby mode) and, once the images are downloaded to a PC through MyFinePix Studio (bundled image viewing software), a map of the route, along with the pictures you took along the way is created using Google Maps. To provide that functionality Fujifilm is likely to be using a low power GPS chipset such as SIRF StarIV.
