Hewlett-Packard (HP) has switched some of its netbook orders for the second half of 2011 placed with EMS firm Flextronics International back to Quanta Computer. Quanta is expected to see its netbook shipments begin gaining momentum in May, said industry sources.
HP shipped a total of 39 million notebooks in 2010, with netbooks accounting for 10%-15% of total shipments and major contract makers included Quanta, Foxconn Electronics, Flextronics and Inventec.
HP began to release more netbook orders to Foxconn and Flextronics in the second quarter of 2010 with monthly orders to the two firms reaching 200,000 units, while its orders to Quanta were reduced, the sources indicated.
HP's netbook orders to Quanta would be less than 100,000 units a quarter in 2011 if HP did not switch some Flextronics' orders back, the sources said.
HP is expected to ship about 500,000-700,000 netbooks in the first quarter of 2011 and will begin to ship new netbooks from Quanta starting May, noted the sources.
