Press Release:
STYLISTIC Q550 combines highest levels of enterprise security with benefits of multiple touch computing

Tokyo, February 24, 2011 — Fujitsu today announced the global launch of the STYLISTIC Q550, a business-class slate PC designed for the high-security requirements of mobile enterprise computing, starting in early April 2011.

Building on Fujitsu's long heritage of creating tablet PCs for professional and business users, the Fujitsu STYLISTIC Q550 slate PC builds in security from the ground up, so that it meets the most stringent ICT security requirements of governments and businesses. The Fujitsu STYLISTIC Q550 is developed to meet enterprise mobile computing demands and integrate seamlessly into existing ICT infrastructures.

As enterprises struggle to keep consumer smartphones and tablets off their corporate networks to avoid security breaches, Fujitsu is taking an alternative approach with the introduction of a companion device designed for maximum interoperability with business environments. Seamless integration is provided thanks to use of the Microsoft Windows® 7 operating system. Additional licensing and rollout costs are capped since the slate PC uses the same software already deployed in enterprise infrastructures.

Usability features also help set the Fujitsu slate PC apart from other mobile devices. The STYLISTIC Q550 is distinguished by elements such as full work day battery runtime and a brilliant anti-glare 10.1-inch screen that allows for use both indoors and outdoors. Seamless connectivity comes through the inclusion of WLAN, Bluetooth and optional mobile broadband 3G/UMTS, enabling collaboration such as the sharing of documents while on the move.

Along with excellent ergonomics, Fujitsu makes mobile data entry easier by combining a multiple touch interface with precise and pressure-sensitive pen input. The STYLISTIC Q550 automatically recognizes when users are working with a pen, allowing them to rest their hand on the screen when writing. Built-in handwriting recognition software converts input to text. When the pen is not in use, the slate PC automatically readjusts to a touch interface.

Since 1991, Fujitsu has pursued the global expansion of tablet PC portfolio with an emphasis on the North American market. Currently, it holds the second-largest market share in North America(1).

Fujitsu is offering the STYLISTIC Q550 as a ubiquitous terminal that can be utilized safely and securely in all business scenarios, while at the same time accommodating advancements in enterprise system environments, including rapidly accelerating communications environments and cloud computing.

"Microsoft welcomes the release of the STYLISTIC Q550," says Steven Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President of the OEM Division, Microsoft Corporation. "Windows® 7 is a great choice for commercial customers looking for a devices that enables the flexibility and mobility their businesses need to succeed. With Windows® 7, you get enterprise manageability, security, as well as the ability to run the applications used within organizations."

"The STYLISTIC Q550 delivers low power and performance with the upcoming Intel Atom processor, codenamed 'Oak Trail'" said Doug Davis, vice president and general manager of the Netbook and Tablet Group, Intel. "Atom processors help provides business users a seamless, rich multi-tasking experience with PC-like functionality and all day battery life for professionals on the move."

To accommodate the full range of business scenarios in which customers operate, Fujitsu will continue to introduce new ways for customers to leverage cloud computing and other corporate ICT systems to enhance their businesses.

Features of the STYLISTIC Q550
1. Usability and user experience - effortless and intuitive operability via touch or pen input
The STYLISTIC Q550 runs on Microsoft Windows® 7 and is compatible with Windows®' multi-touch capabilities. Users can control applications and input text by touching the screen simply with just a touch of their fingers or by the attached stylus.

By making full use of Fujitsu's proprietary power supply control functionality, the new series provides effortless operations using a large-capacity battery that can power the slate PC's 10.1 inch screen while still lasting approximately 10 hours(2). Furthermore in terms of maintenance, the battery is removable. The overall unit weighs only 690g when a standard battery is inserted(3).

The STYLISTIC Q550 employs an ergonomic design, with a surface texture and weight balance that make it fit naturally in the user's hand.

The STYLISTIC Q550 can connect to IEEE 802.11n/a/g-compatible wireless LANs and wireless WANs(4), thereby enabling high-speed network communications. This in turn, makes data communications in a cloud computing environment effortless and helps to facilitate smooth business operations.

3. Security and manageability - highly compatible with existing ICT systems, features advanced security
As the STYLISTIC Q550 runs on Microsoft Windows® 7, customers can deploy the slate PC without having to make changes to existing Windows®-environment security resources and operations management systems. Moreover, through its unique product design process, Fujitsu has engineered the slate PC to incorporate a variety of technologies—such as fingerprint authentication, smart card reader, embedded security chip(5), and encrypted SSD—that enable the development of even more robust security systems, an important feature for enterprise customers.

UK: HTC Desire new Top Smartphone. Iphone 4 no longer on the top list?

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Apple's iPhone is no longer one of the top six most popular mobile phones in the U.K., according to uSwitch

According to the comparison site's Mobile Tracker, which ranks the nation's favorite handsets based on live searches and sales, the HTC Desire in the UK's favorite smartphone, closely followed by the HTC Desire HD and the HTC Wildfire.

The Blackberry Curve 8520 is in fourth place, while Samsung´s galaxy S takes the final position in the UK's top five favorite handsets. Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone 4 is no longer on the list, the iPad wi-fi 3G version took his place.

"Android phones have well and truly pipped Apple to the post. But, with just a couple of months until Apple is expected to give details of its next offering, it's almost a dead cert that they will soon lead the way again in the race for smartphone dominance," Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch.com.

"With over 800,000 deals currently giving away a smartphone for free, it's easy to see how consumers are being lured away from the iPhone. Many have to account for every penny spent, but at the same time do not want to miss out on owning the latest gadget. A free handset is a much more attractive proposition than shelling out for one - especially at iPhone prices."

China Unicom announces six vendors for Wophone OS-based devices

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

China Unicom has announced six vendors which will offer devices based on its new Wophone operating system.

The vendors are Samsung, HTC, Motorola Mobility, Huawei, ZTE and TCL. The operator said the launch of the devices is imminent but did not provide any more detail, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

The operator said at the GSMA Mobile Asia Congress last November it would launch handsets based on its own OS (then known as Uphone rather than Wophone) by the end of 2010, as reported by Mobile Business Briefing. Clearly the operator’s plans for Wophone are running behind schedule, judging from the timing of the current announcement on vendors.

Few specific details about the Wophone OS are available from China Unicom, although it is known to be Linux-based but not Android, the operator has stipulated. Larger rival China Mobile developed its own OS prior to China Unicom, the similar-sounding Ophone, which is a variation on Android. China Unicom’s OS was originally known as Uphone but the name was changed to Wophone to link with its Wo 3G brand.

Apple loves Android´s “dot” gesture lock screen feature.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Apple has been working on a new gesture-based lock screen for iOS devices that works similarly to Android’s “dots” lock screen feature. The user sets up a pattern and needs to input that same pattern in, instead of a password or a four number code. Apple has already deployed this new lock screen internally for use in the employee ‘Apple Connect’ application for iOS devices.
There is no word on whether or not this new lock screen will make its way to iOS devices for users. We were told, though, that Apple will be pushing this lock screen down to some of their internal applications in the future. For example the applications retail-store employees use.
Apple is even planning on bringing this down to their new mobile payment system business, on the EasyPay machines. The lock screen looks just like Android’s lock screen, which Google probably has patents on, so this might never see the fingers of consumers. Three more screenshots of the system are after the break.

CeBIT 2011: MiTAC shows new Android tablets.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Germany with Taiwan's MiTAC first off the starting line with four new tablets heading for the show. Hoping to capitalize on the success of last year's award-winning Valinor media tablet, the company has announced a couple of media tablets, a rugged model and one featuring two GPS receivers.

While it's doubtful that the two Valar media tablets about to get a showing in Germany will have quite the same impact on the world as their Ainur namesakes, you will at least be able to watch movies like the Lord of the Rings trilogy in full 1080p high definition on the displays themselves or on a big screen TV via HDMI-out.

They benefit from a 1GHz Cortex processor, Android 2.3 with MiTAC overlay, a front-facing 1.3 megapixel webcam and a 5-megapixel camera with flash at the rear. The Valar 7, as you might expect, features a 7-inch touchscreen display while the Valar 10 has a 10-inch high definition widescreen display. Both units come with built-in GPS, with support for location-based services such as Google Maps or turn-by-turn navigation.

Continuing the Tolkien theme, the Ulmo is the tough member of the new quartet, being IPX7 waterproof and drop resistant. Its 7-inch touchscreen display is also capable of full 1080p high definition playback and there's also HDMI connectivity and stereo speakers.

Naming inspiration takes a Greek holiday for the Zeus 6-inch tablet, which has dual GPS receivers to help ensure a strong GPS signal whichever way the device is held.

Although there is specific mention of an operating system for the Valar series, what's running the Zeus and Ulmo has not yet to be confirmed, but the product images provided by MiTAC suggest Android too.
The new tablets will be on show at the MiTAC booth between March 1 and 5 at CeBIT 2011 in Hanover, Germany.

CeBIT 2011: TazTag to Unveil the 1st NFC ANDROID Tablet -Hall 9 Stand B09

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

TazTag, the French expert in contactless technologies, confirms its intention to supply the market with a complete range of NFC products and will introduce its latest product, the TazPad, an NFC ANDROID tablet, at CeBIT 2011.

The only product of its kind on the market
TazTag will unveil its new product, the TazPad, the first NFC ANDROID tablet on the market at the CeBIT. The TazPad is equipped with a 7-inch color screen that has multitouch capacity as well as a full HD and HDMI output that connects via WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and ZigBee (as do all TazTag products). Other available TazPad functions include a camera, a GPS device, and an accelerometer.

As part of its secure hardware and software architecture, this product, which is unique on the market, also features a biometric authentication option. The tablet works with Android, thus appealing to the largest mobile applications developer community.

A product highly anticipated by professionals
This tablet is perfect for professionals. It links the back end system with the vendor and their customers. For example, after biometric authentication on the TazPad, a vendor may provide specific information on products, read his client's loyalty card (card or NFC phone), book orders on site and even register a secure payment.

The TazPad, without the biometric option, can also be used at aisle end displays or store window to inform a customer about a product presented to the tablet, to compare products, or to retrieve a promotional coupon using their NFC phone.

Integrators and service providers can develop and customize new contactless applications according to their clients' needs and expectations thanks to the TazPad.

The technology has been available for some time though mobile devices were missing to use the technology to its full potential. TazTag intends to provide the ideal object to service providers and users, an NFC Android Tablet, available by Q2 2011.

Demonstration of the Tablet
TazTag will demonstrate its range of products, including the Android NFC Tablet, from March 1-5 at CeBIT 2011, at the UBIFrance Pavilion, Hall 9 Stand B09.

About TazTag
Recognized for its expertise in contactless technology, the French company TazTag offers a complete range of products enabling the deployment of new applications thanks to NFC such as the TazBox, a standalone NFC HotSpot, the TazModule, allowing to easily add contactless communication to existing equipment, or the TazCard, a mobile device dedicated for closed-loop systems.

Magic W3 a mini-PC with phone capabilities but not a smartphone

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

The Magic W3 microcomputer runs a Magic Telephony Touch User Interface to cater for user voice and texting needs over a suitable quad-band GSM network.

The Magic W3's primary function is as a handheld computer that also happens to have telephone functionality. What's the difference? The Atom-powered W3 runs on a full version of Windows 7 Home Premium for multi-tasking productivity and includes 32GB of onboard solid state storage.

In addition to the Windows 7 OS, the Magic W3 microcomputer runs a Magic Telephony Touch User Interface to cater for user voice and texting needs over a suitable quad-band GSM network. An Intel Atom Z530 processor running at 1.6 GHz provides the computing power, with support from 1GB DDR2 RAM. The 4.8-inch touchscreen display is capable of 720p high definition playback and there's a 1.3 megapixel webcam for video conferencing or web chat.

The device also benefits from 3G, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g wireless connectivity, and in addition to the obligatory SIM card slot also sports mini-HDMI, mini-USB and microSD. Completing the specs checklist is built-in GPS, accelerometer, dual microphones, stereo speakers and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Having a full version of Windows running on a handheld device may have been enough of an attraction just a few short years ago to make theMagicW3 a huge success, but it's questionable that it will be able to compete with the many more advanced mobile offerings either already or soon to be available. That said though, there's nothing wrong with having another choice for mobile computing.

There's no word on pricing or availability, yet.
