NEC’s Multimedia Session Transfer Technology for Femtocells allows
consumers to stream content from their mobiles to their Home TVs, PCs or Tablets

NEC is demonstrating live its Multimedia Session Transfer technology for Femtocell at Mobile World Congress 2011. The Multimedia Transfer Technology is integrated into a Digital Home Network environment, allowing mobile users to transfer IMS multimedia sessions from their mobile terminals to devices in their Digital Home network environment (e.g. TV, PC, Tablet or a fixed phone)

The Multimedia Session Transfer technology allows mobile subscribers to leverage high-resolution multimedia equipment in their homes. For example, a user watching a mobile video when returning home can transfer the audio and video sessions to its large TV display and audio system. The multimedia sessions can be started and controlled throughout from the mobile phone. Alternatively the session control can be transferred to the target device.

A key innovation is that the IMS Femtocell (or the Home Gateway where the Femtocell is integrated) enables the multimedia session transfer towards off-the-shelf DLNA-certified digital home equipment. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a standards-based technology supported by most recent consumer electronic devices facilitating consumers to use, share and enjoy their digital photos, music and videos. The technology builds on the 3GPP Rel-10 standard for Inter-UE Transfer (IUT) [3GPP TS 23.237].

Dr. Heinrich Stüttgen, Vice President of the NEC Laboratories Europe said, “NEC’s Multimedia Session Transfer technology for IMS Femtocells benefits both end users and operators. It brings with it the possibility for mobile subscribers to seamlessly enjoy multimedia services over high-end digital home equipment. It improves end-user experience, thus benefits mobile operators with potential to reduce churns, attract new customers and even boost ARPU through the delivery of multimedia services to users’ home.”
