UK Science:University of Bath Scientists invented a measure glucose patch.

The device can measure glucose levels without piercing the skin

Scientists have created a non-invasive, adhesive patch, which promises the measurement of glucose levels through the skin without a finger-prick blood test.

The patch does not pierce the skin, instead it draws glucose out from fluid between cells across hair follicles, which are individually accessed via an array of miniature sensors using a small electric current. The glucose collects in tiny reservoirs and is measured.

Readings can be taken every 10 to 15 minutes over several hours.

Because of the design of the array of sensors and reservoirs, the patch does not require calibration with a blood sample.

The research team from the University of Bath hopes that it can eventually become a low-cost, wearable sensor that sends regular, clinically relevant glucose measurements to the wearer’s phone or smartwatch wirelessly, alerting them when they may need to take action.

An important advantage of this device over others is that each miniature sensor of the array can operate on a small area over an individual hair follicle – this significantly reduces inter- and intra-skin variability in glucose extraction and increases the accuracy of the measurements taken such that calibration via a blood sample is not required.

The project is a multidisciplinary collaboration between scientists from the Departments of Physics, Pharmacy & Pharmacology, and Chemistry at the University of Bath

Next Step.
In this study the team tested the patch on both pig skin, where they showed it could accurately track glucose levels across the range seen in diabetic human patients, and on healthy human volunteers, where again the patch was able to track blood sugar variations throughout the day.

The next steps include further refinement of the design of the patch to optimise the number of sensors in the array, to demonstrate full functionality over a 24-hour wear period, and to undertake a number of key clinical trials.

UK: John Lewis major store launching own branded WebOS Smart HD TV in May.

Francisco De Jesùs.

UK: John Lewis major store launching own branded WebOS Smart TV in May.

One major British retailer will be selling an own-branded version from "next month." As described by the folks at Pocket-Lint, department store John Lewis, will be selling three different sized webOS TVs – 49-, 55-, and 60-inches – and is already advertising them in its Spring 2014 catalog.
The JL9000 won't be cheap, with prices starting from £1499 for the smallest version. You'll also get a built in soundbar for your money, and honestly, what looks to be a pretty fine looking TV, too. But it's all about the webOS, and while John Lewis maybe isn't the first place you'd go for a TV, it's another step towards getting these things into the mainstream.
John Lewis will be collaborating with LG on its own-brand smart TV using LG's webOS platform.

The details are included in the John Lewis Spring 2014 Technology catalogue, revealing that there will be three sets with 49, 55 and 60-inch screen sizes available for the JL9000 Smart HD TV. (picture above)

The design incorporates a 2.1 soundbar into the stand, so as well as delivering the visuals, it should sound pretty good too.

But most of the interest will be around the new webOS interface. Launched by LG at CES 2014, it sees the return of the platform that gained followers across Palm/HP Pre mobile devices for a short time a few years back.

It promises to offer a more integrated user experience across your TV, pulling both live and on-demand content into the EPG, delivering all those connected services you expect from a smart TV.

John Lewis says you'll have BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Demand 5, Now TV, YouTube, Skype, Twitter and Facebook.

You'll also be able to control HDMI devices through the TV interface, although exactly how it will sit with your Sky EPG, for example, remains to be seen. The John Lewis TVs will come with a Magic Remote, which we'd imagine is very much the same as that from LG, allowing you to point and click through the tab-tabed UI, rather than being faced with endless menu scrolling.

Our first impressions of webOS from the launch announcement in January were good, so it's nice to see it spreading into the high street through John Lewis.

The John Lewis JL9000 Smart HD TV will cost you £1499 for the 49-inch version, £1899 for the 55-inch version, or £2299 for the 60-inch version.

There's no precise date, John Lewis is simply saying "next month". We've asked John Lewis for more information and will update if we hear anything more.

Samsung Galaxy S5 to launch in Malaysia March 27th, for pre-order UK March 28th.

Samsung Galaxy S5 going to pre-order in  Malaysia March 27th, UK March 28th.

Despite the Malaysia site says BE THE FIRST March 27 we are not sure if it is an availablity date, or  a pre-order date, because Samsung Officialy said April 11th as availabale in 150 countries, unless Samsung is launching earlier in some countries

What can be certain is that the big 3 telcos in Malaysia – CelcomDiGi and Maxis will be offering the Galaxy S5 on contract. Looks like what Maxis had teased isn’t that far from the truth.

By the other way Samsung confirmed the Galaxy S5 availability for March 28th in the UK with EE, Tree and Vodafone carriers and through Carphone Warehouse , Phones4U and the Stratford Westfield Experience Store in London, retailers.

UK: 13 years old builds a nuclear reactor. Video.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

He's built a nuclear reactor. He's also a just become a teenager. Take a look at the moment when a 13-year-old Jamie Edwards from the UK became the youngest person ever to successfully carry out atomic fusion.

A 13-year-old Lancashire schoolboy has become one of the youngest people in the world to carry out nuclear fusion.

Jamie Edwards, a pupil at Penwortham Priory Academy, created the project from scratch with help from his school.
"I can't quite believe it - even though all my friends think I am mad," he said.
The last record holder was US student Taylor Wilson, who was 14 when he created nuclear fusion in 2008.
Jamie, who started work in October in an under-used school science laboratory, recreated a process known as 'inertial electrostatic confinement' which dates back to the 1960s.
'Star in jar'
"One day, I was looking on the internet for radiation or other aspects of nuclear energy and I came across Taylor Wilson," said the junior scientist who faced a race against time to complete the project before his 14th birthday on Sunday.
"I looked at it, thought 'that looks cool' and decided to have a go."
"You see this purple ball of plasma - basically it's like a star in a jar," he added.
Jamie, along with friend George Barker, set about trying to create nuclear fusion by consulting an open source website for amateur physicists.
His application for funds was rejected by various nuclear laboratories and universities.
School funding
"They didn't seem to take me seriously as it was hard to believe a 13-year-old would do something like that so I went to my head teacher Mr Hourigan in October," he said.
"I was a bit stunned and I have to say a little nervous when Jamie suggested this but he reassured me he wouldn't blow the school up," said Priory head Jim Hourigan, who agreed to give £2,000 to the project.
Jamie ordered parts and equipment from Lithuania, the US and UK, working on the project every break and lunchtime as well as after school.
His nuclear fusion record attempt is yet to be verified by the Open Source Fusor Research Consortium
Note:

A kind of nuclear fusion

This type of fusion has been known about since the 1960s.
A high voltage is put through a confined gas creating tiny pockets hotter than the surface of the Sun.
Some charged hydrogen atoms can fuse together to produce a helium nucleus and a few neutron particles.
Care needs to be taken because of the high voltage production of a small amount of radiation, including some X-rays.
The process is called inertial electrostatic confinement.
