LG G Watch R vs Samsung Gear S. LG is winning in South Korea.

LG Electronics' design-focused circular smartwatch ― the G Watch R ― is receiving positive reviews from industry and influential consumer review sites since its debut.

On Friday,  Cetizen, an influential website in the South Korea technology community, said the latest LG smartwatch received higher ratings than Samsung's Gear S-branded wristwatch in its latest survey.

Cetizen conducted an online survey of some 700 adults for eight days from Aug. 28, about whether they prefer the R or Gear S.

Among 718 respondents who participated in the survey, 557, or 78 percent chose the G Watch R, while only 161, or 22 percent voted for Samsung's Gear S.

Respondents favoring LG said they were impressed by the circular design of the R. Those supporting Samsung, on the other hand, noted the company's proven track record for on-time delivery and output commitment for their wearable products.

But Samsung and LG had different views over the functionalities of their latest achievements as LG put more emphasis on their product's surface design, while the Samsung Gear S highlighted improvements of health-related solutions inside the wristwatch.

Samsung partnered with Nike to make the Nike Plus Running app, a popular activity tracker program, available for the Gear S, which uses the Tizen OS, a result of collaboration between the company and U.S.-based chip giant Intel.

Meanwhile, the G Watch R adopted Google's Android Wear operating system.

Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of the mobile business division at Samsung, said the Gear S is "not a watch, but a smart device" at IFA, while LG claimed its G watch R feels like a real, everyday watch with which it hopes to attract customers who wear regular wristwatches.

"The G Watch R claims to be a regular watch with cutting-edge smart technology. Consumers can easily notice that its identity is basically a wrist watch, if they see the Always-on feature of the device," said an official of LG Electronics.

LG starts mass production of circular plastic OLED panels.

LG Display announced on Sept. 4 that it started the mass production of circular plastic OLED display panels.

The panel has a 320×320 resolution and uses a plastic substrate with a diameter of 33.12 mm to form a perfectly circular shape. Its thickness is less than 0.6 mm.

The circular shape allows the area of the screen to be at least 57 percent wider than a square panel of the same size. Also, it comes with a color reproduction range of 100 percent, a maximum brightness of 300 nits, and an infinite contrast level, which means the panel is optimized for use in wearable devices.

LG Display also mounts a program switch module (PSM) onto the display, which allows the screen to display at the same resolution even without a power supply, and also saves power. 

The company developed a circular mask for organic material deposition and improved on the efficiency for mass production. Highly precise laser cutting and processing techniques have been incorporated into the manufacturing process too.

LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it has started mass production of the world’s first circular Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display. The cutting-edge display will be used for the LG G Watch R to be showcased at IFA 2014 in Berlin, opening a new era of wearable devices by bringing innovative and stylish designs to such devices.

With a 1.3-inch diameter, the new innovative display is perfectly round and allows the LG G Watch R to have a full watch face, while promoting ease of use since the screen area is 57 percent larger than that of a square display of the same size. The world’s first P-OLED panel has an ultra slim thinness of less than 0.6mm, optimized for wearable devices. With 320X320 resolution, LG Display’s breakthrough display realizes 100 percent color gamut, 300nit peak luminance, and unlimited contrast ratio to enhance user satisfaction.

LG Display aims to realize the original intentions of wearable devices by enabling the screen to be turned on at all times while using the least amount of power with the Power Save Mode (PSM), which enables the screen to retain the same resolution–even without a power supply–from the power integrated circuit.

LG Display was able to achieve the world’s first mass production of circular P-OLED displays by
developing a circular mask that enables organic materials to be deposited simultaneously and a new production process that improves deposition efficiency while employing a highly precise laser cutting and processing technology.

“This first circular P-OLED display is yet another breakthrough that proves LG Display is ahead in OLED and the next-generation display technologies,” said Sang-Deog Yeo, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display. IFA 2014: LG to unveil the G Watch R brand new rounded smartwatch. Video teaser.

LG today uploaded a video teaser on Youtube pre-announcing a new smartwatch this time with a rounded shape. It might be called the G Watch R and LG will unveiled it at IFA 2014 in Berlin  in Sept 5 as it is teased on the video. See the pics below we captured from the video.

LG clearly take on the MOTO 360 the first round smartwatch project presented in March 2014, that Motorola is going to unveil in a special event in September 4th.
