LG WebOS TV apps in the works: MusicXmatch and Plex.

According to the Register UK, one of the first developers to work with the LG Connect SDK is MusicXmatch. “This is a music player that plays all the music on your smartphone with lyrics, pictures and metadata,” explains LeVak. “By dropping our Connect SDK into it, it launches a cloud based web TV app that takes the song being played on your smartphone and presents it on the webOS TV or any of the other compatible devices.”

Another developer which has taken the webOS SDK solution is media server favourite Plex, which has added the Connect SDK to its Chromecast app.

The MusicXmatch app developer is among the early adopters of LG webOS.

LG will continue to upgrade the WebOS Smart TV platform. First version called "AFRO"

Francisco De Jesùs.
After the LG WebOS Smart TVs launch success with 1.1 million plus TVs sold worldwide, LG is projecting an upgrade version of WebOS for 2015.

LG plans to give the platform a different name to each new version, Mr. Lee said. The current version is called AFRO, named after a hairstyle that was popular in the 1970s.

"We will also continue to research how the platform can be applied in relation to other consumer electronic devices used in the home," said Senior Vice President Lee In-kyu, who runs the consumer-electronics maker's TV business.

LG sells roughly 30 million TVs a year, including low-end, traditional models.
To release an upgraded version of WebOS next year, it will be crucial for LG to manage the current team of WebOS designers and engineers in the U.S. and possibly hire more staff from Silicon Valley, Mr. Lee said.
LG plans to unveil a version of its WebOS operating system next year that will power all the company's Internet-connected TV sets and could run other home devices.

LG rolls out WebOS SDK for LG Smart+ TVs.
Eagerly Awaited Software Development Kit and
Web Site to Expand Support for webOS TV App Development.

The new site for developers of LG WebOS Smart+ TVs where you can find for download the SDK for developing applications has a new look and it is very good organized.

LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its Software Development Kit (SDK) to help developers create new LG Smart+ TV apps with greater ease and efficiency. A new accompanying website (http://developer.lge.com/webOSTV) will provide developers with access to all the information they need to create high quality webOS TV apps.

LG’s SDK simplifies the process for developers to write apps compatible with the company’s Smart+ TVs. With LG SmartTV Emulator, developers will be able to set up a virtual webOS TV experience on a PC. The SDK has a developer-friendly user interface and works with standard web technologies, including HTML5, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript.

The new website contains tech-related documents, development tips, sample apps, design guide, FAQs and developer forum. The Application Programming Interface (API) guide will help developers get started almost immediately without a long orientation process and clear step-by-step explanations are provided for beginners to webOS.

“One key reason behind selecting webOS as our next smart TV operating system was because of its history and origins as a developer-friendly platform,” said Dr. Scott Ahn, LG’s Chief Technology Officer. “We feel it’s very important for platform owners such as LG to assist developers in creating apps that are highly maximized for our products. In an industry where there is no single dominant standard, expanding the webOS TV ecosystem is a top priority for LG.”

Samsung Smart TVs using hand motions and voice commands Tizen OS powered coming in 2015.

Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung Smart TVs using hand motions and voice commands with Tizen OS powered might be coming to the public sometime in 2015.

The company will unveil its software development kit (SDK) for the Tizen OS-based TVs, in the three-day-long Tizen developer conference that kicks off in San Francisco on Monday. Tizen OS SDK can allow software developers to easily make new applications critical for improving user experience.

Tizen is an open source operating system, similar to Google's Android, and is being promoted by Samsung, Intel, Huawei, KT, SK Telecom, NTT Docomo and Panasonic. Samsung has played a leading role in the development of Tizen, which has been used on some of its latest wearables such as its Gear smart watches.
The company said that the SDK to be shown for the first time will be the Beta version of the hypertext markup language 5 standard, which makes it very easy for independent software developers to make new applications.
The Beta version will be available for download from the company's online developers forum site (www.samsungdforum.com) starting in early July.
Samsung also said that another SDK version of Tizen that is to be released later in the year will be set up so people can more easily make animation applications, and permit owners to operate smart TVs using hand motions and voice commands.
This system is, moreover, expected to offer better connectivity with various mobiles devices and wearables that can expand the scope of applications that can be developed.
Press Release:
Summary:
* The Tizen-based Samsung TV SDK is the world’s first TV SDK based on an open platform offering a seamless user interface and debugging functions for easier app development.
Samsung Improves Development Environment and Announces Tizen-based Samsung TV SDK .
Samsung Electronics announced plans to release Tizen-based Samsung TV SDK, marking the industry’s first Software Development Kit (SDK) that allows developers to build applications for the Tizen-based TV.
Samsung’s Tizen-based TV SDK Beta will be available early July following the Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco from June 2–4th. The Tizen-based Samsung TV SDK Beta supports the HTML5 standard through its framework called Caph and enables developers to write apps that run on a Tizen OS –based TVs.
“We are excited to offer app developers the opportunity to experience this new platform in advance with the release of Beta SDK,” said YoungKi Byun, Vice President of Visual Display Business S/W R&D Team, Samsung Electronics. “With the ultimate goal of expanding the TV ecosystem for apps, we will continue our efforts to provide innovative functions and improve the development environment.”
Samsung’s new SDK marks the industry’s first attempt at significantly improving the development ecosystem by offering new technologies such as an interface for virtual TV apps development. Developers can now virtually see all necessary TV functions without a physical TV. Developers can also remotely modify code on their PCs with the new debugging feature, whereas in the past they had to connect directly to the TV’s software to correct application errors.
With increasingly sophisticated animation effects and designs, the Tizen-based Samsung TV SDK Beta also features various scenarios including Smart Interaction, allowing users to control their TVs with simple hand gestures and voice commands; and multi-screen, which can be used to link a TV with various devices including mobile and wearable gadgets.
The launch of Tizen-based Samsung TV SDK represents another step in Samsung’s larger efforts to encourage innovation in the developer community and enable full flexibility in UX design. Samsung will continue to actively work with Tizen to enable developers and operators to extend their reach to other connected devices.
Samsung’s Tizen-based TV SDK can be downloaded at the Samsung Developers Forum website, www.samsungdforum.com, starting in early July, 2014.

Developers Download the Qualcomm Smartwatch Toq SDK.

Qualcomm launched today the Developers SDK for its Smartwatch Toq that will allow developers to enable interaction and communication between Android apps and the Qualcomm Toq smartwatch.

The Toq SDK offers:
  • Request permission to become Toq-enabled (Permission required)
  • Send notifications to the Toq watch
  • Install, update, or uninstall applets on the Toq watch
When an Android app is on the same device as the Qualcomm Toq Android app, it can use the Toq app to interact with the Toq smartwatch. This allows developers to give consumers the ability to customize their Toq experience by adding their app as an on-watch display option. The Toq app processes incoming third-party API calls and communicates directly with the smartwatch.

The Qualcomm Toq smartwatch is different from other smartwatches because of the revolutionary Qualcomm Mirasol™ display which offers superior readability, even in bright sunlight. It utilizes reflected light to create its images instead of the backlight typical of display technologies today. The reflective nature of the display makes it extremely low power, enabling an ‘always on’ use case.
